Hey guys, Just a quickie...Im wondering if anyone can tell me what max rim width you can get on the std 57 Chevy rear end/wheel well combo? Alos, what would be the best backspacing to allow for tire clearance to the inner wheel well? Thanx.... Rat
probably a 15"x 7" rim, wih maybe an 8" wide tire at most. i know that gm 15x7 chevelle /camaro style rally wheels work nice on 57's....and those are 15x7's. (the old corvette style, with the big centercaps and trim rings). the actual corvette rallys were 15x8, and i'm not sure about the backspacing on the 15x8's. if you want to get more tire under the car, you may want to look into moving the leaf springs to the inside of the frame rails. i've seen that done, and about a 10" wide tire will fit.
Frank, If you want some 10" tread, you have to swap the spring hangers side to side, as they sit on the outside of the chasis rails. swapping them lowers the car as well Cheers
No mate, Im not interested in "hot rodding" the car. There's a set of 15 x 8" wheels up for grabs and I was thinking that 15x8's wouldnt fit - it seems I was right. It seems a 15x7" rim is the max and that's cool with me, not gonna run big meats on this car - not for this baby !! So I'm guessin that 15x7's are the max without mods ? Rat
15x8 vette steel rally wheels (about 3-3/4" back spacing? I forget!) with a 255 tire will fit, it'll be tight! best bet is to try the wheels with some used tires and see if they clear ok. each car is different...each side of each car is different.....
I wouldn't have thought you'd be muckin' the thing up, I just give out the info - do with it as you please
I have Crager SS 17x8, with 3 3/34 back spacing. With 245/45-17 tires on the rear. ( they belong on My 83 el-camino but it's in need of a heart transplant) It'll get it this winter.... They don't rub the fender but have slightly rubbed the inner fender well on the inside at the top, only on the p***erger side. Didn't hurt the tire but the last time I had it on a lift I noticed the rub mark. But I can not run 8's on the front.
I have run the 15X8 Vette Ralley wheeel with 255's. Very tight. I have 15X7.5 ET slots now, but it's about the same. If you move the springs inboard, you could run a 12 inch tire or so. Probably have to narrow the rear end.
15x8's work good but you need the right back space. We are doing a 57 hardtop for my dad and he did a little research on this.If you use 4 1/4 inch back space you can run a 265 tire. It's tight but it works. You could go with 4 1/2 back space also. That is the max.You can roll the inside lip on your quarter panel.I have american daisys on my 56 wagon with a 4" back space and they fit nice on one side but the other is close.I rolled the lip and it works good.15x7 will work but you still have to watch the back space.
Squirrel is right. I used 255 BFG T/A radials on 15x8" Cragar SS's with 3 3/4" backspacing on my '55. Additionally, it was lowered with 2" blocks. I trimmed the fender lips adjacent to the tire sidewalls, resulting in ~3/8" clearance. One important issue: I had to disconnect the leafspring hanger to change tires. But it looked cool!
Thanx guys...great info !!.. I think what Ill do is stick with 15x7s as i dont want to lip the guards or ave tires rubbing the inner fenders when the car is loaded or when it leans. Besides, scuffed whitewalls look ****.... Thanx again !! Rat
I ran 15x8 Corvette rims on my '57 Nomad but can't remember what size tyre I used. They were really tight to get on and off but were fine in use with no touching.
What are you up to Frank? Asking alot of chev questions lately... Get the new wheels and tyres for your coupe??
Glad you didn't stop there Luke There's pics on here somewhere or if you ask Frank nicely he'll email some to ya!
