If gasoline went away, how would you keep hot rodding?

  1. Ethanol, I like internal combustion too much to switch

    68.3%
  2. Diesel, possibly with an SVO ("Greasecar") conversion

    8.4%
  3. Electric, it's just as traditional as gasoline

    17.8%
  4. Nothing, if gasoline goes, I'll take up fishing

I got a bunch of salt water near my house and almost constant sun, that plus a little algae and a degree in biochemistry means I will not run out.

I have even tried to make some in a small fish tank with some guys at work, we think with about 2-3 months worth of engineering we could do it on a small but profitable scale.

  2. the kits to convert to all electric are getting better, smaller and more affordable......hopefully the battery technology will catch up and we can get a lot more range. i took an alternative fuels cl*** and all i could talk about was how cool a model A would be to convert to electric........the others didn't think the same.

Don't care if cars run on dog turds. I'll put a herd of great danes in the trailer and the world can kiss their smelly ***es.

Whatever energy source it is, I'll find a way to cram more of it into the "power generator" and make a hot rod.

  5. Great acceleration. Lousy range. We'd need crank stations every couple of blocks.

  7. Ethanol will still run a V8 so I will go to that. If not I will drive way less in my rod but it will have the sweet smell of Methanol......

Wow, 5 people stupid enough to give up because they will have to run on Ethanol. Thats cool, more parts for the real hot rodders.

Tried to make some what? You have piqued my curiosity - just what are you trying to make in your fish tank?

I'll get myself 40 acres in the mountains of Colorado and build a straw bale house, solar panels on the roof, ride horses and grow my own everything....while the rest of the US starves to death. Gonna have a nice still too! for medicinal use of course.

Is that the new diet of choice? Drink til you puke? Rid yourself of ugly and unhealthy body fat by consuming your weight in booze?

Ragdoll and I like to do that.:D

Then polish the bathroom floor with our faces.

  13. If you are generating/diffusing it with waste electricity from your windmill or solar panels....great.
Otherwise, it takes more energy to dis***ociate Hydrogen and Oxygen than Hydrogen releases when burned.

  14. Diesel is the name of the guy that invented/discovered the process of compression ignition...and he designed is compression ignition engines to run on Peanut Oil, not #2 fuel oil. I have a bottle of Diesel fuel in my kitchen pantry and a tank full of #2 in my truck.
The post even says SVO/Greasel conversion.
I'm all for it. Burns cleaner to boot. Biodiesel works better than injector cleaner to clean up your fuel system.

The United States has billions of barrels of oil in wells that have been sealed off and labeled war reserve. We will definately be the last to run out of fossil fuel. That is why we import so much now because the supply and demand is beginning to wane.

Google "biodiesel". Learn it. No oil what so ever needed other than a bit to lube things up in the crank case and even that may have some plant based options.

Also try searching the Abiotic (sp?) Oil Theory. Has as much validity as the Peak Oil Theory. Theory is great, but it's just theory. Until it's proven it's just talk and ideas. Remember that at one point in history the theory was the solar system revolved around the Earth. And then later the theory was the Earth was flat. And way back there was worry that there was a limited ammount of salt available and it's an importent part of the diet. Isn't theory fun?!

  19. Can't help but think of a highway full of electric cars buzzing or humming along ever so quietly.... and then blasting past them in the coupe with open headers. Makes me smile, kinda like those long tunnels or overp***es, how can you help not putting your foot to the wood!!??!!

I have been contemplating blending my own fuel. I have to figure that you should be able to come up with some blend of bio diesel and alcohol that would work. Even if you have to use some actual gasoline whatever we can do to support ourselves (instead of people bent on our destruction) has to be a good thing.

Of course the trick is to generate the bio diesel and alcohol locally, so we don't use more oil to move the stuff around than we save.

I don't know if blending any biofuel and alcohol, which is a known corosive, is a good idea chemically. Alcohol when disteilled to the level needed for fuel, denatures human tissue on contact. Which is why it is poisonous to drink. It's corrosive to some rubbers and even some metals.

I have to wonder what it does to other bio-compounds. I suspect it would begin to break them down immediatly.

I only mention the possibility of blending alcohol and Bio diesel (and I'm sure other stuff too) as that is / was being tried in the program to replace 100 Octane Av Gas. Bio diesel is supposed to bring up the BTU content of the fuel and partially correct the vapor pressure.

Gasoline may not go away any time soon, but the EPA says that as of 2013 there SHALL NOT be ANY lead in ANY motor fuel of any kind in the US ever again. That includes Race Gas, Aviation fuels and Marine fuels.

I have a keen interest in that subject as the airline I work for flies Douglas DC-6's and Curtis C-46 Commandos (and some turbine junk too). The large Pratt radials we run tolerate the 'new' 100 low lead (2 grams of TEL / Gallon instead of 3) barely.

He's talking about biofuels made from algae. There are certain species that contain lots of natural oils that can later be processed into biodiesel.

I read somewhere that if all the farmers in the US stopped growing food crops and switched to feed corn for ethanol production, even if there were enough "refineries" to produce and distibute the stuff and every vehicle could use it the supply would satisfy only 2-3% of the need and we'd be starving in short order, along with better than half the world.
    Fair trade-off, I don't think so.
Gasoline is where it is at and where it will be for the forseeable future
