My buddys nose deep in the catologues and wants me to ask for opinions.Does anyone have any complaints?
Nothing but complaints on those SW guages .. Check here http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=79278&highlight
I had a set in the 32 3 window i built a few years back. They were the electric one's, full set. The biggest problem i had was the tach never read right....at all. Many time's, it would jump around and not stay steady. Tony
Yo White, I had them in my 29, there were the electric ones. I NEVER had a problem with them in 5 years...When I first got the car the tach didnt work, I bought a new tach, and it too worked fine for 5 years.
I've been running an S-W, Mooneyes mechanical fuel pressure gauge for about ten years in the 32. No problems. I believe they were made in China that far back and still are far as I know. I note as well that some of the Chinese stuff is not as well built as it used to be and is getting even cheaper in terms of quality. I sold my 20 ton Harbor Freight press before I moved to Sunny Arizona. Bought a new one a short time back. It's smaller and it looks like the metal gage is one step down. It's a damn shame the ***hole CEO's are raiding these old line companies, ****ing the ***ets out of them and running off with their Golden Parachutes . . . and then do the same at the next company. I find it interesting that grocery stores are now advertising sections that are China-Free. Not a bad idea in view of the anti-freeze chemicals laden toothpaste that has come into the US and other countries.
I used the S-W Wings Voltmeter and oil pressure guages on the Zipper as they complement the stock '32 speedo. However, the tach is ****!
In the last 5 years I have purchased two sets of the SW winged gauges and installed them. Had problems with both sets. Never did get a tach that worked properly. odometer in sped failed in one. Two fuel gauges failed. one temp gauge failed. They look real good.ut don't work or last for ****.
Now we all know why I've been buying my set on ebay....... good used American made SW gauges for me! Still need that 270 degree temp gauge tho...............
My Tach has never worked , bounces all over the place, Ive tried grounding it better, grounding the engine better, nothing makes it work.
I got a complete set of the black ones with blue ring around the bezel, I was told on here they were early 70s, are those China junk?
They are made in Mexico now. Quality is pretty poor. I have not received a tach that works either. same problems as the other guys. It would be great if they worked as good as they look. FONZI
I bought a complete set (w/speedometer and tach) for a '32 roadster I was building to sell but instead sold the project before completing it. They are still sitting here waiting to be used. Ever since getting them I've heard about what **** they are and I've considered selling them to keep from going through the h***le. I'm sure there will be no warrantee after this much time. Sure makes me grateful for the ones that are in my '32 5w (curved gl*** origionals) that were bought new in 1958. I've tried each one of them and they work perfectly. Frank
They damn well better work, bought a 6-gauge set from Speedway that get's installed this weekend. Mech water/oil/speedo, elect. fuel/tach/volt.
Well its good to know Im not the only one with a bad tach, I thought I was going crazy. I just ordered an autometer 1690 tach. Looks darn close to the wings and I'll replace each one as I have to with autometer.
I got a new set with chrome plating problems. Complained to Vintage Ford in Sacto and they sent another set... Same problem. They said all had finish problems. Looked like they all had deep scratches in them before plating. Also pitting from the factory. I tried asking the factory if it was just a batch problem but they never picked up the phone. Hyfire
Same story for me as above.......I put a full set of 6 SW Wings gauges in my Deuce when I first built it 6-7 years ago......everything worked just fine right out of the box.......with one big exception....the tach was jittery and all over the place no matter what I sit the dip**** switches to......I got all kinds of bad advice about it.....like set the DIPs to a 4 cyl and it'll read right......yeah, right....nada......and then I was advised that I needed some kind of filter that I had to get from Cl***ic Instruments.....nada....... By now I am tearing my hair out.......SW was no help.....all I got from them is *it's now out of warranty!*.....so I had to buy another matching Tach, and it worked perfectly out of the box and all gauges have been working perfectly for the last 5 years........they are all Electric gauges...... Brucie
More of the same for me. I used to love SW. That's all I used for years. Bought a set of winged a year or so ago, and had nothing but issues. Mechanical oil and temp worked fine. voltage gauge lost an INTERNAL ground and pegs as soon a the key is on. Spedo and fuel worked great. Tach bounced around like an epileptic jumping bean. It's a damn shame. they used to be great stuff. Craig
The Autometer Old Tyme Black look pretty nice. Black face with a chrome bezel. You just have to get used to seeing the Autometer logo on the bottom part of the gauge. http://www.autometer.com/cat_gaugeop.aspx?sid=20 Not sure about the quality though......But thats the gauge I'll eventually be using.
Anyone watch Hard Shine tonight? Jimmy Shine was freakin because the 32 was supposed to ship the next day and it was overheating? He found out it wasn't overheating, it was a gauge sender problem. Oh, and did anyone notice what gauges were in it? Yup, SW Wings.....
We have used Wings gauges for years with no problem. Then it seemed like they were coming from another planet, nothing but problems. We are using a set of Cl***ic gauges Vintage series on the new roadster. Hope they work better, they dam sure cost enough!
i tried to e-mail sw tech/help but after 6 attempts with no reply i figured something was up. gotta work on my spanish. i'm bummed, used sw for years and i wish i had the guages back i sold in cars. did spot pretty cool stuff from haneline, they got engine turned panels too. but i'm sure gonna miss sw's look.
OH! Those look pretty nice! I'm impressed! Very simple with good styling. Anyone have any pictures of these in their dash? How is Autometer's pricing?? Sorry to Hijack...
