Ya betcha X2. This is going to be one of my more challenging scene, it may not get filmed until spring... but who knows? I would like to have as many cars as I can. 75 to 150 would be great, if we can find that many local cars that look close to 1955 or earlier period OK (and are willing to come spend the day at the shoot). Any help in gathering these cars would be much appreciated. Know anyone with such a car? Send them my way :D .

DOES ANYONE HAVE A SO CAL CAR CLUB LIST? Might be a good way for me to get cars, if I could call all the local clubs and have them participate.

We have not yet found the location where the scene will be filmed. Once it has been secured, we will set a date. There is more than likely going to be fairly big fees to rent any private airstrip, even a shut down, old one. I will need to figure out a way to have such funds saved over the next months. So I'm ready when we do find the location...

    UPDATES:

Last night I watched one last time the award winning film "Fried Green Tomatoes". I have been studying it because it is a good exemple of current footage mixed in with flashback footage. Yesterday I analyzed the entire film, creating a "blue print" of it, including the length of each scene, number of scenes, overall length of movie, length of each flashback section and length of each contemporary section. I also looked closely at transitions and concluded the director has a foot fetish :D because he used feet to transit from scene to scene, no less than 5 times... Next time you watch this film, pay attention to this ;) Anywhoo my analysis process took 3 hours, the film being 2:10 hours long.

Today I did work on the website all day, updating graphics on secondary pages, etc... check it out!

    PHOTOS:

Filming cars that zip by at over 250 mph can be challenging, but I did OK with this one.

I liked how the motorcycle was reflecting on the ground because of the heat so I filmed it.

Fighting side wind and great distance, which forced me to be zoomed all the way - hard to not be shaky when you do a super quick pan with fully zoomed in camera... but I did manage to capture a few good ones, including parachutes opening up... If only I could have gotten closer to the cars, but the SCTA keeps it very safe by blocking off a very wide area of the dry lake for drivers... Noone can get in. So I had to content myself with watching / filming from a FAR distance and try to do the best I could.

Strong winds keep this chute open even though the roadster is at a dead stop.

After completing his run, a driver struggles to get out of his rig and then to take his gear off.

That's it for today, more tomorrow! :D

Well, wed I installed my fuel pressure guage on my fuel log. Battled with it for a while, just could not get the fitting off no matter how hard I tried. Luckily I have a very cool neighbour hotrodder who is very knowledgeable and a GREAT teacher (and strong). So I took my fuel log down to him and he walked me through the tricky parts, like not tightening too much to not crack the fuel log etc... properly applying plummer's tape, etc... I learned a lot and was happy because I was able to put everything back and it worked good, no leaks etc. pressure currently at 4psi with old pump still on car. Gives me something to shoot for when I install my new Hollie pump & regulator next week.

Yesterday I put the roadster on jacks and spent a good 2 hours under it, looking at fuel lines, replacing a cracked rubber short section. Mostly I have hard line but a few short sections connecting hard line are rubber. It was tricky to remove, because there was no where to go. But after battling for a while I was able to get it off and put a brand new one in and I did not even take a gasoline shower in the process hehe. I was smart enough to avoid that. Since I am going to cruise all week-end for my B-Day, I decided to run by Pep boys and get a back up pump of same spec as one I currently have on. This will get me by if mine dies. I fixed the patch we did last week on my existing fuel pump's wiring and made a quick disconnect connection so I can remove that pump and put my spare one in a jiffy. i took the time to solder it and shrink wrap it too. My first attempt at soldering was challenging because I did it upside down under the car next to fuel lines. It took a few tries (the first ones were disasters and melting led kept dripping, missing my hand by a hair!) . So I stopped, and got up and practiced on a fake wire / connection to figure out what I was doing wrong. I quickly figured it out, made a beautiful practice connection and then returned under the car and did the same thing, upside down this time, with no problems.

then I fired up the DOS hoping it would not EXPLODE :D haha! but it seems to be fine and dandy, so it looks like i am good to go for tomorrow' long cruise. :) I checked one last time for leaks but found none.

