So I am getting ready to start researching drag strips for our HAMB Drags East and HAMB Drags West events. I've already got a couple of places in mind, but thought I would give you fellas a chance to speak up... So, what's your favorite old drag strip in your area?

    A few conditions:

    1. Doesn't have to have tons of history or any, but it helps.

    2. We prefer smaller home town tracks... You know - privately owned and operated family kind of deals.

    3. I really, REALLY prefer 1/4 mile tracks. I don't think we could do one of our deals at an 1/8 mile track.

    4. Gotta have a decent little town attached to it...

#1 in the Socal would be Pomona. #2 would be Fontana. Irwindale is only an 1/8 mile and LACR is closing.

What kind of east are you talking about? Like Massachusetts, Virginia or like Georgia?

Detroit Dragway! (whoops, sorry, I just read the post again - active ones only, ok shoot me!)

I used to go there when I was in high school. It was really on its last leg by then, but they still did night drag racing on Saturday nights - man it was sweet.

    Tons of history.

I read an article in the paper when they were closing it down. Took a ride down to Sibley and Dix. They were literally tearing it down when I got there! The tower that is, and most of the strip itself was already torn up. Well I made off with a few things that day. Got the old PA system amplifiers, a stool from the tower, and oh yeah, this sign that hangs in the garage....

How about having a run-off? East winners vs West winners and they meet at Thunder Valley Dragway in Marion SD? Cool old track in the middle of the US with a Good sized city 20 miles away. Lots of the old pros used to go there. Opened in 1966.

  11. Famoso. The new owners, the Bowser family, are great folks. The place has true history. It's 1/4 mile and the surface is good. Lots of motels and hotels that are used to drag racers and hot rodders and Bakersfield has lots of shops and a bunch of HAMBers live close. Sort of a no brainer for the HAMB Drags West. Please, make it happen, Ryan.

Interstate Dragways in Sabin, Minnesota. Its 5 minutes from Fargo.

1/4 mile track, privately owned, been in buisness a LONG time, just been resurfaced and stuff, new shower/bathroom facilities.

  15. OK, i'm going with Bakersfield (Famoso). It's got TONS of history, it's easily accesible for most (given the attendance for the Hot Rod Reunion and March Meets), it's got reasonable, close lodging, and a very cool setting in the middle of miles of cool old farms. And maybe we can get Squeek and Dwayne of the nearby hot rod shop, Kiwi Konnection to toss one of their killer partys that they have Saturday night of the above mentioned events.

  20. How about Beech Bend Dragway, Bowling Green, KY. They use to host the NHRA Vintage Drags, but moved them to Ohio this year. Cool old track. Very vintage feel!!

    Bremerton Washington.
Ran on a old airport runway.
When I went there last (8years ago?) they could not have any permanent structures.Rolled in the timing tower, set up jersey barriers.
A trip in the "wayback machine" for sure.
I always felt like I was in the 1950's there.

Port Orchard is near,on the water.

Hey PNW guys is it still running?

    Cool!
We could hook that up with the drive-in weekend and make it a ttwo or three day event.

I always liked Dragway 42 near Medina, Ohio.
    Went there in the 60's.
All the big names raced there. 1/4 mile.
Going there this weekend. Will check out the condition.

Yea Bremerton is still runnin. But My vote would be SHELTON. Its closer to the ocean and Oregon. There We would get Guys from Cali - Oregon- Idaho - and Canada. LOTS of parking its also an airstrip. Im for SHELTON

If the East and West coast get a date, the midwest also needs one before the Nationals at Mokan.
Take a serious look at Cordova, Ill. second oldest continually operating track in the nation. Nice track but very downhome feel to it. And its out in the sticks. They rent out for gigs like this alot, and love the nostalgia stuff.
I know the guys who help run it and can do the legwork on this end for ya if needed.

  27. Famoso (Bako) is located where it attracts from both Northern and Southern Calif and nearby states. What do we gotta do to make it happen? Uh oh, am I willing to help? Probably would....

You guys also have to remember the budget. I bet the "big name" tracks would eat the budget alive.
