I'm laughing now, but this was kinda scary... Todays Headline! Chopped coupe falls on idiot! Well,it hurt...but I knew my Marine Corp instincts would kick in and I'd get out without chewing and arm or leg off... I had my cellphone in my pocket, but I did'nt think anyone would get to me fast enough. My neighbors are old and would'nt be able to help, unfortunetly they don't know anything about old Fords either and don't have all the info I crave... Hahahaa! I read a post early this morning about one of the Dirty guys moving a nicely painted coupe body and thought, F- it... I'm not going to wait till someone gets home to help, I've got work I gotta do. Now I've also moved bodies before by myself with no problem...just not today. This chopped coupe has a nerf bar on the back, so I figured I'd pick it up by the firewall, let it rest on the nerf bar, then put a prop under the firewall while I repositioned myself and rolled the car under, repostioning the prop a few times. Well, that did'nt work! When I tried to reach for the prop, the car slipped in the mud since it just rained for two days...and the car came down on top of me. Sure I could have dropped it, but.... ya know? Even in a perfect world this was a dumb idea as I actually have all the tools to do this correctly. Patients is a virtue! So anyway, my legs were pinned under the firewall with my feet stuck under the front p***enger cowl foot. The bottom of the firewall was in my hands and cutting my fingers as I tried to keep the pressure of my legs and feet. I thought about trying to get at my phone but knew that would take too long. Luckily the 2x2 steel tube and bogus prop was under the driver side cowl foot and gave me enough room to finally get myself out. Trust me, was'nt easy. If I was under cement, it would have been alot worse. I did wish I had my camera while under there...cause I' knew I'd look back and laugh... insert Minor Threat music here! Be careful my friends, hot rodding is a dangerous sport!
yeap that workin alone **** ****s sometimes..i had an intercom put in my barn so i could yell into the house if i needed to..but not always easy to get to..Dam glad yer alright!
**** man, that's some scary stuff. There are many days I look at the cab of the pickup and wonder, what can I rig up/what can I do to get that thing on the frame solo? I usually wait, or call someone. Your experience will help me make decisions. Sorry man.
Heard a yarn about an old farmer fatally pinned under a flipped tractor in a distant field...he p***ed the time while waiting for the buzzards by scratching his last will and testament on the fender with his pocketknife. Fender was supposedly probated and accepted. Glad your story isn't like that one! It took me a long, long time to figure out that I needed to excercise more care than a tottering pile of cement blocks on dirt...it's amazing I survived the under-car learning curve.
Wow. next time put a tire on the ground next to the frame, that way if it slips it'll hit the tire before it pins you down.
ouch.. glad you made it out ok... Reminds me of the time i got pinned under my T. Damn thing fell on me while i was unbolting it from my frame jig. Ended up with a 3/4 wrench pressing against my eye pinning my head against the concrete floor... The worst part was explaining the black eye to people.. PS. Any word on the JJ this year?
Well...I was gonna torq down some heads the rest of the day since my lifting abilty is now out the window. But I'll now be indoors for the rest of today. So this forum is now open for what an idiot I am... Thought about calling the cops, but figured they would'nt get past the dogs! Gay dogs that is! I also was more concerned with them leaking some top secret projects!
A friend of mine got killed under his van while doing a DYI oil change. Not good. Glad you lived to remind us all.
I actually just walked back into the house after starting to take a body off the frame by myself. I was under the car thinking about how dumb it was to be out there alone until at least 7AM under a car by myself when doing something like taking a body off. I took the engine out instead and left the body for tomorrow night when I can con my neighbor into coming over and drinking my beer.
Whenever I work on a vehicle with the wheels off, even when it's on jack stands, I lay the wheels and tires flat under the frame.
That was a hard lesson, the neat bit is you learned it the first time. It took me twice that long, I was doing a particular job on my bike when it fell on me and broke my cheek bone. Two years later same job same bike same accident same cheekbone. I know I know... These days I try to work smart not hard.
Is it wrong to think this is the funniest post on HAMB? LMAO! Glad your ok, and a little wiser for the wear.
"I guess I make too much **** Someday we'll look back and laugh " Scary stuff man. Hope your dijits heal up okay.
"I now know what its like to be a Ford ch***is." I thought you were going to say that you sat outside for 70 years and turned to rust. Glad you are OK! I've had some panic moments when I thought, "why am I doing this -- now -- when no one knows where I am -- and no one can hear me scream...?" And I'm currently moving the contents of one garage to another, and have been using "innovative" ways to lift and move things (including moving my '32 ch***is all by myself -- not easy). Today's task is to move 4 engines. Thanks for the reminder to be safe about it.
Oh no!!! ...The cursed car is back! Yup, this car likes me....it has returned once again. This time, I'm getting even with it, gonna cut it all apart and put it back together once and for all! I'm gonna get you ****er!
DD, Next time your trapped just give me a call. It'll only take about 25 minutes to get to your shop, and 30 minutes to get past the dogs. Boltwagon
I'm a big fan or knocking on doors of people who live next to me but not telling them what I'm up to until they get there. But my fav is having my sister I live share the house with help me with my lifting, kinda of a stalky girl, family bonding ya know.
Pulled a 47 Ford coupe apart, body off,etc.etc. Same with a 37 Chevy coupe. I FIRMLY believe there is NO subs***ute for a lot of body's and a phone, just in case. Let the signifigant other man the phone, just in case. Lots of friends, but most important is only ONE person giving instruction, get this settled first. Havent scratched a finger yet. (Maybe I'm OVERCAREFUL?)
Looks brought back from the dead. I have 2 boys and they both know how to use my cell phone to call Fire, EMS, and MOM but MOM doesn't get called unless their CERTAIN I'm DEAD! I've been to the ER more times than they have since they were born. Come to think of it, I've been to the ER more times this year...maybe I need to be a little more careful.
Hahahahaa, yup....this is the car that won't go away! This coupe has been p***ed about the Hamb, I bought it from Vaphead off Ebay. Then Justin had it, can't remember his Hamb name. Then I bought it back as it just sat in his barn for a year. Thats about the time I was working by myself and this body fell on me... boy I wish I had pics of that! I had bought it back because people use to write me about this car wanting it so bad... as soon as I bought it, everyone dried up as the great depression rolled in. Then Joe rolled over one day and he had to have her...so off she went! Welp, now she's back... but this time, she ain't gonna get me again, hahaaa. I'm very excited about this build as Joe wants a nice traditonal hot rod. Been doing alot of early hot rods with 60's style lately, so this is a nice break. Cut the frame yesterday... shall be fun!!! Looks like Mr. Vap will supply us with a few parts as well....small world!
I had to fly out to the middle of no where to pick up the remains of a guy that got trapped under his car and died when I was in the Army. Not pretty, it taught me to be more than careful (It had obviously taken this guy a few days to die) Be careful out there guys. Glad your OK DD!