I really enjoyed the time spent with my hotrod one on one, just the two of us in the garage. The more I fix, the more we bond. It always amazes me though just how the most simple project turns into a time consumming struggle. That's what happens when you:

    1- have a 32 roadster
2- are a complete rookie and
    3- a woman.

Stuff that takes you guys two seconds to unscrew take me 10 min because of my lack of strength  . So everything takes FOREVER. but I'm stubborn so the more I struggle the more I am determined to get it done :D . I must admit that this is one time I really hate being a girl, but then again, beats the heck out of having a hairy belly :D .

Well that's the updates for my unglamourous hotrod fuel pump repairs...

    UPDATES:

Now done with my analysis of "Fried Green Tomatoes" I moved on to my next victim: "World's Fastest Indian". I had heard of the movie but never seen until last night. Ironically it also has a runtime of 2:10 hours, just like FGT. Seems I could easily have a 2:30 run time without feeling too adventurous. 3:00 might be pushing it and anything beyond that could very well be suicide  ...

I thought the movie was touching, charming and I really enjoyed it. It was a bit slow, but I do like slow paced movie, so I was OK with that. My film is going to be slow paced as well.

I was quite distraught though when I watched the opening scene because it had slight similarities with mine. I had never seen the film until last night so how was I to know? I am not sure I should worry about it since the similarities are only slight but worry people might think I copied ? ... And one can say a lot of things about me, but "copycat" is not one of them.

So I don't know... I really like my opening scene and not really willing to give it up... maybe I worry too much

Next week I will create a blue print of the movie to see scene numbers and length and study transitions, camera angles etc...

    PHOTOS

Since I shared with you my fixing my roadster last night, I thougth I'd post a few shots relating to that, from our El Mirage photoshoot. This is pretty much what things looked like yesterday in my garage, minus the high heels that is ;) and the dust.

caption: sheesh, it is fixed yet? :)

OK, I'm diving in! everytime I have to work on the hotrod and I feel I am in way over my head I just tell myself: "well how hard can it be?" and that gives me the courage to dive in.

That's it for this week folks! I'll be taking a well deserved break from film work and cruising all week-end to celebrate my B-Day! Hopefully i will not break down. :D See you all Monday.

    UPDATES

This week-end I celebrated not only my Birthday but also my one year anniversary with the DOS. We've been together a whole year and we are still honeymooners! I took a well deserved break from film work to take the time to cruise. I litterally drove the wheels off of my deuce. Started in Woodland Hills, took the old 118 back road to Ventura where I visited HAMBer Travis. His shop ruled so hard I am now planning to film a scene in it. It pretty much looked like a 40's or 50's shop, with flatheads everywhere, an old 40's bicycle, some old long board surf boards... Even the building looks old. It's going to look great :D I then left ventura and cruised up to Ojai then back down to Carpeneria and Santa Barbara. On sunday I went up to lake Cachuma, then Santa Ynes then to Solveng then Buelton and then Lompoc and back down to Woodland Hills area. The ol' jalopy was purring the whole way up and back for two days straight. Got stuck in very very heavy traffic sunday afternoon in Santa Barbara. engine temps suddenly jumped to above 190 and for a moment there I thought the old 32 radiator was going to explode, but since I check my temp guage every 10 min or so I must have caught it right away. I pulled over to the side of freeway and immediately figured out the problem. Dead fan switch (made in China). So I bypassed it, cut the end of power wire, put a male there and then hooked it up to fan wire male, a bit of electrical tape around this and I was right back on the road. I used my power cutoff switch to shut the fan off when I stopped along the way. I actually really enjoy breaking down when I can figure out a way to fix it myself :D. The fuel pump worked A-OK and my fuel line previous repairs held up just fine. All in all a great week-end with awesome views.

Back home I checked on a recent casting call I did for the film and found that over 400 actors had submitted to be in the film over the week-end    . 400??? yep, no kidding.

