Just a fellow gear head chiming in about the Ever Allusive MEL Series Finned Aluminum Reproduction Valve Covers. Now that's a mouth full. I just received the following email from Brian Estrada:

eric the gears are here and look flippin sweet.. as for the valve covers i
was under the impression that these were to be finned top heavy alum valve
covers like cal customs style.. im guessing that this is not the case and no
core has ever been in existance..?? SO THIS IS WHAT I PRO POSE.. lets figure
out how many sets we need and ill make the core and have them cast.( i used
to do custom fiberglass and composite fab and prototype in huntington beach
for 7 years) the cores will not be a problem to make just time consuming. Or
ive been thinking of finding a valve cover that is approx the same size and
having some billit adapter plates made(cause im fukin sik of making parts
from scratch for these god foresaken motors...ahhhhhhhhhhhhh

PS ill tri to put the distributor together this weekend and ill let you no
    when its done....

    Hello Brian E,

The allusive aluminum MEL series valve covers that Uncle Scooby is/was offering to the MEL Enthusiasts is actually a finned wooden mockup valve cover that is about the sweetest looking finned valve cover I've ever seen. I recall seeing it on The (MEL) 383, 410, 430, 462 Engine Forum ; though it was some time back.

I under the impression that you might have good results in acquiring the pictures if you were to put a post on a number of the Internet sights. I understand the point, or might I say Uncle Scooby's reasoning behind his desire to make a valve cover such as the awesome 368 Mark Series Engine, but in no way does his desire to make such a piece denote the workmanship of the other valve cover. I would suspect that you might have to see the wood pattern for yourself.

They say a little competition never hurts anyone. We have two parties who are thinking about possibly producing such an animal for sale to the public. I am still of the mind set that there are a large number of individuals whom would be interested in acquiring such an item. I suspect I am going to sit back and watch the "Dog and Pony Show. Good luck gentleman!

Uncle Scooby might just be offering Valley Covers and Timing Covers as well to go with the Ever Allusive Finned Aluminum Valve Covers Mercury, Edsel, Lincoln Series Valve Covers, or (EEFAVCMELSVC), better known as the ever EEFAVCMELSVC Accessory Package.

I need a set of valve covers too, and header flanges. I've got a 6x2 Edelbrock and an OEM (I think) 3x2 for Holley's, either of which is a lot of CFM for any engine on the street. I remember the earlier attempt at covers that faded a year or two ago and hope this effort makes it.

Wow......Mr. Kultulz, you are the man with the goods! I was wondering about the top valve cover in the photo. Is it in some type of packaging and what item is below the valve cover(s)? Who manufactured the valve covers? Are they OEM or aftermarket reproductions?

    Thanks again, eric <><

Also might be worth asking, do you have a set of the posted covers in your position?

    Hello Mr. Grenade Inspector,

I am also hoping that something comes to fruition on the allusive valve cover matter as well. I vaguely recall that a company named Stan's Headers actually makes MEL series flanges in a variety of sizes. I was wondering what type of application it is that you will be building a set of headers for? I also recall reading something about carburetor sizing and how there is an issue with interpreting cfm ratings between two-barrel vs four-barrel carburetors. I will try to find the information and forward it on to you. Just in case this rings a bell with anyone else out thee, please feel free to chime in, thanks.

Please bear with me on this reply to this post. Please send your responses to the sight so that everyone interested in procuring a set of the Allusive MEL V/C can know where they stand in regards to the possibility of acquiring a set for themselves. Now for the really important note: Please contact BRIAN ESTRADA about possible casting candidates. There will be a finial vote of the winner of the best looking valve cover contest.

Brian's email address is as follows: bestrada11@hotmail.com

The following is an exchange of emails between myself and a gentleman with a set of Cal Custom valve covers. It also includes an exchange between myself and Brian Estrada. Sorry about the length. It does tend to drag on a bit.

