Could I get in trouble for taking it?

My sister lives in Redding, why not just PM me with the location, I'll have her go check it out and take some pictures..........then I'll take care of it, you won't even have to worry about it....life can be so simple.

Redneck, huh? So you would have no problem with people trekking around your property and hey, so what if they see a trinket or car that you "abandoned" outside your shop and scoop it up. It must be okay to take as long as nobody catches them.
It bothers me as well that some people hoard old cars/pickups, or they sit rusting on public lands. But, private property is private property. We have to put up with regulations telling us what we can and can't do with it. We don't want some private citizen telling us what we should do with our stuff.
As far as public lands, I would investigate laws dealing with artifacts on such lands.

what bothers me more than anything reading this thread is that someone would even consider theft and only be worried "if they would get in trouble". stealing is wrong period. Do the right thing if you are interested and contact the owners/caretakers. if that leads you to a dead end then walk away.

But is it stealing if something is abandoned on public land?

Is it stealing if I pick-up an arrow-head and add it to my collection. Should I track down Running Bear's family and ask them if I can have it, knowing he's been dead for 300 years?

Personally, I wouldn't waste a minute on rusted steel, no matter how rare or neat it might be.

My time is worth more than dragging more rusted crap home that you have to pretty much end up using it as a buck and rebuild the whole damned thing...

You don't want to mess with those cars. Are you talking about Bodie? They do have someone out there most if not all the time and if you get caught-you will be in a mess.I talked to a BLM ranger one time and he informed me that if you removed a junked pinto[junk car] with out a permit, fine and possible jail sentence. Not worth it.

Could be. If that arrowhead was on a state or national park, it could be considered a crime. I had rock hunters on my land all the time when I lived in MO. They said it was legal for them to be in navigable waters. There was only 3" of water in this creek ever!
Trespassing is trespassing, stealing is stealing. Period.

  9. What makes you feel you're entitled to them? It's not really a question of who they belong to, rather, they DON'T belong to you... -Betruger-

If its on federal land (state laws are sometimes different, can't comment on those) its federal property, and it would be stealing. Whether its an arrowhead or an old car, or even a glass bottle, if its a recorded archeological site, and on federal property thats anything over 50 years old, your looking at an ARPA violation (destruction and or theft of an archeological resource), which is a felony. Those BLM guys just love to go after this kind of stuff (I know, I took their training seminar).

having a title doesnt mean any thing? as a former licensed used car dealer and auto salvage owner believe me a title means everything, one scam going around a few years ago was a distraught lady would show up at a yard with a car for sale at a bargin price and a sob story and some sucker would pay cash for the car then the husband would show up with the cops and the title and claim the car. the cash buyer was SOL.

  12. Well said.

California has some laws regarding items on Fed or State land. Gone are the days when no one cared if you removed stuff. It was probably welcomed but times have changed.
I know that in some the desert and mountain mining areas you cannot scavenge or or remove any historical artifacts like arrowheads, bones, mining equipment, vehicles, buildings etc.
Bodie California is a good example. The stuff is kept in a state of somewhat arrested decay, for future generations to see and enjoy.

I don't know if this is statewide or just certain designated areas. There was a related thread about this a year ago

In your case you should investigate the ownership of the property and vehicles to determine if there is a legal way to proceed.

If it's available for sale you can buy it.
If it's available to salvage you will find that out.
If it's historical artifact then forget it.
If it's privately owned but not for sale then so be it.

Do not steal. Do not attempt to justify stealing as something else.

You don't want to be one of those piles of bones found at the bottom of a mineshaft 50 years from now.:)

You already answered your own question. You admit it is "bad". You just want someone to hold your hand, diaper your bottom and tell you it is ok. Unless the property is yours, it is felony theft, larceny, and most likely tresspassing since you don't even know who owns the land and vehicles. Another thing to think about is if someone gets hurt while you are stealing the cars, you may be responsible. Bottom line, don't do it.

  15. stealing a car even if its just a body rotting away is no good! why not just ask you might get a good answer or atleast find out more about it. its too big a risk, havent you ever heard of the "dumbest criminals" stories? some start of taking something not so serious and someone always ends up hurt or in jail. im not calling you dumb just saying you already know its wrong

First thing to do is go check them out, If it is like here they are so full of bullet holes you could strain youe spagetti in em, Used to be an old gohst town near me when I was a kid, had cars everywhere you looked, went back one yr and they were all gone. Heard the BLM had a big cleanup going and they all went to the crusher. So asking is not a bad idea, the crusher may be thier future anyhow.

With the chinese buying every bit of scrap steel available you can now 'redeem' your old car at any scrap yard here.No titles,no proof of ownership and plenty of cash available. The car is off loaded and is shredded in minutes.A quick $100+ for no outlay....get the picture? cars get stolen ,never to be seen again.

  21. The phrase is: "It is easier to beg forgiveness than to ask permission."

It's a prevailing attitude in our corrupt society these days.

Being public land, I would have nosed around to see if anything would even be of interest. If there was any, then I might have posted......... but if it was all worthless junk, I wouldnt have even posted as all this could be a moot point.

Being public land, there is probalby a way to get refuse properly also.

  26. I've heard about a Bodie curse.

He's describing a place that can be accessed from water. That rules out Bodie.

I love these philosophical discussions. I couldn't take anything that wasn't mine, but I doubt I can find the rightful owner. The land looks to be recreational use. I haven't found any record of that spot being isolated. In fact most people don't even know the town exists. The mineral rights are still owned, pretty much all this area has mineral claims. There are record of occasional run off tests for bad stuff in the water. I will try to get there soon and take pics, I love photographing old stuff, trying to keep anything new out of the shoot to keep it vintage looking.