Wow. Some of these kids will looks great as 50's hotrodders. I want to rely mostly on my swing dancing friends but will need additional people as extras and for small parts so the casting call was very very helpful. I knew there are a lot of hungry actors in LA, I just didn't know there were THAT MANY. I got many emails from male actors wanting in badly, all said they thought the website was great and that they were extremely interested in the project. So far so good.

    PHOTOS

    A few photos today:

Let's us return to El Mirage dry lake and see a few more shots of cars that are now done racing:

This roadster had a good run and is now being pushed back to the pits:

This is my friend Paula Burns, who just broke the speed record in her class last meet. She pulls her 29 roadster behind a rolling BAR (no kidding). That green bar is something to check out. It has a bar counter and seats on three sides and can seat probably up to 15 people. At night it is all lit up and blasts music and is filled with people drinking (no, no alcohool) and having a grand time and the bar zips on the dry lake... It is the weirdest thing you have ever seen! And YES it is going to be in my film (of course, I just couldn't pass on something like this! :D )

Can't remember if I already posted this photo: This is a gorgeous belly tanker. Somehow I managed to film the perfect footage. Once in a great great while you capture one shot with a pan and zoom that comes out flawless. Of all my footage, that shot remains the best, I just could not find one thing wrong with it no matter how hard I looked. So it is going to make the film FOR SURE.

Last photo for today: Johnny Callaway (center) is driving the coupe he's been building for his best friend Art. Here he is, driving down the dry lake bed with two other hotrods on his flanks.

That's it for now kids, I'll catch up with you in a couple days.

If the movie is anything like your HAMB preview, it's going to be a smash hit. About the opening scenes vs WFI, I'd leave yours alone. Folks probably won't even notice it. Anyway, I'd love to have a movie poster and I need your mailing address or something to send my donation to. I'd like to send you a MO, don't use the paypal anymore. Thanks and keep up the good work! Oh yeah, keep that shine on the high heels they go great with the salt, sand, and hot rods with beautiful HAMBsters sitting on them.;) :D

WOW!! Am I enjoying the crap out of this thread or what? What a project, I wish you well in your endeavor. Your birthday cruise brought back a lot of memories of some of the places I would take my ’29 (stocker) in the early ‘60s. Oh, BTW, happy birthday and a contribution is on the way.;) <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = /><o:p></o:p>

    UPDATES

To answer above post from Aman, yes, I forgot to mention if any of you guys feel particularly generous today ;) you can help me raise the money I need to rent the airstrip for the Saugus scenes. A few hambers and some of my local friends already have and I now have about 20% of what I need. I remain hopeful that the owner will be sympathetic to the project and only ask for a smaller fee. I also remain hopeful I will be able to raise the funds. I must have FAITH (pun intended!) :D

The easier and faster way to make a contribution is to log on to the website and click on "make a contribution" and use the paypal donation button. Yes you can use a credit card with paypal.

    http://www.deuceofspadesmovie.com

All people who contribute, regardless of amount, will have their name appear in the credit roll at the end of the film :D :That's my way of saying THANK YOU.

OK, so AMAN you asked about mailing a contribution, sure you can do that here is the address to send it to:

    DEUCE OF SPADES
    Faith Jackie Granger
    P.O Box 123
    23705 Vanowen street
    West Hills, Ca 91307

Make MO orders payable to Jackie Granger (faith is my nick name).

PLEASE MAKE SURE TO INCLUDE YOUR FULL NAME so I can add it to the film credits.

I have been sending a special graphic to each person who donates, to say THANK YOU. This is a small size digital poster you can use as desktop background or print and enjoy in your garage or wherever. The general public will not get to see it or have it.

I know all of us hotrodders are always hurting for money cause our cars are bleeding us dry  so small donations are OK, even a small $5 donation would help if quite a few people send it. If you can do more, hey, that's awesome. Know that it will be used wisely.

