    Just curious......

I was running kind of hog wild with buying hot rod parts for a while, but we just had a baby, and my wife decided to stop working for a year or so.

We duked it out tonight and settled on $300 a month. I guess that's ok for now, on a 1 income household.

What's your budget? Or do you just wing it?

I try not to think about such existential matters.

Mine usually goes in seasonal lumps. Tax return is always nice for buying alot at one time. Then try to save up for swap meets when they come around. 300 a month seems pretty good. As long as you have a roof, food, and lights I'd say your doing good.

I was just wondering this. I was reading a post where someone mentioned sending money for a part and never got the part. I've read that several times on the HAMB. I was starting to wonder if I was the only person who usually picks up one significant part per month. If I ordered something and never got it that would be a huge problem for me.

So anyways, I try to do between 150$ - 300$. If I do 300$ it's every extra cent I have for that month. That means shopping thrifty and no eating out.

Whatever I sell on ebay stays in paypal, then spend from there.

That all depends on how much you make and what yer bills come up to. I make more now than when I started building my roadster in 98 but my bills are higher too. I still eat canned soup and ravioli for lunch though so I can buy the **** that I don't need for my projects. Ya gotta have priorities... mine just happen to have "hotrod stuff" listed damn close to the top.

Like a lot of rodders, I buy, fix, sell and re-invest the proceeds to feed my disease. I also sell quite a bit on Ebay. I occasionally use my hobby account to buy things for the family. That helps keep my spouse supportive. This activity cuts into my hobby time but I enjoy it and I get to own a lot of different cars if even for a short time.

take that $300 and invest in some vintage parts and resell them, you'll double your money if you buy the right stuff.

bought a 27 roadster completely unrestorable for $100 and parted it out to the tune of $1700.

I'm single and run my own business. I try to limit myself to $1000 a month, maybe a little more or less depending on the type of month the business is experiencing. If I can find something I can make money on reselling it, the profit goes into the budget.

Never had a budget, just sold or s****ped stuff to cover what ever came up. Kids college bills have really slowed progress on the car projects.

    Holly ****!!!!

    I dunno.

I spend sporadically, I usually try to save up if I can't find something that month but between 150-300 sounds about right. The buying and reselling on ebay ****s here as almost everyone that has something I want will only ship UPS. Kinda ****s when they expect you to pay more in freight than the part is worth (shipping to Alaska ****s, but that's a whole nother rant).

Depends what I need, If I am close to finishing something the sky is the limit! I admit I need help, I am like an addict. 300 plus I guess. Oh yeah never tell your wife what you actually spend on your hobby. never. Trust me she doesn't tell you.

Dont really have a 'monthly budget' but I do have a 'fund....Over the years I've tried to make this habit self sustaining through buying and selling and occasionally performing small fabrication jobs for people when the 'fund' grows low.

I maintain a stack of cash at home for spur of the moment finds and a paypal balance. When those two get low I know its time to sell or do some side work.

I also keep an excel spreadsheet of my buying and selling so that I know where the money goes. Sounds like a lot of work but if you stay ontop of it, it doesn't take any time at all.

I do all this so that i dont feel like I'm "stealing" money from the family funds for myself. So far it has balanced out pretty well! (at least thats what I tell my wife)

So....one month it may be $50 and the next it could be $2000, just depends on whats in the fund.

  23. No monthly budget for me. I have my own business, sometimes I make $0 and sometimes I have 10 grand to put into a project.
I wish I had a steady $400 a month for Hot Rod related stuff, like some of you.

  24. negative. really negative.

  25. August $0, My birthday is 9/1, so plates, and insurance is due, also my GF birthday is 8/28.

February $1000 - Income tax refund!

The rest of the time between $100 and $300 depending on what I can sell on ebay. but this is my tool budget too.

I've started taking my lunch to work, and it saves a bunch over going out.

Depends on what extra I have in my account. We were separated for about 1 1/2 years in the early '90's. When we got back together, we decided to keep our own checking accounts. She pays for food and her smoking habit, I pay everything else. We did this while she was working, then I picked up everything for 6 months when she became disabled, until disability kicked in.

Several years ago, I was dropping a 350 in my '68 Chevy truck and decided the 2 bbl wasn't going on it. I told her I'd be right back and headed down to the local O'Reilly's. When I got back a few minutes later with the new Edlebrock intake, carb, and air cleaner, she helped me carry it all in. She was quick...

Her: "This probably cost as much as our car payment".

Me: "Closer to our house payment".

Never heard another word about it.

I always buy used and buy as little aftermarket parts as possible.
money is not important as long as its a good buy.

I guess like alot of us, if we look at how much we actually spend on our disease, it'll make your upper lip quiver.
$300. per month I feel is VERY realistic while running a household and as the main breadwinner. Of course within the last month of build time and when spring is just around the corner, out comes the plastic. Which isn't all bad when used within reason.
I am at the verge where it is ALMOST a self supportive hobby by buying/selling parts. I never thought that I would reach that point but hey you gotta win every once in a while.

    varies a lot.....but i'd say an average of $200-300......

my problem is, i don't sell anything.....since the HAMB i'll weed through things when i really need to stir up some $$ for other parts........but i'm bad about sticking back.........i plan on being in this business a looong time and why would i seel 32 pedals or 39's when i know i might use them.......

i'll admit it, though, i really have a problem.....i would spend and spend on swap meets and ole' guys that have stuff to sell
