It looks like the term 'Barn Find' is getting deluted lately. (deluted.....another word I hate and i just used it!) Been reading lots of barn find posts and just for grins searched for barn find on ebay and got a whole***** load of stuff. One says its been stored in a barn for the last 8 years. Hell I've got a mid engine corvair that has been in my 'barn' for 20+. Maybe if i advertise it as a Barn Find it will be worth 5 times as much. And now Barn Find is on the cover of Hot Rod magazine. The term 'barn find' sometimes means 'stolen from someone's barn', or 'should have been in a barn but has been out in the weather for the last 50 years', or needs to stay in the barn. Being the victim of barn stealers in the past I have a certain disrespect for barn finders. Kind of sounds like Bar Fly doesnt it? Any body else have any opinions on the subject?
I feel your pain. The whole barn find tag line drives me freakin nuts. The only thing I've ever found in a barn was bird***** and owl vomit. Hell most of my junk looks like it needs to go back in the barn, but I would have to find a barn .
I sold a '32 sedan to a fellow Hamber and I kinda thought he must be getting tired of that phrase too. He posted it as a "pole barn find" because of it being in my pole barn shop.
i believe the term "barn find" is way overused. i know a guy who found a studebaker champion in a barn located on some land that he purchased. that's a genuine barn find. i spoke to a fellow who was selling a 48 cadillac that his father had in storage. he had some trouble making a sale so he advertised it as a "barn find" and the calls never stopped. it seems like it's becoming more of a marketing strategy than anyhting else. it can't be a "find" if it was never lost!
I was just beginning to think, "Man there must be a hell of alot of barns in (everywhere but Jersey), cuz I ain't never seen no barns with cars in em around here. Hell, come to think of it, I ain't never seen no barn neither." We here in Jersey have what we call "crack house finds" or "I got shot but look what I found finds." Glad I'm finally set straight. Thanks.
a guy down the road from me who builds rods had a nova wagon for sale that said on the sign garage kept. i passed by it everyday for 2 years and it was parked outside next to the garage !
We have crack house finds in nebraska too!! You find something really cool in an old crack house and come out with 6 different STD's, 12 needles stuck in random parts of your body and the back half of a 3 window coupe. We also have cornfield finds which are a little safer. But actually me and my dad have an old farm sted we are getting things off of, a guy got it when his parents died and wants rid of everything, there's a ton of old cars, tools, tractors, and just about everything else you can think of. I don't think they ever got rid of anything, just parked in the field or under a tree, or in the "barn".
I found and bought a killer 68 Torino (call the traditional police on me if you want) in a real barn just a coupl of days ago. I find cars in legitimate barns with some regularity. I think it helps if you live in or near a rural area where there are actually barns. I can't believe the term barn find bothers you. As for me, I love barns and their contents.
I've been a car guy my whole life and it seems like everyone has gotten super image concious all the sudden.
I'm guilty of the term myself. I recently discovered a 30/31 model A coupe in an old shed in rural louisiana. Was sitting on a piece of property belonging to an elderly woman that died 2 years ago. Got in touch with the current property owner about a possible sale, only to be shot down. The coupe has a license plate dating 1973. I blame the over use of this term for making its way into my vocabulary! I changed my mind,..I'm innocent.
Yes over-use and abuse of the term "Barn-find", is definitely getting out of hand! it's turning into some kinda buzz word! next thing you know, there's going to be a thread devoted to the subject! What's next? I hope people don't catch on to the term "ratrod" I can forsee it getting really outta control! LOL
I think "deluded" also applies these days with the mis-use of the term barn find. it is the new "old school" for the trendy crowd
looking into things too much is a disease ya know? it's called searching for a problem. why care? what does it bother you? I bet if you found a car, in a barn, you would call it a barn find.
i could care less about the fact that anycar is a "barn find" unless it pertains to a historical car .and the fact that the price doubles if someone say's its a barn find. i say big deal most are projects are finds of some sort just not all are in a fricking barn it's just like the word "patina" ya say those words and people come running "barnfind" is just aother one of those words
I know there is no shortage of posts with people complaining about people using the phrase "barn find".
Corvairs*****. I know a yard with 20+ corvairs. When will people crush the corvairs and stop crushing the good*****?
I haven't found anything interesting in a barn. My barn just has hay and some old tires in it. But the term barn find seems to be poppin up way too much
maybe the term "barn find" is getting over used. But its still great to dream that we will one day come across the car we have wanted for years in some shed or barn - where it is carefully stored just waiting for us to discover it. Oh wait, I just woke up....oh well, it is still fun to dream.
I had been lookin for about 6 years for a 32 Ford said to be in a garage in my neighborhood. Found it 2 weeks ago, 3 blocks from my house. Chopped 5 W, flathead with a nice body, complete car parked in the 60s. Still dealing with owner...............OLDBEET
"Diluted" ????? Oh man! It took me five years to get the "Like" thing down. How am I suppose to use this??
old beet - tell us the whole story. This sounds like a good one. glad to hear you found the car. Come on, details, details!
