Fuel pump rod making noise

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by roadstar, Aug 19, 2007.

  1. I have a old 283 Chevy in my new roadster and it is making a noise that sounds like a lifter noise

I did have to put lifters and rocker ams and pushrods in the engine, it was used and had been sitting for years. I just wanted to get it running and I plan a full rebuild this winter.

Anyway back to the noise I have, I thought it was still a lifter noise but we narrowed it down to coming from the fuel pump. I have rebuilt and run sbc engines for alot of years and have not come across this problem and was wondering if anybody else has.

I could be the pump inself I suppose but it works fine, I put about 75 miles on the car shaking it down yesterday, a pump usually works or it doesn't.

Anyone ever have a fuelpump pushrod make noise?

I would suspect the fuel pump. I never heard the rod make a noise.

  4. Well by the looks of the lifters and rockers I replaced just to get oil to the top of the engine I know I will need a cam as well, it does run ok but not perfect, I am just wondering if the fuel pump lobe could be worn enough to make it clatter like a worn lifter, that is what the noise sounds like and is definatly coming from the pump.

Sure its not a loose timing chain? I've seen em slack enough to
wear holes in the timing cover near the fuel pump. And they will
    make some noise.

Fuel pumps wear at the pin that goes thru the arm. Once it gets opened up a bit it clicks like a lifter.
I've discovered that adjusting your lifters THREE times doesn't get rid of the problem...

Seen that happen too Ramblur! My old 73 Chevelle driver did that...but it wasn't really noisey at all.
I replaced the seal FIRST! That did a lot of good...

  7. So it acutally could be the pump eh, I was thinking that as well, and I have already done the lifters TWICE I guess a third time isn't nessary:D

  8. Bringing this back for some more input. I fired up the car last night after sitting for a day and the noise was not there, I was dumbfounded because it was making alot of noise when I parked it.

I didn't let it get fully warmed up though, just kinda shook my head and walked away. I have a bad trans pan leak I have to fix as well, will get back on it tonight after work.
