the "New" issue of Garage...

  1. As usual anticipation has gotten the better of me, so as I moseyed on down to get the new issue I wondered what I was to find inside.

Par for the course, the lay out is great, the pictures are killer, (even the feel of it in your hands is good) but it seems there is a seeping of mainstream cluttering in this once aggresive maverick magazine. I can't help but feel that Mr. James is not practicing what was said when he purchased it from Senor Stoner, that he would be "hands off." (revenue through advertisiment is a requirement for all magazines)

Yet are we just witnessing the maturing of the rag? or is it becoming another vehicle to smatter the WCC logo everywhere? (though, i will give that there is some refreshing creativity in how the advertisements are executed).

I still like it over all.

As an aside, I think Ryan needs to get some sort of Alliance kick back from almost every magazine out there, as it seems that everyone of them just clicks through the HAMB to find thier next subject (which kicks ass!) I must have seen a HAMB car on the cover of 3 magazines in the stands. And even some of the Limeys across the pond got a picture in Classic and Sports Car.

    No shit...

    .....

I love Garage Magazine... The WCC magazine insert was unfortunate. I think marketing like that belittles readers personally...

i'll probably subscribe as i've been buying the issues lately. my only complaint, and it is minor, is that "low brow" and "lifestyle" are overused. i know they're appropriate when describing the demographic and art and etc, my impression is that it makes it seem like it's trying real hard AT TIMES. lifestyle talk makes me picture the douchebags that bought the 300$ von dutch originals pants with fake wrench marks and sewn-in shop rags, if that makes any sense. then again, maybe i'm soured on that shit in general... that being said, i like the variety of stories they carry, (turbonique last month kicked ass, as did the lowrider wars story) which frequently delve into history and sociology to proportions resembling a scholarly journal. photos rock, good artwork, i really do dig the mag.

  5. I've subscribed for around 4 years now.I look forward to each issue, and read it from cover to cover for every morsel of printed word, to fully appreciate it. The very things that make it stand out is the "low brow/lifestyle" view of our hobby.
I'll admit I was concerned when Pay-Up Sucker publications purchased it, and I have noticed some evolution since. I would much rather have the mag evolve due to financial concerns (it is a business)....than not exist at all.

  6. Nice job Stoner and company, I'm diggin it!! Got me a full set and have read every word. I'll probably subscibe in about 2 years ( I'm a terrible procrastinator).

Kali and I appreciate the way Stoner went out of his way to give us exposure and publicity.....he knew what were fighting, and what some of our obstacles were.
The article on Kali came at a time when her spirits needed all the support she could get.
    That's something I won't forget.

    Thanks again,Stoner

Honestly, how many of us read magazines or the tech articles? If I have tech questions, I usually call my friends or log on here. I guy magazines for feature cars, show coverage (which usually pales in comparison to the coverage on the HAMB), and for good articles and heads up on new parts. With that said, I don't really mind the fact that Garage is more of a lifestyle magazine based around cars than a "car" magazine. The fact is that Garage is more compelling read than almost any other mag out there. It is well written and does the reader justice by not insulting their intelligence with gutter talk, as if the fact that I dig traditional rods makes me some sort of dolt that can't comprehend words with more than 4 letters

It's one of the very few cover to cover reads for me. For that, they got my advertising dollar. Same with Zombie.

I only skimmed through it waiting at the ATM for cash to come out. Wasn't impressed enough to buy. I wasn't aware it was as "life-style" oriented as it appears. More mid century greaser meets Hot Topic goth from what I saw. Yay.

I save all the money from buying other rags and stick with TRJ.

  22. They're magazines. You take them in the shitter with you when ya need to pinch one off. Unless YOUR car is in them. Then, they're Important Cultural Artifacts.

I ate lunch at Cisco Burgers today. Really good food. They don't sell Garage there. IMO, Cisco Burgers is the best thing Jesse has built.

Hey, Big Dad in Fort Worthless--I'm not arguing with you, just curious: what makes you say that? Is it all the photography? The fact that you can find it almost everywhere now compared to before Mr. Wonderful bought it? Is it the stories you can't find anywhere else? Maybe it's the pull-out poster in every issue? Wait--it's the matte satin coating on the cover, right? Or could it be that you don't like 6 issues per year for the same price as when it was quarterly? Maybe you don't like it because there's 20% more in each issue than before?

    Like I said--just curious...
