I like the ones on the bottom with the built-in gussets. They would look better too. Neat & clean. Tucked up under the rails. JH
Both aren't bad.....if ya use the top ones, weld 'em to the INSIDE of the rails and use the bolt holes as plug welds......then a triangle gusset from frame bottom towards eye......
so both would work, with no pro/con with eaither...i was just sujested to use the bottom, with a boxed frame, with no explanation to why it was better than the top ones....
I'll give it a go ... If you had an un-boxed frame, you would be better to use the top style as it is mounted to the side of the frame which would be the strongest place. But when the frame is boxed, the bottom flange would be rigid enough to weld the lower mount to it, and since it is gusetted it will end up being stronger.
so the bottom of the frame rail would be ideal,if it was strong enough, if a stock model a frame..so when you boxed it, its now strong enough, but if i have already have the top ones, any reason to change the the bottom ones other than looks....
If you already have the top ones, just use them. The reasons were explained, but the advantage is marginal and both styles have been used for years.
cool thanks i will use the ones i have, on the inside of the boxed frame...then a triangle gusset from frame bottom towards eye......as stated in an ealier post....
No real need for the gusset, the force is front to rear, not side to side. Use 'em, they will be fine. Look for cracks and tears after the first long trip, then once a year.
ok just when i thought i was out they pull me back in.....the need to ck for cracks is because of that style of mount,or would that apply to the other mount as well...
well with going with the top mounts, making sure the axle is square, set at the ride hight, and my mounts clamped in place i have 5 degree caster...so now iam thinking of setting the cross member back more, it was only 4 degrees when i got the frame...its an after market one for a boxed frame....
Also the bottom ones have 5/8 I believe holes for heim joint / bolts the top ones has a tapered hole for early for tie-rod ends Rusty
