Having been a rockstar at one time.. I just want to say I there is some great info in this story. S10 4x4 rears are narrower then 2wd rearends.. I had the same thoughts as Glen about the upper mounts, so glad to see they were reinforced. My wagon had the factory G body set up (4 link) with bags mounted where the coils went. I was not happy with the side to side movement i got (and the mounts were tight). not sure what we did different then the factory. Got enough lift to allow tire removal but it had to be as high as possible.. but I was ready to rip it out and go with a 4 link and I recommend putting the bad forward of the rear to get move lift if possible. (I also recommend using a 2600 lb bag when ever possible for front and rear)... I am sure I someday I will be a rockstar again.. (you know us old rockers come back around for a reunion tour once we get done doing to much booze...

Keep on rockin in the free world.

Those shocks in the pics are just some napa brand shocks. I looked on the monroe shocks website and they have dimensions of all their shocks. Napa didn't have the monroe shocks in stock but had their brand shock that was just the same.

being somewhat of a photographer I surely appreciate all the effort you guys are putting into your cars to to look extra cool parked at the shows. nothing more cool than a 49 - 54 chevy on the ground with tall bias ply tires tucked up in the wheelwells.

me personally.. I'm just an old fart I guess. my 49 will be lower than practical, but I'm not touching my virgin trunk floor or inner wheelwells. no bags and a minor C-notch will have to do it for me.

the green 51 in the previous pics looks great on the ground. but it brings a tear to my eye to see the trunk and wheelwells missing in action. putting all that back has got to be a shitload of work.

I bought NAPA shocks part number 94095 - they are called Response Shocks. Blue box NAPA parts.

Pics can be seen in my Flickr link under "frame build" or I am not sure if these links works - Click Me and Click Me

    Hope this helps.

  10. I used an 83 G-body [a Cutlass 10 bolt] under my 50 delivery. It was actually too narrow! I had to use an offset wheel to keep the tires off my inner fenders but If you're gona cut them out anyway, go for it. Here's mine and yes, with a full tank of gas, it'd still rub around sharp corners...
I used American 8.5 by 15 inch wheels on mine..a look you're obviously not going fo,,,r

Looking for info on bar lengths. I am looking at using 27" for the bottom and 24" for the top, but it seems like the angle might not be steep enough to get good side to side control. Any info on lengths or top bar angles would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

GREAT thread guys... it looks like ya folks know what your doing,,but for me i wouldnt know where to start,i cant weld very well..if i was to go to a shop and have them notch my frame and build a bridge and install links and the bags how much do you figure it should $$ cost me $$... to have someone with experiance do it for me,,i do already have all the air ride stuff,,but labor and materials is what im looking asking about...

  19. I meant to post this a few weeks ago when I finished, but I've been wrapped up...

Lots to clean up and I still need to mount my compressor, finish my driveline tunnel, etc., but it's back on the road and rides WAY nicer than the leaf-spring setup I used to run.

Poncho...the parts for this part of my build weren't bad. I got my gas tank, 4-link, notch, and airbag stuff from Gambino Kustoms (he can quote you a price for that depending on what all you need). The tubing for the 4-bar brackets, bridge and the gas-tank frame was cheap and I used scrap for the shock mounts, air-tank mount, and other little brackets. Keep in mind that you'll probably need to shorten your driveline too.

Do you know anyone who can do the welding for you? If so, I'd encourage you to do the rest yourself as the majority of the cost will be labor for things most of us can do with some time and research.

That's just my spin on it, though.

Looking good Rusk......I'm still waiting on some parts from Suicide Doors..thats why I haven't been bugging you lateley!!:D....You said its back on the road, but you haven't finished the driveline tunnel? Are you driving it at stock height??

actually its quite the opposite. 4wd s-10 rears are actually 4 inches Wider than a 2wd rear.

as for wheelwells....Rusk i did the same thing that that towaholic did....but raised my wheelwells 3.5" in the back and 3/4" in the front so my rear seatback would fit back in. still gave me plenty of clearance, allowed me to keep the stock wheelwells and still retain the strength

  24. Cut, yes...finished, no...

I just rolled it like that to take it to the show and road test it...wouldn't you know I found a stretch of road that the sprinklers had been soaking all night

Hit me up when you get your stuff...I might even have some descriptions to help make sense of the build pics on my site by then.

I don't have many pic.s of my rear set up but here is what I have.
bags on top of rear, 2 link with a panhard bar, forward pivot are on side of frame.
my old set up had used the leafspring mounts as the froward 2 link pivot, this was fine but I found moving the pivot off the bottom of the frame and to the side got it down another 1-1.5 inches.
I had to re-do the rear anyway, ( its a long story, those who know know why ) so it was no big deal to re-do the pivots.

this was as low as it sat with the old rear setup.

this is after "thekid54" and I re-worked it.

Hey, how bout instead of mounting the bags and brackets on top of the rearend, mounting them behind or in front of the rear end, therefore the bags will sit lower when deflate and the car will sit lower. Am I wrong with this idea.

You are thinking the right way, the bags on the axle present another issue other then the "get the car as low as possible", although if the set-up is done right you can get the car low with bags on axle too. Ride is compromised as well. Vehicles with bags on axle tend to bounce more as the go down the road. By placing the bages behind the axle they act more like a shock.

The best lift (and some say ride) is achived by placing the bags on the lower 4 link bars about 10-15 inches from axle. Lift is more important if you really want to lay frame and get the vehicle back to a tall ride height (mini truckers use this technique a lot).

My frame is set up with bags behind the axle and I get about 6" of lift.

    Hope this helps.

Yea, that is called a canteliever (spelling?) style setup. I was thinking about going that route, but it won't work on my car the way I am going to have the link bars set up. That is why I was thinking about putting them behind the axle and using the slam specialties 82 bags, but still using the 72's in the front. I have plenty of room with the way my trunk and notch is setup. Ill post some pictures maybe later today. The 82's are alot wider and taller, so I was thinking that the ride would be alot smoother when the bags are at a low PSI when cruising since the trunk area is so much lighter than the front end. More of a cadillac float to them. I had a minitruck setup this way back in the day. It seemed to ride like a dream. What do ya think of that idea??
