Total run wound up being about 260 miles and 9 hours. Thanx to all attendees. I hope you enjoyed the day as much as I did. By 8:45 we decided that all were there who intended to show so we left Kingdom City. We had 9 cars and 8 motorcycles in the entourage. We traveled 120 miles on backwoods blacktops and arrived at Washington, Missouri at a couple of minutes past noon, where we ate lunch at a barbecue joint that was expecting us. Everyone had a bbq'd pork sandwich and fries. It was pretty yummy food, b-t-w. After lunch the Kansas City bike contingent broke away to return home, as they were approximately 200 miles from Kansas City. The rest of us toured 60 more miles of hills and valleys, arriving at Hermann at about 3:00. Along the way were joined by another car and one bike. The car hadn't started Saturday morning so they spent half a day figuring out the problem and then caught up with us about 2:00. We were still 80 miles from Mugs Up in Columbia. After Hermann folks dropped out to head home as they got to appropriate intersections. roadrocket was there on his bike along with several more bikers for whom I didn't get a hamb or JJ name. Cars were: Greezy ('40 Ford coupe), 1937chev ('37 Chevy sedan); 1937chev's friend ('55 Chevy wagon), 26-T ("A" sedan), 26-T's son ('26 "T" roadster), Ductail ('32 Ford coupe), Ed/Joan ('36 Ford sedan), John/Nancy ('47 Chevy coupe), and Kenny ('34 Plymouth sedan). 26-T's brother Bill joined us after they got the '47 Ford sedan going, as did Bill's bud on his scoot. I guess you noticed I never mentioned Clarence. It was the first one to drop out of the reliability run. The day before the run began. I started it and was going to move it down by the shop to check the oil, air, etc. Pushed the brake pedal and NO BRAKES!!! Fortunately I was able to run out into the yard and turn up a small hill to get stopped. Then I eased it back to a good parking spot and left it there. Noon Friday is no time to begin to troubleshoot the brakes for a 260 mile run the next day. So Sherry and I rode with Ed and Joan in their air conditioned '36 Ford the entire run. Oh, well; we suffered terribly. Stuff happens. I learned several things about a run like this: 1. 260 miles and 9 hours are just too far and too long on a hot day (unless there's a goal at the end, like Bonneville or the SK500). 2. Keeping to farm-to-market roads and avoiding crowded intersections is a very good thing when you have a line of vehicles behind you. 3. Bikers need to get off and stretch more often than drivers (yeah, I already knew that, but still didn't plan the stops close enough together). 4. More planned stops, of longer duration, would have been better. Maybe we'll do another one next year. Anyone want to go?
Mike, Had a great time Saturday and the scenery was beautiful. You bet I would do it again! Keep us posted on next year's event and I'll put it on the calendar. Andrew (my son) agrees we shouldn't try to drive as far, and stopping more often would be great. Maybe a park or historic site? Here's an idea - how about a fall run through that part of the country - I bet it's beautiful when the trees are turning. Hmmm. . . .
well, we've been tossing that idea around a bit already. what with the early tin dusters putting on their color run in quincy about that time of year do you think that folks would show up the following weekend for a color run through the ozarks hills? actually we used to do a local invitation only color run every year, but maybe we'll revive it and open it up to all the hamb & JJ. b-t-w; good to meet you guys saturday. surely we'll get together again. prolly at the hamb drags or rust revival, if not before. i bumped into BinderRod today; he's pumped about the drags and already talking about next year's rust revival.
well, i for one didn't take a camera. but if i would have it would have been a 35mm film camera and i don't have a way to scan printed pix. guess i'm sort of a dinosaur, huh? maybe someone else had a camera and will step up (hint, hint...)
35mm????is that kinna like a betamax???? well, come on people....i wasnt there so i need pics!!!!dont be shy...step right up, step right up!
