Definitely '64 or '65. The '64 was the VERY FIRST pony car, out 6 months [or more] BEFORE the Mustang. '66 is more squared, with the nose slanted forward and different taillights. '67-'69 are completely different.

    64 - 65.

A friend of mine bought a new 65 with the 273 4 brl, and then he got sent to Ft. Ord (CA) for six months without his wheels. Me and another friend took his Barracuda out to him when he got out of the service and then we all drove it back home (MD). It was a nice running car, not terribly fast nor not much of a twisty road car, but still decent. I like it so much I later got a 69 Cuda Formula S fastback with a 4 speed and a 383. Later swapped out the 383 for a hemi. Loved that car, but the gas embargo brought our relationship to a halt. Haven't seen it since, and probably just as well. Can't have what I can't find.:D

I think those (perfect) back windows and the seats are worth a small ransom to certain folks... hmmm... might have to dig deeper. I could probably build one good one, and part the rest.

    Thanks for the info boys!

C'mon, how can a 64 Barracuda be the first PONY-car when the term wasn't even in use until 6 months after they were introduced? The first FISH-car maybe.
Seriously, the early Barracudas were great machines but not in the long-nose/short deck world of Mustangs, Camaros.
They did have the largest rear window ever used to that time, perhaps even to today, I believe it was 24.5 or something square feet of curved glass.

the world would have been so different had the lone 'cuda won the '64/65 Trans Am Sedan series instead of a Muscrat...maybe mopar would have sunk some more money in developement of the little car.

  16. Look on Ebay for "Mopar manual steering box." I found mine there, I'm using it for the cowl steering in my roadster. I think they ran from about '62 thru the mid 70s.

  18. Had no idea there was so much interest for these on the HAMB. I've owned a 65 since 1985.

Those are probably 65s. 64 automatics used the old push button shift. The 65 automatics use a floor shifter. However the transmissions for both years are the same because they are both cable actuated.
64s have a chrome script "Valiant" on the right side of the rear just above the bumper and below the trunk lid.

Still holds the record for the largest piece of glass in a regular production car. Rear glass is still available NOS. They ran off a lot of them evidently.

In my experience good used ones go for around $100 to $125. There seems to be adequate supply and they are so big that storage is a hassle so people really seem motivated when they sell.

Look for rust in the lower quarters especially the right side and wheel well. The front floors because the cowl drain gets clogged with crap and the water backs up and comes in through the fresh air vents soaking the rugs. Check inside the cowl as well. Hard to clean because the cowling grate does not come off. You have to access it from the side at the A-pillar behind the fender.

If you buy make sure you upgrade the brakes especially if you get the 9" drums. They are way too small and scary.

  19. Looks like 65's from here. Dad had a 6cyl 4-speed car in 65. Fun car.

Stop!! You're giving me nightmares - shades of times long ago and far far away. The one looks to be a '65, don't know for sure about the other one. My baby brother bought a '65 when he came home from Germany in '68, and he is not a wrencher, so anytime something went wrong with it, he called on me; I think I hated working on it more because there were other things I'd rather have been doing, rather than the fact that it was a bad car, but I sure did cringe whenever he'd call and ask if I could help.

Both are 65s with round backup lights. The 64 & 66 had square ones - if my memory serves me right (which isn't too good nowadays...

But that is the 65 grill, not the 64. Also, not all 64's had the push button automatic. It was possible to get an automatic on the column.

  28. Grill work is the same for 64 and 65 Barracudas. Barracuda grillwork is different than Valiant grill work.

I have never seen an automatic column shift in a 64 or 64 'Cuda. You could get a 3 speed manual column shift though. Definitely could get an automatic column shift in '66. No more push button shifts after 1965 AFAIK.

The styling still has some of the of Virgil Exner ideas such as the look of the headlight bulges. I'd like to see a decent custom done with one. I've seen a few bad ones

I also had a 65 273 4V 4 speed. I loved that car and used to drag it in Oxford, ME. These are 64 1/2 or 65's. The 66 had a different grill and tail lights. I would love to have another one like my first one.

I've had a few of these cars and currently own a 65 Valiant convertible and 2 door sedan. Based on the front fenders and round backup lights those are both 65's. 64 would have square backup and the body line on the front fender would drop down lower. Other than that the bodiy work is the same for 65/64. 64 was the last year for pushbutton shift for all Mopars. 65 still had a cable shift trans but had a different detent for the park position.

BTW: You can't even give the back glass away. They never break.
