What the hell is going on? I talked to three different people in the last two days who own a 28 Dodge cowl and frame, 47 Chevy coupe, and 46 GMC, all in rough shape, but entirely salvageable. I've seen two of them for a couple years and finally managed to track down the owners, and it was the same story every time: "Not for Sale - It's yard art". As a classic car enthusiast I hate that fucking term. It's worse than keeping a dog outdoors on a chain all its life. Rather than give the dog to a good loving home, they'd rather just let it suffer in the cold and die. Or in this case, return to its base elements and rot right into the ground.
I know it's their perogative what they choose to do with their stuff, but damnit, it literally pains me to see these once magnificent vehicles neglected to the point of uselessness. And then what? Once it becomes an unrecognizable hunk of rusty shit, does it cease to be yard art and get hauled off or buried?
One guy runs a small "classic car" dealership. He saw my interest lay in the only car on his lot apparently NOT for sale and tried to push some ratty street rod onto me, like "why go through all the work when you can have one of these?" Another guy was just pleasant as could be til I mentioned the GMC, and practically hung up on me.
I understand that he might get inquiries about that truck on a daily basis, and sure it might annoy him, but it warms my heart to know there might be others out there who can't stand to see a beautiful machine rot in the cold and want to try to save it. Maybe if the old fart hears from enough people about literally SAVING his truck from certain demise, he'll realize he's doing the truck and the world an injustice and put it up for sale.
Can someone explain this yard art bullshit to me, or is it just another case of non-car people ruining my day?
    Rant over.

If you own something its up to you to do whatever you want to with it, even if thats nothing, no matter how many folks would like to do something with it.

On a more positive note there is till so much tin still around if you look, its not a big problem. Just keep on looking and you'll get what you need :)

I have yard art. It's not for sale. I enjoy it everyday.
I have old cars, they're not for sale, I enjoy them everday.
    Whats the difference?
With all due respect, if the owner enjoys it, thats where it ends.

I guess it is just me then. It's just aggravating to hear that term three for three in three days time. It's like the new catch phrase for old cars around here. It's either way too nice to be "Yard Art" or a completely insane price for what would probably only be good for "Yard Art".

I want to know where these tacky people live that consider a rotting cowl something they want to look at in their yard everyday.

Exactly. Who is to say they aren't car people either? Just because they enjoy their car in a different manner?

You can buy some, some you can't. Calling it "art" may very well stop the city from demanding it get hauled off also.

I took the grille off my International and leaned it up against the wall beside my house.

I can't wait til the first guy stops and asks me if it's for sale. I'm gonna tell him, "Naw, I'm gonna make a hot rod out of it":D

Lucky.... here in Tn it's yard art until you collect more then seven of them. But I agree with Gigantor if you love it so much why let it go the way of rust. Let it go to a home where it can see some of it's former glory, and be happy knowing it's on the road again...if ya want yard art buy some flamingo's

It belongs to them. Why should sell it to you if they don't want to. I have stuff that people want me to sell. Just because people want it doesn't mean it is for sale.

Just remember how annoying it gets when people ask you at every stop light if your car is for sale. I'm sure that is how the "yard art" people feel when you bug them about there stuff that doesn't have a for sale sign on it.

It is not just you gigantor. I am the same way. literally a mile from my house is a vitamin/health food/hippie factory. sitting in front of this facility for as long as I can remember is an original 30/31 A truck. A flatbed on it with a sign on the bed advertising for the place. This truck has been in great shape for a long time, and I have been watching it over the past couple of years get slowly more decomposed. Poor thing is sitting right out in the elements.
A buddy of mine went there and tried to buy it, but of course they said "nope".
to me it is just depressing.

Do you still have the Chevy cpe in your profile? If so give me your addy and I'll be by to pick it up. I saw it and want it and being as things seen should be for sale at your price. I figure it should work in reverse. I'll give you a $100 for it now and $50 more when I turn it. See ya soon.

Alas, that is not for sale, nor is it yard art, but a car that is lovingly stored indoors and slowly being put back into shape. That doesn't stop me from looking for other projects. My woman says she'd really like an old truck for herself, and if I can get her enthused about old cars, it will bring us that much closer together and she can spend time with me in the garage instead of complaing that I spend more time with my car than with her.

Here is some yard art for ya', I found this one on the internet a couple years back. I don't know where I found it...it could of been here on the HAMB. Though I would rather see something done to it, I would not mind having something like that resting in my yard.

I don't mind them not selling stuff, but I do cring when I know that it is rotting away. "Hey, let me get that up off of the ground for you, so that people can see it better!"

A lot of people have been through the same thing, it is definately frustrating. No different than junkyards that want a million bucks or else they will see it rot or crush it, just the motive. Where I live tho, there isnt yard art. Out in the sticks that stuff happens.

Hey it's no different than them not wanting to sell what's theirs. "Lovingly stored indoors" is it heated in the winter and airconditioned in the summer? If not then I think your not taking care of it right! When are some people going to realize that they can't make people sell something just because they think it's not being taken care of the right way. Grow up and get over it. Some of you guys are worse then 2 year olds seeing a toy they want and throwing a tantrum when they can't have it.

I bet you could own every one of those pieces of lawn arts! Pull out a big enough wad of dollars and I bet they would help you load them up.
Since you guys want to save this old tin, put your money (and the banks if needed) to work to save them!

I have a bunch of so called "yard art". in the form of motorcycles and old bicycles. Some bikes have baskets on them and the Misses plants flowers in the baskets. Some motorcycles are just in the garden. One very rare 1930 Schwinn/Excelsior bike has been fleck stoned and is hanging in our living room. People ask all the time, if they are for sale or why did I do that with them? I tell them because they are MINE! I purchased it to do with it what I wanted to.

How happy would you be if you spent a bunch of dough and time on a vehicle and some Joe off the street laid into you about why you painted that thing that color. That's just not right. You'd be just as mad as you are now at the guy that won't sell his stuff.

I have a bunch of restored and rodded stuff and it irritates me to no end when people keep hounding me to sell it to them. Asking once is not a problem at all. everytime I see them it is annoying. Don't do it.

    Just my oppinion, Don
