Well I am guessing it won't work as great as they think it will. For one.. The 3K voucher has alot of restrictions.. for instance the car has to have passed inspection, so no one is gonna grab the "old car" in the barn and get 3k for it. Then on top of that you can only use the voucher for cars 3 years or newer or light trucks 3 years or newer.. for someone still driving a '64 chevy p/u as a daily driver that still might be too expensive a deal.

sure there will bea few people who cash in on the deal, but usually the cars I end up buying haven't had an inspection in 10 years and the ones that are.. are usually worth more than 3k.

  8. I dont know about Texas laws, but here in Ar. prolly 80% of the vehicles that qualify for that program would NEVER pass an inspection (Arkansas has no annual inspection law). You tell someone that in order to meet the requirements they will need to spend a few hundred bucks and theyre gonna tell you to get f*@^ed. 95% of them arent going to give a shit that the Kelly Blue Book says their 90 Taurus is only worth $475.00, bc to them its going to be worth $4750.00. Its a personal "pride fo my ride" kinda thing......

  9. I'll bet anything that voucher is only usable if you pay sticker price, which makes it worthless.

It's about time that "antique" vehicles and "old" vehicles got different definations. Scrapping vehicles older than 1996, but newer than about 1980 seems reasonable. Vehicles 1979 and older shouldn't qualify for the program. How many 79 and older vehicles do you actually see on the roads?

I don't see this ever becoming a problem for us...especially since the MAX allowed purchase price towards the "new" vehicle is 25,000.

Go take a look at "new" cars under 25K, and you will find the pickins to be pretty slim....

    and it's up to 3500 bucks...not a guaranteed 3500 bucks.

Hmmm, doesn't appear to be tageting classics, hot rods, musclecars, etc, in particular, but I'm always concerned over these types of programs because they're almost always gateways to more aggressive ones.

My favorite thing to tell those so concerned over the excess pollution of old cars is to count the number of cars they see on the road all week long that are older than '76 or so. Even here in L.A. it's maybe a couple dozen unless there's a show going on. Contrast that with the couple thousand or so new cars I pass everyday on my way to work...
Yeah, old cars are the problem...

Sounds like typical bureaucratic "feel good" legislation. Oooh, look at us, we're saving the rainforest:rolleyes: . Notice no one mentioned the amount of emissions made building a new car. If someone's only able to afford a $1000 beater, they won't have cash for a 3year old car, even with the rebate. God, it sounds like some socialist program dreamt up over here.

Then there are income restrictions......... Jeez....So if you work anywhere other than McDs' or Wal-Mart you are out of luck. If you do, you can't afford the new car to start with OR the state's deal entices you into getting yourself in over your head.

Stupid plan that you can tell was concocted by government employees.

I can't speak for Hybrid cars, but our Hybrid buses' battery pack is worth $60K and the voltage inverter is $35K. Too rich for my blood...

If I lived in Texas, the thing I'd be most pissed about is that my tax dollars were paying for this Al Gore type, feel-good nonsense. And I'd bet a week's pay that the car dealers association has greased plenty of palms so that all involved will benefit from this hypocrisy.

I just hate that the huge number of persons out there that buy a new car every three years are going to be looking at ALL old cars as polluters when they skim over an article like this. Then hit the voting booths with an attitude that all old car owners are below them and pollutin the earth when actually they are targeting the 80's rice burners and jalopys.

I don't want to open a can of worms here, but our tax system is voluntary. They say that you can voluntarily tell them how much you make.

So what I'm saying is that the goverment can bend, fold, spindle and mutilate the meaning of damn near any word to fit their convenience. Just wait and see.

Did anyone catch this line in the article-"The older cars also tend to be driven by the working poor and others who can't afford a new car or truck." WTF, they slap this insult to our rides and our persons and then they want us to crushem for pennies. They can kiss my ass.................

At first, I thought I'd found a perfect way to get rid of my 'extra' 300zx, but then I found out I'm not qualified/interested because:

    1) I make too much money
    2) I don't want a new car (payment)
    3) If it could pass inspection, I wouldn't want to get rid of it.

    Stupid :(
