My user name says it all! I have a totally stripped of running gear 62 falcon I picked up for $300. I want to put in a 383 Chevy with iron heads, and a tunnel ram, mated to a muncie 4 speed and a ford 9 inch. I have looked at other similiar falcons, they all seem to have the straight axle I want and the rear wheel wells and quarter panels cut. Any suggestions from anyone on doing this project. I want to do this cheaply, i.e. building the motor myself and fabing my own front straight axle. Thanks for the help and I am looking forward to sharing my build with the forum!
It`s great to have another Falcon gasser here. I`m using a Speedway axle in mine and a `69 Mustang 9" .It bolted right in the stock location. Welcome from Tulsa. Gasserman
hi there 62.... good way to post pics would be to get an account on photobucket.com use the html addresss and when you come on here to post pics, just click on the little icon box that has the little mountain and sun thing next to the insert link icon with the earth on it.... hope that helped.. cant wait to see some pics!
So find a Mustang axle you say??? What years will work? Any problems with durability? What do you run for a posi? Spool, locker, limited? I need advice on where to start with this car. It currently has no rear axle, needs foot wells and floor pans, and I want to paint it white. Would you do the floors first, or the rear axle or the front straight axle for that matter? I want to get my duck in a row so I don't make any costly mistakes. What do you suggest for cutting the opening for the tires on the rear quarter panels?
I just used a `69 Mustang 9" housing which fit right on the stock rear leaf spring mounts. I`m building a front frame for the car. The front unibody is not in the best of shape , so I`m using 2"x3" .120 wall tubing to build it . Going to go all the way to the rear unibody and tie it in. On the rear I just used the housing and used all Strange engineering axles, gears, case and spool in it.It pretty much a strip only car ,but I plan some street time too. Gasserman
you came to the right place to find gassers and even falcon gassers... I'd like to see some pics too.. Pike
The Mustang 9" you want was used from '67 to '70, mostly in big block cars, although a few others had it such as a Boss 302. Also, '57 and '58 Fords (and maybe the '59?) used a 9" that is actually one inch narrower than the Mustang housing. One very inexpensive option for a front straight axle would be one from the earliest Ford Econoline vans. They use twin leaf springs and look very "gasser-ish." (Is that a word? It is now!) You'll want to do something to beef up the anemic unibody under that old Falcon though. That Falcon will look balls-out if you do all of this. I'd love to see the final result.
The 9" I got out of a `69 Mustang was a 302 car. Also the Econoline axle is a lot too wide. I run a `63 Falcon with a straight axle in the early 70`s on stock unibody with out any problems. But each to his own ideas. Gasserman
What kind of power were you making? Are you going to tell me that you didn't have at least a six-point, subframe connectors etc? To each their own indeed. The Falcons, early Fairlanes, Mustangs and such were about as*****py a unibody as was ever made. Putting any kind of power to one without addressing chassis rigidity is paramount to a deathwish. Extensive work was done to the Thunderbolts and they were still a major handful to drive under the best of conditions. No one in their right mind today would race one seriously w/o some serious modernization.
Sounds like its going to be a great set up. For my rear wheel well openings I used 1980 Chevy Impala/Caprice front fender lips and welded them in. I fund a Econoline front axle and used it drum to drum. Love to see some pictures of your car. Jon
Welcome to the board. Nothin wrong with the Econoline but, Speedway has the whole front axle kit with spindles and disc brakes for $499!!!!!!! NICE NEW PARTS If you can find a small bronco or a 65 and up Econo, that is a perfect 9 inch for the Falcon. I think it is a couple inches shorter than the Mustang. Good luck on your project. I am looking to do an early Ranchero as soon as the Cougar is done. Now about this Chevy engine in the Ford,,,,,,,,,, that just may be a felony in Texas. Dave
I used a small Bronco rear end in the Falcon and its narrower than the Mustang and the one I found evan had a factory nodular center section. Its been in there for 8 years and no problem yet. I run a 4.56 gear and a full aluminum spool. I would have agree with Chromedaddyo about the Chevy in a Ford thing, but run what you have and just have fun. Jon
