new vehicles have so much crap on them, to build them must create a huge amout of polution, my old truck is all steel, whats not steel i could hold in one hand i`m sure.

 

You're right, but if they're like California they won't pass it because you altered the engine or emissions system from original...

Never mind it runs cleaner they just want it (frankly all cars) off the road.

Therin lies the rub. It won't hurt "us" directly...we will keep our Rides...however, the Junkyards that crush out-that hurts us by removing OUR resources.

A few years back, I read an interesting article about growth versus waste when it comes to Automobiles (ANY car) and the simple fact of the matter was the expense neccecary to destroy and clean up an older vehicle was damn high compared to maintaining an older one.

Kinda makes "Planned obsolesence" a mothefucker...don't now what I'm talking about?
try to find parts for a 90's vehicle at your local Dealership. The reason you can find 'em at Auto Zone is the Pacific Rim buys backstock, AND the tooling to make new parts...meaning your Chevrolet's parts come from China...
add to that the wonderment about Cars like the "Chery"- which is basically a Geo Metro- Built by China in it's entirety. Chevy got pissed and Tried to Sue over Copyright,manufacturing, and trade laws...but it didn't do shit, because WE sold them ALL the stuff to build 'em!

 

It's so easy to pick on a minority that isn't a protected minority.

Some years ago- maybe in the 1990's ?
There was a report (epa?) that announced there was something like 20,000 or 40,000 pounds or so of pollution and non-recoverable waste involved in the making of ONE new car.
They added up the weight of the particulates coming out of the smokestacks, the machining shavings, the portion of trimmed-off plastics that wouldn't recycle, the non-recycleable waste in the foundry that casts the parts, and the coal waste and byproducts used to make the enormous electrical power it takes to run the machines that drill, carry, grind, weld, wash, smash, press, etc.

It was a huge number that exceeded the weight of the final car product by several times.

Somewhere else, years earlier they also had an official number of several hundred pounds as the amount that an old car would pollute or emit during it's "dirty" working life.

My point is that any older car that is already in existence can never put out enough pollutants even in 80 years of regular driving as the main family transport vehicle to even come close to equalling the pollutants created by making (BUILDING, not driving) ONE new car.

That last paragraph may sound absurd all by itself, but when you look at the report that counted the hundreds of pounds of exhaust pipe emissions from older cars, and the other report that announced a few TENS of thousands of lbs of pollutants and waste involved in making a NEW car...

Here's a long known but often forgotten statement-- Re-using is always cleaner, cheaper, more "environmental" than scrapping and re-creating. Too bad the trendy Earth Day people really don't care beyond cute slogans and the lazy thinking.

How many truck loads of coal must be burnt just to get the electricity to drill, grind, mill, and machine the raw castings into new engine blocks?
How many truckloads of coal are burnt to get the huge amount of heat it takes to melt a few new engine blocks?
How many truckloads of coal does it take to run the conveyors, stamp the sheetmetal, weld the seams, melt the plastics, and on and on?

I am not against being clean or being efficient, nor am I against factories, nor am I against new cars, but for some reason I do need to point out the obvious- that using or fixing something already in existence is usually cheaper and cleaner than starting from scratch no matter what the politicians say.

Here is a bold statement--- ONE old car is cleaner than any NEW car being built simply because of the fact that
the old car is ALREADY HERE.
Even if you let the old car stay "dirty", it is still MUCH CLEANER than starting over.

Let people buy all the new cars they want, but why target the less-than-one-percent old cars as a serious threat when they are nothing more than a fly landing on a large boat full of new cars? Catchy slogans and lazy thinking are what politicians count on to get votes. And we gladly go along.

Is anyone here able to do a search for that government report about how much is pollution and scrap is generated in the manufacturing of a new car? That info would be handy to have if there are accurate and "official" numbers with it.