I intend to go visit the owner of the airstrip I want to rent in the next month or so. The guy is in jail, so I will have to go there to talk to him and get his permission (fun, fun, fun ) . I think that if he sees the photo of Johnny in the slammer (Johnny spent almost 3 years in Lincoln Heights) he might feel a special connection with the project. I would like to be able to make him a financial offer when I meet him. the airstrip is currently shut down and abandonned. It looks a lot like Saugus and remains - to date - my best bet / prospect especially since he manager of the property is a friend of my friend Pete so she would probably be very lenient with us. ;) I do, however still need to get written permission from the legal owner of the property, hence the funds needed to make him an offer and pay him.

Note that Ryan has approved posting a request for financial contribution for this movie on his forum, the HAMB.

The HAMB will also be featured in one or two scenes in the film :). How cool is that? :)

Yeah, well... My buddy Joel is apparently unaware that I did over 50 burn outs at the Memorial Day Parade on Sherman Way Blvd in Canoga Park this year. I ended up on TV doing a burn out (yes the event was televised). My friend John called me up the next day and he goes:

"I was in Santa Barbara yesterday and saw you on TV doing a burn out"

    I was like   :p ;) :D:D :D

    It was cool.

Now you can imagine I did not like Joel's little comment: "Oh Faith doesn't do burnouts, she's scared". So I had to do one leaving your parking lot :D . To his defense he only said that because I have never done a burnout while he has been my passenger. So I think he really thinks I don't do them. When in fact I have been doing burnouts for a year now, about 2 to 6 each time I drive my car which is about 3 to 4 times a week, so you make the math. Due to the fact that I now have taller bias plys tires and went up from 15" to 16" wheels in the rear, I since have lost my ability to burn out and fishtail instantly by just giving gas (boohoohoo). I now have to use brakes as well (RATS). But I think that once I hook up my tri-power back up so I have 3 double barrel instead of just one, I may be able to fishtail again and burn out to my heart's content.

Well, anyways, glad you liked the burnout, I know I did and it sure shut Joel up. :D

    TODAY'S DEUCE OF SPADES PHOTOS

Today I thought I would share a few more photos from flashbacks or casting meets, and maybe a few stories about JC as well:

Robert Ressler has been cast as ART DELANEY, Johnny's best friend.

Please note that, due to the inherent flaky nature of most actors, last minute casting changes are possible and to be expected. Therefore, and until all the footage has been filmed / completed, I may be forced to change some of the line up and you might notice some changes (different actors / faces etc...). Hopefully I will not have to  .

now back to the story: Johnny and Art are like brothers, Art being like the little brother that Johnny never had. As you know, he even helped him build a rad coupe. He also has been teaching him the ropes by letting him hang out and work at the Callaway's speed shop. The Callaway's speed shop was owned and run by Johnny's father (James Callaway). James was a hotrodder of course and started teaching Johnny about hotrods since Johnny was a little boy. James was also a pilot and went down over the Mariannas during WWII. At age 16, Johnny quit school and ever since, ran his father's speed shop, stepping up to the plate and becoming the "man of the house" so to provide for his mother, Jeanne Callaway.

ART (Robert Ressler - photo taken during a casting meet - not from actual film)

Love what your doing, making a movie on the cheap. I did notice one thing on the latest photo of Jeanne, is that she is not wearing a wedding ring. If her husband had been killed during WWII and she remained single, I'm sure she would have continued to wear her ring ( provided she had one in the first place), as a rememberance of her late husband. Just IMHO. Continue your outstanding work. The fruits of your labor in this project will not go un-noticed. It's also great to see all the HAMB members who are able and willing to offer any assistance possible.

Well, this photo would have been taken about 14 years after his death. At some point, one has to move on ;) . She did not remarry but it is not known whether she did have any prospects. Any new man in her life would not have been too thrilled about her still wearing a wedding ring from a past man, I am sure... So I think her not wearing the ring actually does make sense. Although I could be wrong...

    UPDATES

Lots of updates and good news today!

1- A film industry pro (he is a younger car collector, whom I have met at Bob's Big Boy and who happens to have been first assistant Director for more major motion pictures that I can mention) has taken a liking to my project. He has offered his help and support and may be stepping in in the capacity of co-producer to help me in my production stages. I sure could use the help :) . We had a great meeting Wednesday night. I cannot devulge all the details but suffice to say that he is brutally honest and read the script and critiqued it. I was bracing myself for impact, figuring he would tear it apart. Although he did point out of few things that needed work (which I had already noticed and had already started fixing) his overall comment was: This script reads like a major motion picture. It is very visual, touching and good.

