Harvey's Broiler, later Johnie's, in Downey, CA
was partially demolished recently by unauthorized individuals on two bulldozers.
The restaurant and drive-in was used as a backdrop for several movies
and was home to local cruisers for more than fifty years.
Funny how this can sadden someone a half a continent away.
Here's my idea of what the fun times there must have looked like.

If you want to read more on this, here's a link.

This is all I got this week

My first attempt at striping. I learned a lot of what not to do.

    1) Don't paint outside when road contruction is happening on your street.
    2) Don't paint outside when temps are over 90 degrees.
    3) lay off the caffine before trying to steady your hand.

I have an even greater respect for all you pros out there. This isn't easy at all. I'm sure with some practice I can get it down.

  3. i always look forward to the art show each week.....haven`t contributed for a while so heres a doodle i`ve been working on...not quite finished yet

Me - I am diggin' shifter knob....

Wish it made sense in my car - I'm pretty sure that I had one of those on my high school car aka "corn chip" (named after myself).

pinup girl's sculpted. she's 6 1/2" tall, head to toe (and she's got some nice looking toenails dammit). i spent about two weeks on her and had 8 hrs in her face alone... this is my first figure sculpture.

here's the rear view. shows how she'd be oriented on a shifter. she'll be reclining and looking at the driver in a kinda-sorta "feel good" sorta way.

here's her legs and a close up of her face. not a bad face for being 3/4" tall. like i said, first figure and first face i've ever done. the mold release has set for about 30 minutes and after i finish cruising the HAMB, i'll check everything to make sure it's dry and start mixing rubber for the mold. i'm looking forward to seeing her in hi-polished aluminum... and i know what will be going in my impala next.

one last shot, i think this is my favorite view. wish you could see how her hand can be seen through her hair at the back of her head, i'll make sure to get a shot of it in metal.

ha, thanks man. i think she'll do nicely for a shifter knob. i'm really pretty pleased with her and learned a ton from start to finish on this project. plus, flipping through barracuda magazine and the like is considered "work" doing this kinda stuff. can't wait to see a bunch of them all done, shining side by side!

    chromedrat- thats simply amazing work.

    my contribution:
a sketch i did last week, then rendered in photoshop. This is the first thing Ive done in photoshop, and it sure wont be the last. Im kicking myself for not trying it earlier. Turned out pretty decent, but still need the outer front wheel done, and some details.

Bad ass Robin. Gotta love the art provided to us by the great Jim Phillips. Skate wheel shifter know is a nice touch as well.

  21. so which part of `fail` is that then?

  22. Ryz, how do you figure those are failures?!?! Look pretty damn cool to me!

Robin, what's the story on the Speed wheels bike? Does it belong to someone at Santa Cruz? I like the shifter too, I've got a Schmitt Stix Sawblade wheel for a gas pedal in my V-dub.

Nothing new from me yet, I've got a few projects on the go but nothing finished yet. I'll try to finish something up before the end of the show.

    Great work so far everyone!

I've been scratching out some paint on a yamaha star something or other and got bored so I hit the 58 with some chicken scratch too! And if these come out grainy and not very clear I apologize in advance...it's the only way I can make my striping look halfway decent HAHA!(or maybe it's just a crappy camera)

    Hey Art People!

There's obviously talent galore here. I know the weekly art shows are a big favorite of many members.

So...how about some of you kicking in a piece of artwork (or two) for the Silent Auction ant the HAMB Drags?

It doesn't have to be your most valuable work - and don't worry about mounting or framing your drawings and illustrations. Just send them as they are. Even your sketches are of value to someone.

If you - or a friend - can't make it to Joplin, box up your donated item, or put it in a protective tube, and mail it to me. I'll make sure it gets to the auction without being damaged.

    Stan Weber
    510 Allen
    P.O. Box 81
    Firth, NE 68358

And don't forget to include your mailing address so I can send you a souvenier "I gave" pin. You'll also be entered in the exclusive (donors and helpers only) drawing for the "Big Sound of the Drags" record album.

Here's your chance to do something worthwhile for the HAMB - and who knows? - the exposure may be just what you need to jumpstart your full-time art career.

Thanks in advance for your generosity. Remember, every cent collected goes directly to Ryan to help with event expenses.

P.S. It would be great if I could have your donations by the 20th or so, in order to allow time for me to get it ready to display.

Don't hesitate to PM me if you have questions.

Nice start to the show GaryC., I like it! Surf Monkey, I always like seeing Beattys tanker and push car, great! Buller, thems some nice panels! Everybody's been workin' hard I know!
Well, heres some more of my lost sketches that keep turning up. Something you could do with a C-cab body. I was thinking about shortened Ranchero's and Camino's , so I did a 59 real fast to see if it would look good, I don't know. A picture of what my bug will look like. A Fiat for comparison? And a good ol 53 Chevrolet. A sedan made into a hardtop with all the tricks, Radirs. I drew it for a guy that was thinkin about fixin his up, he went to high school with me. He didn't dig it so I still got it. Its hard to push traditional down south, but its getting better all the time.

the rubber is setting up fine on the molds, which is nice because i don't wanna have to clean every square inch of the new stuff with acetone to try again! i'm going to be pretty busy over the next few weeks because i want to see these in metal pretty bad. i dig her, man. the best view of her face is from a little higher than the shots a buddy of mine took, but she's a doll.

harrison, i'll let ya know when more progress is made. they'll be a little more than the skulls i do as she's a lot more complicated, but it'll still be a helluva good deal for the money.
