so I've had a pair of original Oldsmobile rocket valve covers for quite a while that i want to put on my small block Chevy. i painted them chery red and want to do the letters in ivory. has anyone painted raised letters fairly succesfully? if so how? roller? masked and sprayed? help me out. I've wanted to finish them for a while but have been to nervous to do so.

A foam roller should work, but have some thinner, and a pack of q-tips handy.

There is something sadly wrong about the first sentence.

You've already done the red or I'd say spray ivory, then red and block sand the letters. If you don't want to do over, then a stiff rubber roller.

Get a good 1/4" lettering brush.
    http://www.mackbrush.com/flats2.htm
Since you already have red you might need to do a coat of opaque white to cover it and then the ivory.
    Use One Shot Enamel.
If you "Shake" due to booze, coffee, or other "stimulants" high blood pressure, you might just not be able to do it at all, in which case hire a sign painter.
On raised letters I might try a flat rubber stamp.
"Paint" the stamp then stamp the raised letter evenly and in one motion.
Dont press too hard or all the paint will just goosh out the sides.

I don't have any more problem with putting Olds covers on a Chevy engine than I do with putting a '46 Olds grill on a '48 Ford.
    It's called Customizing.
After all, GM did put Chevy engines in Oldsmobiles and Buicks in the 70's...and in Caddy SUVs in the '00's.

i pinstripe so the coffee booze shaking thing isn't a problem. but they are raised letters so i figure a rubber roller would do. where can i get one?? Menard's? or is that more of a specialty thing? thanx for the help guys!

Printing Brayer, most any Community College book store that teached Art printmaking has them on the shelf right now.
Or I might go with just a linoleum block. same source.
I did hand letter my own '55 Oldsmobile Rocket covers back in the '70's, a Bombay Martini helped at the time.

Why don't you guys spend your time in a post that is more interesting to you instead of ragging on someone with a legitimate question???????

So not only are you putting olds covers on a SBC, but you're putting them on an 80's SBC?

See, I LIKE guys like you... you'll make my truck even cooler because people will think I'm running a FAUXldsmobile... until they really look and see it's a genuine 371 Golden Rocket.

No... But I am his Dad. So what? This is a cool kid with a rockabilly hairdoo, pegleg pants, some cool guitars, etc. He likes to pinstripe and he is doing what he can with what he has (Isn't that what rodding has always been about?)

So, yeah, he has an 88 Chev truck that is black with ivory and red old school striping, mexican blanket, caps and rings, dropped about 6-7 inches (no air ride) and he is scraping along as traditional as he can get with what he has. Just a cool old shop truck until he can begin another project some day.

There are some spider webs and dutch style striping under the hood and he wants to do the overdone Olds valve covers on a Chevy thing for the heck of it.

    So what???

No, we think you're a dumbass because you've proven you are.

There's nothing traditional about an 88 chevy man. hahaha Not even if you put cobwebs under the hood. (I can't believe you even admit that. hahahaha)

Also, someone implied that it's no different than a chevy grille on a ford or something... well, yes, it is. You don't put a chevy grille on a ford to make your ford look like a chevy... you put it on there because you like the look and aesthetic.

You put OLDS covers on an SBC to make it LOOK LIKE A ROCKET. I don't care where you are, who you are, or what you're into... that's retarded.

Not as retarded as this thread... but pretty retarded.

FWIW you could always buy a Hyundai and put some cobwebs on it and some flat paint... afterall, that's creative and "hot rodded" isn't it?

FWIW, I think his truck looks good, even if it's age-inappropriate.

Olds valve covers belong on Oldsmobiles, though (as I'm saying that, I'm remembering that I have a Cadillac air cleaner on the Chevy in my Ford).

This is froma board that pushes to put "tractor" grill on cars!! Give me a fuckin break!!
Go outside & check the altenators on your flatheads & see if the "AC" is working in your 30 coupe cause you live in arizona or somewhere hot & you can ride without it!!Go pick on someone with a "Harley" Tattoo that doesn't own a harley!!

I don't know why you chose to reply to me. Maybe alzheimers is setting in. I have never condoned tractor grills. I think they're pretty stupid. And I think you are confusing the HAMB and OSR, I seem to remember and awful lot of shit thrown at those tractor grills. And I do not have a Flathead, let alone a Flathead with an alternator. And I live in North Carolina and yes it's hot. But I don't have a '30 to put A/C in. But it will be in my '57 Buick at some point. As for the making fun of Harley dudes, well I do that regardless of wether they have one or not....:D:rolleyes:

  29. People do that?

A Cad aircleaner isn't a "branded" thing, it's a style thing. And it's not as if anyone would do it to pretend they have a Cad engine. Would they?

There's some funny shit in this thread!

  30. If you had 3K posts you would probably have just asked about the process and left off the Fauxsmobile part.

As for creativity, there is nothing creative about Rocket valve covers on an SBC. It's been done to the extent that they are available new.

As for your Dad's comments, if he thinks pegleg pants and a rockabilly hair style earn you credibility here, I don't believe either one of you really "get it."

In my opinion, you should absolutely build your car to reflect your style. After having done so, make sure you choose the right place to showcase it.
