Great example. Haven't glass T-Buckets been around since the late 50's? 50 years of a hobby thats about 70 years old sounds pretty traditional to me.
Hey Josh7652, what type of body is that? i've never seen one with the double tubes behind the seat!! JimV
A well done car is a well done car. Just as a POS is a POS. Personally I went with glass for the weight savings because I built my car to race (I cant be trusted on the streets). Since you are looking to buy a car, just make sure that it is a quality build and drive the hell out of it.
I was a snob when i had my steel 34 3 window. Family health issues forced me to sell it and now I hope to build a glass one from my mold this winter. I have learned not to look down my nose at others.
Obviously most people here would prefer steel, but most of our dream cars are far out of the the realm of reason price-wise. I think it's really about what you do with it more than what material it's made of. Total Performance has a new new cool track-T that is worth looking at.
I, really surprised to here the positive responses here. Probably 99% of us would prefer steel, but some of us aren't lucky enough to find the car of our dreams and glass will have to do.
I used to own Burnys 'glass" T roadster, its a well built car that i had tons of fun in.........mine is steel and by the way its also for sale So now i am looking for a glass coupe thats mostly done
This is my latest Roadster ,with glass body , i had another several years ago................Steel 32's are bloody rare here in the UK
i bought my essex to build a hot rod, but tis just way too complete, i i dont think i can bring myself to do it. so maybe once i catch up on things and have a little cash floating around, ill do one, i like the Ts but not all of them, that white one is pretty sweet. if i do one its not going to have a small block chevy i know that. id also like to do one with paralel leafs front and rear.
I know that car Cruzr. Here's a pic of me sitting in it at the LARS,a couple years ago. The guy parked with us.
I'd rather see a glass car done right than a steel car done wrong. And now they have fiberglass '66 Chevy Novas and chopped '55 Chevys also...
REAL hotrodders are more concerned with ET's, top speed, class speed records and track wins, than with what the damn body is made out of. Worrying about "is it real?" is for parking lot "racers".
Exactly. Aren't cars really about driving something so fast and loud that it scares the panties of your girlfriend?
I bought my 29 roadster body for 150 bucks it came with a 32 grill shell, a top, a hood, and a trunk lid..felt pretty lucky that day..
I just realized the 3 Keith Weesner art works I have hanging in my hallway are actually prints, not real paintings... I guess I shouldn't look at them anymore (or even want to own them) since they aint "the real thing"... even though they look just like the original $3000 paintings do. Sound rediculous? So does this whole steel vs. 'glass debate.
Well, I guess that means my 6 cylinder plain JANE 1970 Nova ( Yenko fake/clone ) with a change over SBC and a set of decals is OK to register in the Yenko register ?? And I can partcipate with my car at the Yenko conventions ... ? Same difference ... Expanation of the above statement ... ( for those you do know not know ...Joey has a nice original Yenko Nova ... )
lol, THAT is a perfect analogy!!! I have some of those fake paintings too. But then I am the proud builder of a kickass chopped '55 chevy...made of glass...
It's all ok my me if you do!!! now for glass cars--- some times you have to reg it a 32 or have to have a ton of smog and crap. So a glass car guy should just not have a 32 if he wants one?? I know i dont mind the fake boobs i see on the street but i guess from now on i will just think of them a man boobs
Deuce, It's funny you mention this, as I admit I thought of this exact analogy myself... You're right, a clone Yenko is NOT allowed to display at the Supercar Reunion (which I'm leaving to go to tomorrow morning actually!) but I look at the hot rod community in a different light than the stock/restoration/musclecar/supercar community... in fact, that's the main reason WHY I got into hot rods in the first place... the "acceptance" and lack of separation and classification and general BS of the haves vs. the have nots I've seen for so long in the musclecar world... I guess it just pains me to see the same type of crap when the "steel vs. glass" stuff starts because its basically (as you noted) the same BS I wanted to get away from in the first place. IMO, a hot rod is a hot rod is a hot rod... we should all be in it together, not separated based on what your body is constructed of. I can have as much fun at a rod run, on the highway, or in my own garage with my glass car as you can with your gennie 75 year old steel car... like it or not, that's a fact. My 2 "Deuces":
I am far removed from a " elistist " I previously said in this same thread ... ... Build or buy what you like ... not what other folks say or like ... BUT ... the principal is the same IMHO ... fiberglass cars/Yenko clones Same thing for all the fake Z28's, Shelbys and fake Hemi cars ... ALL the fiberglass guys say " Fiberglass is Great " or " Steel is too hard to find ( or too hard to PAY FOR ) and the guys with steel cars ... as a general rule say " Only Steel for me " I say ... buy or build what you want ...
Deuce, was in no way implying you were elitist, I know better, and did read your earlier thread... and I agree, it IS the same thing, and that's why I hate it... I was hoping the hot rod world was different than the musclecar world when it came to acceptance. Hack, I even understand sorta what's been said about original cars having a certain "history", or "mistique" about them that a glass car doesn't have... I don't think there's anyone who "prefers" a fiberglass car to a cherry steel original, but still even with that said if that's what you got, so be it...drive it, cruise it, race it, shine on it, and enjoy it... I don't see a need to trash a car, a builder, or an owner just because a car is not made of steel. That's all I'm saying on the topic... going outside now to drive my soul-less/wanna be/fake/ fiberglass/ kit car/ deuce a few miles before it rains... later!
*waves hand!* I never looked for a steel body - I wanted lightness so bought a glass body without floor and will add some aluminum. You'd have to cut out a LOT of steel to get a real '55 as light as mine will be... But I realize this car is o/t for here... *ducks*
Just don't add strips of metal to the gel coat and let it rust or get "creative" with the Rust-all and cordless drill.... Fake patina on a fake car is double gay. hahahaha.
