I think it was really George Poteet with his "stock" white w/red stripes Charger, and he just BOUGHT his way out of the ticket! :)

  4. Now that....I'd believe.

I can see a very well prepped charger doing it under controlled conditions with a good driver behind the wheel...but I doub't that's the case.

And 69 charger RT speedometers goes up to 150 - so how can you be sure of 175?. Getting clocked at 175 would probably include plane or helicopter speed enforcement and I doubt they'd let you off if they went to that kind of trouble to catch you.

  6. I tend to agree the story is just a story. But whoever made it up purposely used numbers just on the edge of being possible. The cop thing is what gives it away. What did he tell the cops to get them to let him go? "Sorry, Officer, I couldn't get it out of second gear" ??

I've had enough cars up to fast enough speeds, I think you could reach 175 on a long straight and very empty stretch of highway. The car would need to have a tall highway gear and a lot of horsepower. That's just about 3 miles per minute, and you'd be overtaking people at say 90 or so tops... odds are you'd either run right up someone's *** or wreck trying to avoid it.

I'm sure the car would also need some modifications to address aero issues at that speed, as some people have mentioned, the air pressures might cause lift, gl*** to pop out, and so on.

I'm also sure the driver would need some modifications, including a new set of shorts after he got out of the car and maybe a lobotomy beforehand so he could do something so dumb without considering the potential consequences.

I had a '74 Plymouth Duster, with a 318 and factory 2.45 geared 8 1/4, and I would routinely peg the 120 speedo on I-5, and it would just keep climbing and climbing after I pegged it. I know that light in the front end feeling very well! All stock, except for front/rear swaybars and a 4 barrel carb.

One time we were out doing it, I had to stop and pull off to get gas in Lathrop, while I was sitting in the station 4 cruisers with the lights on flew by on the freeway. I know who they were looking for!

I would bet I hit 140 or 150, but what do I know? I was young and dumb!

    Geez, nice video....ugh.
BTW, no American stock car can go 200 off the showroom floor.
No, that Charger didn't go 175....much less get let go by the cops.

I'm crazy, but I'm not stupid.

What would it take?..... Look closely at the the graphic on the side of this Charger. BTW- they did 225 at the 03 W/Fs and are a great bunch of racers.

JoeCool nailed it. This is such a bunch of ********. I bet after the cops let the guy go, he met the ****e Girls at KFC and they all took turns giving him a *******. The fact that any of you guys are buying even the first word of this horse**** story amazes me.

How much you want to bet the guy telling the story doesn't even have or ever had a Dodge Charger? I'll put $20 on it. Did he include the part of the story where he rode a wheelie up to 120?

And there's no way you could **** your pants if you were actually doing 175 mph. That's ******** too. Your ***hole would be clenched up so tight you wouldn't be able to drag a needle through it with a tractor.

Just saw a Dodge commercial where they say a Daytona went 200mph. So there's the basis for the story, the guy makes it 175 in a Charger thinking it's believable.

I heard that he was chasin a guy named Frank in a Highland green 68 Mustang.

By the way, the 50 dollar bill taped to the dash is yours if you can grab it by the time he hits fourth gear!

175 in a charger takes a mismatched speedometer gear and ring & pinion!

Strange tales do happen. 153 in a LT-1 powered 70 monte with about 3 miles of WOT headstart, sherriff showed both of us the radar during the half hour lecture. Fortunately the driver was a lanky bald teenager (alopecia made all his hair fall out) and the officer wished him luck with his chemo and let us go without so much as a written warning. We weren't gonna set him straight.:D

Prob with the meds he is on,,,its safe to ***ume its was a 6cyl Dart that was to the boards and the needle was 'pegged' like a 1 between 70-75...I could see where that could be slightly 'exagerated'!

  21. Sure...and if he would of shifted out of 3rd gear into 4th, he could of gone even faster!

I agree with SinisterCustom ... I too have been 140+mph in a 60's Charger. Back in the day, my parents daily driver was a 1969 Dodge Charger RT/SE. It had a 440 in it ... and at high speed (125+) the front end got very light ... spooky light ... so unless this Hemi Charger had modified suspension, I'd say this guy is smoking crack.

Here's our "family car" at Bonneville ... circa 1970's:

I had a guy at show tell me he had a stock 69 Chevelle with a 396 "fastest car around"...even faster than the 383 and 440 Mopar police cars that were after him "all the time"...he was telling me this cuz I had my 74 Monaco 4 door sedan with a 440 HP RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) engine "Bluesmobile" Mount Prospect police car { see link below for pics } in the show....having him believe that totally 'wrongly remembered' story was worth the time.

My Dad was 28 years in the Winnipeg PD traffic department....100-120 mph was a very high rate of speed for any chaser / chasee...

And those stories were ranging from the 61-62 ford sedans that they had on patrol....I think one made 36 mph one night...(they walked back to the station).... to the HP interceptors they had for the perimeter highway and outskirts.

and like the man said . "nothing is faster than a Motorola radio!"

I've got that article of the 190mph Charger on my site for some years now.

I've been at 125mph "odometer"-miles with my '62 Chrysler wagon a couple of times... but it sure is something "special". Especially one of the last times I did that and the front U-joint failed just when I let of the throttle...

    If A, then B:
If it's possible for it to be done, that particular guy and car did it?

And I got a Nobel prize the same day I won Daytona.

    Josh,

Unfortunately, the vinyl top was not black ... it was "dark green" ... it matched the dark green interior [SE (Special Edition) models came with leather and vinyl bucket seats, sport steering wheel, pedal dress up, light package, deep dish wheel covers, woodgrain instrument panel, hood-mounted turn signals and C-pillar SE emblem].

I'm pretty sure the "R/T stripe delete" was done at the dealership ... we bought the car "used" in late 1969 or early 1970 from a Dodge dealership ... the original owner had them take the stripe off and repaint ... then he traded it in for a different Charger.

Although the gold/green combo isn't to my liking, the car still holds many fond memories for me!

    Von Rigg Fink,

IMHO ... '68 Chargers are better looking than '69's ... I know there's not much difference, but the small round side markers are so much more cleaner!

Yes...'68's are MUCH better looking.....'69's got that UGLY Pontiac-esque grill...haha....
And ROUND taillights are waaaaaay cooler too.......

Hemi....Your Charger musta been green originally then??? NEVER seen a Gold one with a Green top.....weird.....mine was a factory ordered stripe delete car...also AC, PS, PB, PW, extra-cost center-arm rest (no console damn it!)...lots of options....no SE in '68....

I also don't recall seeing that chrome strip along the rockers before.....

Anyway, going OT here with all this Charger talk.....still a cool car Hemi!
