Air conditioning in an open hood high boy

  1. That's how I'd do it, all "period" parts. Especially an old under-dash unit. Even though it's the firs thing hot rodders dumped back then, had I been around, I'd have had the fastest car around with the A/C intact. My car would have been truly "cool"(bad pun), because I'm a climate-controled pussy.:D

Being so uncomfortable that you either are miserable or, worse yet, you decide not to drive your car on a hot day is just stupid.
Do a nice installation and enjoy.
The basic "man on the street" doesn't know or care if you have A/C.
Sometimes this snobbish behavior starts to remind me of the street rod crowd at their weekly "Folding Chair Festivals".
    Bullshit! Be comfortable. Drive often.
My friend, "Sloppy Seconds" is building a bitchin period correct rod as we have seen in his updates here on the HAMB. Now he wouldn't and shouldn't ever put in A/C. That would be a felony in these parts. He wouldn't even consider it. Nor would I with a car like that.
But hey, I drive my '34 all over the place. I'm a pre-Geezer (56) and after working outdoors all my life, I'm sick and tired of being hot and miserable.
Some afternoons I crank the A/C up, turn on the IPOD hooked up to my Alpine and hit the freeway.
Looking out of chopped windshield while in the fast lane, listening to my favorite tunes and being comfortable..........PRICELESS

  3. On the 58 Buick, that particular compressor would have been for the factory air ride system.

Yeah, and don't get me started on electricity! People lived in the dark just fine for thousands of years and cooked over fire. Fucken pussies and their light bulbs and fancy electric ovens. Hell for that matter what's wrong with horses. All hot rodders and their internal combustion engines are a bunch of panty wearing sissies

  6. Isn't part of running a hot rod thumbing your nose at 'normal' society a bit?

Why ask if others approve of your car?

Someone, somewhere is not gonna like the car or something on it.

What do you care if they're not happy?

    You gotta make yourself happy.
    Not too difficult, right?

  7. Haha funny, if the temp goes below 80 I'm freezing, it's all in your mind, you can get used to it, just try.

  16. I did it for a customer on a 29 A once...Ya know the condensor in between-in frt of the radiator and grille shell is UGLY so I didnt put it there.
I mounted the compressor off the right side of block/crank pulley area, down low with a tensioner...left the aluminum finish showing on compressor.... and the hoses straight down thru the kick panel inside the frame to compressor...
Then the real problem[Condensor]...was mounted horizontally under the car floor, with a intake scoop/shroud and a 2300CFM electric fan
    worked fine [in Oklahoma].....

In my opinion, the A/C will look out of place. My coupe is hot as living heck, my wife can't stand riding in it in the summer, can't fit the kids in it, it's way too loud and I love it. However, I do dig hangin with the family so I am building a custom with a hood and one of those thingys that you mentioned. :)

well since you asked our opinion. lots of factors to consider. How hot does it get in Buffalo during the summer? Are you a cold weather person or do you prefer heat? You obviously won't be driving it all year long since I guessing your not mounting a snowplow on the front of it (Up state new york is known for get between 12inches and 4 feet of snow at a time). So my thought is this. Don't do it. You don't need it that bad. If you lived down south or in the midwest where it gets schorching hot that would be one thing. I guess i'm one of those younger guys who's opinon doesn't matter. But i am overweight, I live in Atlanta and i hate heat and humidity. I don't plan on running it in my 59 f100 or my 31 Model a pickup. just my two cents.

  21. Whats the deal? The windows in a plymouth don't roll down or what?
I live in Texas and well I never use A/C and I wouldn't put it in or around a hotrod. but thats just my opinion others may enjoy A/C greatly but I just like wind so I'd say if you must have it, hide it. But don't rollin around with the windows down make your car look that much cooler. Just my 1 cent

I've had this thought going on in my head as well. Being in central Florida, I look at the summer with the heat and humidity as the southern winter (just drive the car from October to May). On the other hand, the Studebaker national meet will be in Phoenix during June in a couple years. Along with the week in Arizona, I'll have a trip through the south to get there and back. I've decided to install the A/C.

Now with the car being a '64, I have no problem with hidding this system. But my goal is to make it blend in by using a vintage A/C evaporator, a Sanden compressor painted to look like an older GM compressor, and old style A/C lines.

Larger cars of the '50's had A/C as an option. I looked at a '59 Fleetwood monday and it had factory A/C. I'd bare your A/C to the world by making it look like an older system pulled out of an old Olds 98, try to find the original compressor brackets and pulleys and install the sanden in it. You can have lines custom crimped for the right length. Good luck & keep cool.

your ethere building a traiditional hot rod
or a street rod to look traiditional depending ON what type shows you go to a REAL hot rod will fit in ANY were BUT a car built along street rod lines A C altinator raidials ect will always look out of place at certain shows

with traditional hot rods and kustom cars one must always SCRAFICE for the look

its all about the look baby

I'm riding down the highway in my Coupe with the electric windows rolled up, A/C on, satelite radio blasting. Got the 700R4 in OD with the cruise control on, tilt wheel pulled down in my lap, driving with two fingers (power steering), and I pass a couple of babes in purple and red roadsters who give me the one finger salute and I misread their lips as Your damned sexy when they are actually saying you damned pussy!. Yeah baby! right on! Catch ya at the next gas stop!

I saw a ford pickup at a show a year or two ago, I knew something wasn't right when I was lookin at the engine. It took me a moment but there was no generator (3 carbs) not relocated, just not there. after looking thoroughly, I spotted an alternator hiding under the oil pan. He had a 2 groove crank pulley and ran the water pumps off that, then used the rear groove to drive a tiny alternator.

I know Sanden makes a tiny compressor (takes up about as much space as 3 packs of smokes) so you might be able to do that. if you are set on A/C. However, how hard is it to come up with one of the "bee catcher" window units mentioned earlier? It would look better, and you could take it off when it's not needed without leaving any permanent effect on the car.

Not trying to be snide or anything, we never had those in Alaska.
