http://www.pbs.org/opb/historydetectives/video/nextweek.html

<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="mainContent" -->'32 ford roadster

AIRING: Season 5, Episode 9
THE DETECTIVE: Tukufu Zuberi
THE PLACE: California

THE CASE:

A man in Benicia, CA owns a 1932 Ford roadster that, upon purchase, had an engine too powerful for normal driving. Our contributor suspects his car was used for dry-lake racing, a sport that had its heyday in Southern California in the 1930’s, and 1940s.
In 1932, although America was in the midst of the Depression, Henry Ford forged ahead, designing a new model ’32 car with the first powerful V8 engine affordable to the m***es. Was our contributor’s car a**** the popular hot rods raced out at the dry lakes?
History Detectives high-tails it to California to investigate one of the most iconic hot rods of all time.

Holy **** I'll have to tape it to see what steps they take. I'd give anything if I could track down the previous owner/s of my roadster. I love the show too. FWIW Maybe thats why we like these old hotrods.

someone has to know the guy in the preview, i am figuring it is just a hotrod, just because they claim some big engine, it hadd ot run at the salt? , all kinds of engines and car combinations are proving that this week, so it will be interesting to see what is or isn't,

that was cool , but my dog knows more about cars then that dumb ***.
he new it had more then 7 cylinder`s? and slots in the hood?

12. yeah, but i bet he knows more about quaker furniture from the turn of the century than your dumb***

:D

13. It was 100% positive. No reference to "outlaw" hot rodders or the like. Not very deep. But intresting to the wide range of people who watch the show and do not have a hot rodding background. And the car was a primo example.

I don't mind someone that knows nothing, as long as they admit it.... he did.

Short, but sweet. It's always a treat to see how non hot rodders react when they begin to learn about hot rods. Even though he was only featured in a short bit, Winfield is a cl*** act!

I'll keep an eye out for the repeat. Good to see a few PBS fans out there. Did anyone make a donation?

The followup to the story had one glitch in it - they didn't research their modern history very well. The guy said that Thrust SSC was driven by Richard Noble when it went supersonic. Of course - he merely owned the racer - Andy Green drove it through the barrier.

Wonder if the "researcher" had an inkling he was in the presence of hotrodding gods?

I heard somewhere that Chevrolet originally developed the V8 engine and sold it to Mr. Ford.

Uh, I think they did have a car guy on that, actually 2: Winfield and Tardel, they don't get much more "car guy" than that.

As far as it went, the show was pretty accurate and the researcher was obviously having a great time in the foreign-to-him old car world.
If anybody on there was a goof I'd have to go with the car owner, he's got one but he don't know one.
The best thing is it was a good information piece that didn't get crazy with the "value" end of the old car hobby.
I give them a solid "A" for effort and coolness factor without hype.

Our PBS in N.C. has been leaning towards the right ever since Bush was elected, so this show was a welcome change over the usual stuff they got. I love it when Gene Winfield is on TV. I liked the show.:D

27. I was just having fun. I like the show because they cover a lot of really interesting and diverse topics without any drama. We were going to have one of them come to the museum where I work to investigate a playbill that is supposed to have Lincoln's blood on it, but it never panned out. I like that he didn't know anything about cars and he had to go and find out, that's what makes it fun. It could have been longer, they crammed a lot of info into a short segment.

I did think the owner of the car was funny, he had to take that merc motor out because it was "too fast" :)

If they air it again I'll record it at work (tv station) and try to get it up on YouTube. I watched it last night, but wasn't able to record it :(

I think the guy that did the research did a great job not knowing anything about hot rods,,,, past or present.

The program showed a lotta cl*** and a couple of icons in the form of Winfield and Tardel.

NO drama at all,,just pure intertainment,,,and maybe the normal PBS viewers may have a different prespective on the history and the love affair with the old cars,,,, HRP