    :D I was pleased :D

2- The major common concern being the LENGTH of this epic, I spent the last 4 days working around the clock going over every scene, every dialog, every word, and took a chain saw and started chopping away scenes that were not absolutely necessary to move the story forward. Writing the script was easy. Letting go of some of my scenes wasn't. Finally I had to just hit the delete button and not look back. :( ... It was painful, but liberating

I then did a little research and found that the following dramas all were over 2hrs:10 min in length:

    the Aviator - 2hrs:50 min
    Memoirs of a Geisha - 2hrs:25 min
Broke Back Mountain - 2hrs:14 min
    The departed = 2hrs:31 min
    The Gardian = 2hrs:20 min
The Shawshank redemption = 2hrs:22 min
Pride and Prejudice: 5hrs:10  (can you believe it????)
    Braveheart = 3hrs:00

    :D

I then went back to my script and timed every single scene and did a runtime total. After deletion of many scenes I was able to get from a 210 min movie down to a 145 min movie. :D

And the first 1955 flashback will kick in within the first 15 min of the film :D :D . The other good news is that all the scenes I canned were 2007 scenes and I did not have to touch or lose any of my flashback scenes (I have 30 of them). Did I end up canning the non essential Paso Robles car show scene? Or the LACR dragstrip scene? Or even the El MIrage time trial 2007 scene? NO. I saved them and they are going to make the cut. :D Cause that's what hotrodding is about.

3- Last but not least, it looks like the Automobile Driving Museum just got a 1951 Packard Poilice car in :D :D. the engine is blown but it looks like I will be able to use it for stationary shots... I am in heaven!

4- I started receiving a few donations, it is giving me hope that maybe we will be able to get the airstrip. I have about 20&#37; of what I need to make the owner an offer. :) Please keep them coming, we need to raise quite a bit more to reach our goal.

I have been so busy I have not had a chance to replace my fan switch yet, but still driving the car around quite a bit. Will fix it today though. Yesterday had a meeting with an actor at Flames (our local car meet) and I did about 20 burnouts on the way back home. Don't know why but it seems my bias plys tires are now willing to cooperate. Go figure. Maybe it's that big burnout I did in front of Travis' shop Saturday :D that loosened them up some.(just kidding) - OK folks that's it for today.

I am honored to have many of our top local lindy hop dancers in the film, especialy Debbie Carter (supporting actress) who is one of the only contemporary women to be inducted in the hall of Fame of swing. I will try to post some photos of Debbie Monday.

You guys have a great week-end!

  24. Wow. I know you weren't alive in the fifties in LA, but looking at the pic of Tommy Miller made me ask you, have you ever heard of Howdy Doody?

    UPDATES:

Spent all week-end working on the script and by the end of saturday it was looking pretty tight. I also created a blue print of the film, listing each scene, scene length and what actors were in the scene. This allowed me to figure out how many days I will need who and how many total scenes each actor has ... Today I finalized a few more details and printed final copies of script. :D

I was able to calculate the exact amount of flashback within the film itself. I am proud to say that while watching the film, the audience will be spending no less than 61 minutes in 1955. Wow. if I pull this off I will need a medal :D .

Today I secured a late 30's running fire truck :). yeah, I know, a 50's fire truck would have been better, but beggars can't be choosers. This one is in mint condition too! I now have for my crash scene one running fully equipped ambulance, one fire truck and two police cars. Damn I'm good :p. You guys can imagine just how hard it is to find such items for free. I am overwhelmed with the support I have been getting in helping pull off this huge undertaking. I may also have access to a vintage gas station to film at, as well as a large property with orange groves and several 1930 / 1940 buildings down in San Diego.

All in all, a good week in filmmaking land :D.