    Hello John,

Thank you for you quick reply regarding the Allusive MEL V/C. This email is actually a conglomeration of several email exchanges with a individual whom I have been purchasing various MEL performance parts from, Brian Estrada. He is also the guy who would be in need of your set of Cal Custom Finned Aluminum Valve Covers off of your 430 MEL engine. If seeing aftermarket reproduction valve covers made available to the general public holds interest to you, than Brian would be the man with the plan.

His email address is as follows: bestrada11@hotmail.com

    Hello Brian E,

Wow..has this topic generated some interest or what? That topic being availability of finned aluminum valve covers for the MEL series engine. Just thought you might be interested in the following email I received from a gentleman named John.

John's email sent to myself, eric

I actually have the header flanges in stock with matching cnc cut gaskets. The valve covers are still in the works. I think there really need to be two sets made. One set of the Cal Custom style finned no name valve covers and one in the original 1956-57 Mark finned and logo covers that we can't sell due to trade mark issues. That is the pair that I plan to run on mine. I'm going to make them even if they are the only set ever made and I don't sell them at all. But it would be nice to have something to sell too.

That is the actual mold the OEM covers were cast off of. It went off on E-BAY maybe a year ago.

Bill Stroppe did this work for MERC (as he did the earlier M-335 368 CI) and contracted through MOON (I am fairly sure) for both the intake, air cleaner(s) and covers. MOON also offered the CAL CUSTOM style cover you are asking about.

This cover was unique to the MERC only and did not come with all installations, that's why they are so scarce.

To the best of my knowledge, there was no 2 X 4, either OEM or aftermarket.

If you study the design of the actual MERC/LINC air cleaner assemblies, they were very well thought out in that the actual element was enclosed and outside air was fed into the housing via a snorkel that could also deliver heated air for cold temp operation.

The MERC was decorated with SUPER MARAUDER/400 HP while the LINC was either plain or just had painted ribs. If you copied this design (LINC), it would fit all applications and the bottom plate could be cast for whatever fuel delivery system you chose.

You would have to pay FORD a royalty for each set sold (and they would control quality). You can inquire of them, it will not hurt.

That's basically where we are at. One of my friends and fellow HAMBer works at a foundry here in Indiana and makes all kinds of cool stuff. It's just been a time issue. We talked about it again today and are gonna see if we can get it done.

Why wouldn't it be possible to make a mold from a oem MEL cover and a finned cover? Just cut the top off a finned cover and attach the fins to the MEL covers and smooth it out at the seams. It may take some fabrication to get it right but it would be possible. Or does the cover have to be made larger for the shrinking of the metal during the cooling process?

  21. This isn't mine however... I "had" one of these in a 57 Ford Ranchero and I couldn't keep any tires on it...!

I stand corrected this sold for over $6,700 on the bay last year!

I've got three angles working on this. I'd still really like to make two different sets. One as a regular finned version and one as the Mark covers or something else. I'll know more by the end of the week. I appreciate the offer. By no means should my efforts discourage anyone else from doing something too. The more the merrier. Obviously, I don't want to reinvent the wheel but I would like to see it get done. If someone else beats me to it, I'll gladly buy their version. I think I'll have a definitive answer on whether or not it's going to happen for me in the next week or two max though. My car is coming along though so the need is finally there for me.

Im gonna have some adapters made to fit some BBC covers on these heads they are the approx size for these heads and are only off by a fraction on the large side so im thinking that this will be a siriously easy and cheap version on getting something other than stock on... I still love the idea of a specific application cover but this is the path of least resistance and for now thats what im all about concerning this.....making the buck for these dosent sound like much fun.. the cnc sounds mighty nice though.

I haven't done enough research, or have enough money, but I have the stock motor in my 60 Lincoln Continental.. and I plan on keeping it in there..
so I'm glad there is knowledge on MEL's here... When I finally get more money and time I will be asking you guys a lot of questions!

    Thanks in advanced!

For those thinking about alternate rocker assemblies: can anyone give the the lever lengths, ratio and valve stem angle (vs. the bore, not the seat angle)?
