  1. Ethanol, I like internal combustion too much to switch

    68.3%
  2. Diesel, possibly with an SVO ("Greasecar") conversion

    8.4%
  3. Electric, it's just as traditional as gasoline

    17.8%
  4. Nothing, if gasoline goes, I'll take up fishing

I don't want to start anything political, I'm just interested to see if I'm the only person who thinks about alternate power sources for our old cars. The way I see it, our hobby is one of the ultimate forms of recycling and alternate power is a logical next step.

    So how 'bout it?

Don't worry about it,,,GASOLINE ain't going away,,but in the future we might need VASOLINE when we get to the pumps,,,because we are gonna get screwed! HRP

I agree - there will always be gasoline in the USA.
Not sure of the quality and what type and if we can still use it in old engines without additives.

Who knows, if demand for other fuels goes up one day, gasoline might be cheap again...

Hey big cheese, Your smart for thinking this way. I was suprised to see electricity was favored in this poll. My car will probably take 4-5 years to build, and there's no tellin' what times will be like then.
Me personally I like the idea of a completely silent motor in a lead-sled.
It's built for cruising, not racing. Although a lighter hot rod would work well powered by electricity. (just run a hood please) I'm not worried about "Traditional" (on the inside) rods and customs are alway evolving.. Well, we'll see hopfully the technology in this area just improves....and the goverment will stop squashing anyone that tries to curb our gas dependancy. I think its all about the USA gov. using up the oil from other countries because its all they have left. Not to mention the Bush family is in bed with the Saudi Arabians (oops I got political) Gas made from corn, peanuts, hemp or other organic material could help bring back the american farm. I grew up in farm land every time i go back home there is on more strip-malls surrounded by new (****-built) homes........ So listen Cheese Let's swap idea if you got'em, I'm all for it. ____Trout

Hey, if it would eliminate global warming, I'm more than willing to run my Hemi on alcohol!...or nitro!

I have trouble believing the hype on ethenol. I've read some things that make me wonder. But then again everything has it's drawbacks.

I like Diesel. A turbo diesel can have pretty much zero electrical needs and make lots of power. And it can run on straight vegitable oil or a number of other possible fuels. Easy to find/make.

    For a 'right now' eco-friendly - I'd choose E85...

Long run "after gas" - I'd choose Methanol or Ethanol on an open engine compartment and go Turbo-Diesel biodiesel or SVO and a ton of boost/fueling on a closed compartment (easier to plumb up the turbos and such to look decent) :)

Ain't it funny,,,here in the south we have made some of the best corn whiskey for drinking purposes and the feds kept busting up the family business and their the stills they made it in,,,,,,

The cars that hauled the precious cargo were hot rods,,,

now the feds are now going into the corn mash business and selling it to us to putting it in our cars,,,,,something ain't right with this picture:eek: HRP

Are we ***uming that gasoline is gone because the oil supply has run out? Because unless we have wind, nuclear, solar and/or tide power plants in place by then, we'll all be riding horses and buggies again.

gasoline won't go away, it'll just get more expensive, and as it does, alternatives will become relatively more affordable.

I was suprised you didn't list any gaseous fuels in your poll. I work on natural gas engines for a living and they have some of the highest octane ratings out there. I think Propane is around 116 and Methane is around 118- 121. Serious complete burn.
Not too complicated to convert a conventional engine to run gaseous fuel.
Straight electric never took off because of battery limitations and the newer ones haven't gained much despite the new technology.

I think that if I had to in the future I would probably stay with internal combustion and run ethanol , or maybe go diesel and run veggie fuel.

although ethanol is a renewable resource it costs more to produce apparently. and ill run my car on moonshine if i gotta. but we arent ever going to run out in a few lifetimes.

I'll miss the sound of a V8, but I believe electrics are going to power most personal vehicles in the (fairly near) future. I agree that I'll have to run a hood if my car has an electric motor. Hopefully, gasoline will be used for enough applications to make it affordable and readily available for hot rods.

    ALKYHOL.
I would brew my own, and throw in some goodies for top end lube.

Only real downside would be the GIGANTIC DAMN GAS TANK I would have to build...I figure it would take around 100 gallons to make it to Mokan and back...with overdrive.

I'm surprised that Hydrogen wasn't mentioned. Nothing can top the sound of a 4 stroke motor of any kind, but let's face it, if push came to shove, a highly efficient combustible that's waste was water vapor ... sounds pretty neat to me.
What ever happened to the hydrogen fuel cell research we were so hot to trot for 7.5 years ago? Oh yeah, we weren't going to get political.

    That's funny... moonshine is ethanol....

  25. I'm not sure some of you guys realise where diesel comes from!

When "gasoline" goes, so does diesel, and after that natural gas. Oil may not disappear for a long time, but you sure better hope your grandkids are VERY well off to be able to afford it.

Those with the greatest dependence will suffer most.

I'm going electric, and I'll generate it with wind and solar. I've been researching suppliers for a few months.

And a quick link below. It's certainly NOT gospel, but it's worth acknowledging the possibility:

That's because diesel is a by product of gasoline production. It's a waste material that we now pay MORE for then gasoline? Ironic isn't it?

Growing corn is great. Pays my wages and makes you think you've done something great for the eco system...........except it costs more money and pollution then refining crude into gasoline.

Electric is nice, but I'm not ready for it anytime soon.......so I'll just keep on keeping on. I'll work my life away for the man, just so I can afford gasoline. What about my grandkids? I could honestly care less by then. If I worried only about the future, I'd forget the present........and burnin gasoline is WAY too much fun.:D

    Twin-staged turbos on a diesel of some-kind...

Once oil goes (not my lifetime...), some sort of hot electric setup I suppose...