    PHOTOS:

Today I have a photo of Debbie and Shon Carter at the US opens. They won first place US champions in 2002.

That's it for today. Yesterday I finally got around to repairing my fan switch. I went into pepboys and came out with the switch and installed it right there and then in front of the store, cut, spliced, crimped etc.. rewired and i was back on the road in less than 10 min. I was amazed at just how freaking easy it was. Last time I did it, 10 months ago, I struggled with this simple repair. It's like they say: Practice makes perfect :D.

    UPDATES:

Special thanks to Robert and Ana Klyver for donating several sets of vintage plates ranging from 1942 to 1956, including one plate from 1951 which will end up on the back of the DOS :D . I was very excited to open the box and discover the many treasures it carried in its womb.

Had an interesting dinner last night with a group of fascinating old timers. Including Ray Campi, a veteran rockabilly artist that has been performing since the late 40's :D, and still does to this day. He's got to be the youngest looking 75 year old man I have ever seen. Also in the group was a music historian that has several books on the subject under his belt. Him and I discussed dance styles prior to 1955 and he confirm that it would be called SWING in deed (so, there!). I also met an attorney that collects rare stationary, he has some that date back from Marie Antoinette !! (no kidding). He saw the portfolio and made many compliments on the photos and then point blank went:

    "how much"?

I was like.. "how much "what?" "..

He goes: "How much do you need to make your film" basically he was offering to get investors. He was very confident that I would immediately accept so my polite "NO thank you I am not looking for investors" threw him off. "The film is not for sale" I explained. "I want it to remain pure, the last thing I need is a bunch of profit hungry businessmen telling me how the movie should be made so they can squeeze and extra buck out of it." I explained that this was a movie made by a hotrod girl, about hotrods, for hotrodders and the hotrod community: It's my contribution. And I'll be darn if I let Hollywood hijack it . My refusal earned his immediate respect :D . Maybe I'm idealistic, but that's how it is going to be.

Yesterday I also cruised Pasadena and found many gorgeous roads, including the one that goes under all the bridges, what a great shot! Pasadena remains my favorite town here in LA. On the way back I hopped on the freeway and zigzagged my way home  ahh the bias plys tires will surely keep you on your toes but I so love them... I have to accept their temperamental nature, sometimes I amgoing home and they decide to head to Las Vegas  , but I promptly remind them who's the BOSS :p . Teh DOS ran great and did many a burn out, so it's official my tires are now broken in and they sing again!

Well, that's it for today folks, see you all tomorrow!

    TODAY'S PHOTOS:

A few more beautiful shots from our 1955 SCTA start line scene filmed 4 weeks or so ago at El Mirage:

Here is Tim's 34 coupe, which took a first place at the Grand National Roadster Show 2007 in the Suede Palace.

parked behind the DOS (DOS = Deuce Of Spades by the way) is Tyrell's model A coupe. Tyrell is very young I think 18 or so and he built the coupe himself. It has a nice flatty in it etc... the young dude painting the numbers is Matt Winter who may end up playing Johnny Callaway's rival Toni Crosciato aka "Fresno"

Note the $4 mexican blanket that keeps my legs warm in winter and doubles as a car cover in the summer, cause the bench seat sure gets HOT in mere seconds once the roadster is parked under the HOT california sun. Blankets works great by the way, I highly recommend it and it sure is cheaper than a California $300 cover :D . Plus it fits the look :D .

Here are Tyrell's model A roadster again and Matt's 29 roadster, which may end up being used in the film as rival "fresno" (Toni Crosciato) fast car, which will challenge the DOS into a deadly race on September 4rth , 1955 at midnight. This is not confirmed yet but a good probability.

I hope you guys enjoyed the photos, see you again Thursday.

I like the idea of the "Fresno" car. And do you realize you got some encouraging words from Corky Coker...the man "hisself". That's pretty awesome! I can't wait to see the finished movie.

Looks like a hard endeavor is coming to light. Best of luck with everything. Contribution is on the way. Congratulations on what you've done so far!! I only wish my 55 Pontiac was in Cali instead of here in Florida.
