A friend of mine just showed me a car that has been in the woods behind his house for years. The body is actually not bad. I don't think I have ever seen one in person before. Are they rare?? Does anyone have any pics of one?? He said I could have it if I want, I just don't know if it is worth the effort. I would love to see one if anyone has pics.

flatbacks are rare for a chevy they did sell more in canada, all sheet metal is the same as a reg humpback except for the tailpan, there is no repo panel for a flatback chev
The flatback sedans have always been looked upon as rare cars and a goodie to find no matter whether 2door or 4door. People used to find those short taillamp stands and wonder what they were. We'd buy 'em cheap and sell 'em high in Hemmings or the larger swap meets.
I thought that the flat backs were called Town Sedans. Probably since they didnt have a trunk for luggage. There was a small compartment behind the back seat big enough for a jack and some tools.
I have a 37 chev flatback. currently under construction. The body is in good shape, some rust damage. EMS patch panels work well in most cases. Firewall is out, body in primer. Ch***is. small block chev. possible street blower or late model injected engine. Ford 9 in, 700R4 transmission, rack/pinon steering. Lots of work to do, color to be bright yellow, brown leather interior. Just a driver. Norman
The 2 doors were coaches Vs. Town Sedan, 4 doors were sedans Vs. Sport Sedan. By 1939, when the last few were built, production was under 100 per year.
Cool! I just had a 36 Chevy 2 door flatback given to me. Its not in the best of shape though but I,ll stash it away for the future. Any ideas on 36 production numbers?
I wish someone DID make a tailpan for the '36-37. It's a beautiful body style, and I bet LOTS of people would lose that hump on the back of their cars...
I used the 36 coup tailpan on my 36 standard. You have to work it, but it can be done. Thats not going to help with the hump tho.
Ooops, my bad! Sorry, didn't catch the "36". Anyway, same reference gives the 1936 flat back production figures as: 11,142 Standard Sedan (4-door) and approx. 76,646 Standard Coach (2-door) . The Master Deluxe Sedan was 14,536. Master Deluxe Coach was 40,814
Hello This week I replaced the LS sill plate. The floor bracing behind the sill was damaged somewhat by rust. I used part of the EMS replacement for the bracing and the complete sill plate. The plate fit ok, although the edges are somewhat rounded rather that square. Next are the rear quarter panels. Then on to repairing the rear tail pan. norman
Again At a swap meet this weekend, I found a 37 Pontiac 2 dr sedan. What a great car. I have never seen one before. It looks like a 37 ford slantback from the rear. It has a trunk, flat just like a ford. Split rear window. The rear side windows must have had a corner window, they had been removed and replaced by a long window. The dash looked like my 37 chev, the front grill , fenders , side trim on the body were totally different. A big block chev under the hood. I liked the style of the car. Norman
Ive got plans to wack the hump off my sedan. Just with i had a more door slant back to get the panel off of. guess it'll be sheet metal hammerin time!
Hello to all This week, both doors received new patch panels. They were mounted back on the body and adjusted. Some minor adjustments will have to be made for a good fit. Also, I started working on the rear qtr panels. I cut out the rusted out parts between the wheel opening and door, leaving the beads on the fender opening and sq door line intack. I have been using the EMS patch panels, I just cut out what i need. At some point I will have to address the rusted out rear tailpan. Norman
Has anyone done hidden door hinges on 37 to 39 chev's. I would like to do it to my 37 and also add bear claw door locks. Norman
My Uncle has this '39 Flatback 4 door. This one is really rare production was in the 300's. His body number is 2! These used sedan delivery fenders which have the extra filler piece where they mount to the body ( the rears happen to be NOS as well.) Neat old car..
