Hey, Metalprep, phosphoric acid. Sold in most paint stores, and some hardware stores. "Live everyday as if it was your last, because one day that will be true"
Clean it up and paint it with no problem should be a figure of speach. Doesn't really mean what it says, but you get the idea. Gibbs is oil-based if I'm not mistaken and will play hell on whatever real paint you put on it. When they say "clean it up" they mean clean it like you clean your junk after you just found out that ****** was a man. And clearing bare metal will never hold up, unless mankind came out with a new product I'm not aware of.
I use corrosion X and its worked fine for me. Seems to be the same as Gibbs http://www.corrosionx.com/
What do you mean by 3 stage clear? I think I lost you in translation. Bare metal is tough. Its hard enough getting a primer to adhere properly well to bare metal and even for that you have to clean the **** out of it give it some nice 40 grit to adhere to. Clears are made to go over bases, and bases are made to go over primers. You kinda can't skip the first 2 steps.
Don't get me wrong, the paint won't just fall off when your done spraying, but its not going to hold up nearly as well as regular paint will. Chances are after 6 mos or so, it will peel, crack, and leave you wanting more.
Corrosion X and ACF50 are great products if you're not planning to paint anytime soon. It'll get into every seam, nook, and cranny(that's what it's supposed to do anyway)and it'll keep coming out for years and you'll play hell getting paint to ever stick in the seams again... I know this because I've used it for years inside of aircraft and have painted some of them after treatment... BTW, ACF50 smells better
Gibbs works great. Actually gets rid of some existing corrosion. You can paint after it too. I've never seen it in stores.
one more thing low... lots of people are into this baremetal thing so much but they don't realize everytime they take 40 grit to it, it removes quite a bit of metal and if you do it often enough, the metal will get so thin, you start seeing holes... just don't keep grinding all the time cause when you go to weld, the metal is so thin it just blows right through. We have a couple cars in our shop that came in bare metal and this is the problem we're having now.
i dont think that any paint will stop rust happening, it just slows it down, moisture still gets down to the metal and starts making little veins of rust. i do alot of painting bare metal with rust paint, some clear and some flat black, with the clear i`d say it takes about a month for the rust to start. if i was going to leave my car bare metal i wouldn't paint it.
Enter the Model A I'm doing now. Usually use a blending wheel to knock down the wleds if there high and then 36 on a 5" to clean them. The car had quarters put on in the past, but very Afro'd. I touched parts of the quarter above where the old patch was and fell through.
