  2. I use to cruise, jump, and cause mayhem on a Diamond Back Silver Streak with black Skyways. I thought I was the baddest on the block. When my son was old enough to ride a 20" I found him a 83 Mongoose Californian and got him hooked up!

My 1st bike was a Stingray that was a hand me down from my uncle. My dad rebuilt it and painted it for me when I was @ 7. I didn't really appreciate the bike at the time, cause all my friends had new Redlines or Haros whatever. Man I wish I had that bike now. Don't know whatever happened to it after I got a new Schwinn with TuffWheel 1 Mags. I still have the Schwinn though...

No prob, just a warning though.
Kids in bmx are not what you remember. Attitude, lifestyle and more has changed considerably.

The bikes will be familiar, they have gone ultra lightweight and breaking parts constantly has returned. There are some good ones still out there though.

Oh and be prepared for sticker shock, you can almost build a car for what many of these kids have in their bikes these days. $2k is not uncommon and easy to do. $1500 seems average for a lot of them, but some have been known to crest $4k.

The good news is parts selection has never been better.

I raced BMX from 79-86. Raced mostly in the EBA (Eastern Bicycle Association) in NY/CANADA. In 85 I was NY state champ for my age division. Owned a few bikes but my favorite which I still own is a JMC Derrell Young Design. All custom built with a slew of the old goodies. Ran 1 3/8's straight laced rims and also had a custom set of 1.5's straight laced as well.

Bike is hanging in my parents garage like a side of beaf. thinking of it makes me wish I was 15 again.

I raced NBL for a few year when I was younger. Had a Dyno then built a Hyper. Had a blast but the got to big. Had a 24" diamondback cruiser for awhile but was way to outta shape by then. My brother-in-law was sponsored by Desotoe Skatepark and Skateparf of tampa for awhile. Don't know how much he rides now since he broke his arm.

My step brother raced around that same time... 84-88 and was state champ in california in his age bracket. ...only difference between me and him was I was faster but his mom had the dough to take him traveling...I raced local only.

Yup, still racing, went to the BMX worlds in Canada this year, my wife got a fifth! Our team got third over all for regional standings, me and the wife are leading regional scores, I got a national 20 this year, and our team had quite a few top 20 and top 10 numbers...its still a great time to get away from the shop a little!

I have been riding mountainbike since 1991... ouch... I´m getting old! Still ride once in a while, but not as often as I would like to! I still skate sometimes, hooks up with some old friends and spend a whole day at the park. Often the result is that I am totally wasted more than three days after...

After 20 plus years of being away from BMX, I stumbled onto my old '82 GT pro frame that was stolen from me out of my parents garage. I bought it back from a seller on eBay that claimed it had a bit of a past from the guy "He" bought from at a flea market in Houston.

The story goes : it had been hanging at this flea market booth for years and the shop owner stated that he purchased the bike at a police auction in Houston back in the 80's. Shadey at best...

When I got it I recognized the fimilar etching on the bottom bracket. It was what was left of my Dad's drivers licsence number that had been partially ground off.

I will never be let it out of my site again

I raced from 79-85 and then went on to dirt and ramp. I rode several different bikes. Rebel, Hutch, GT, Torker, SE Quad, ETC. I always missed my GT pro.

Im currently on a '94 24" GT last of the American GTs.

Heres my '82 GT Santa Ana PRO.

I was into it way back when; never went any further than the street, or AJ Agajanian's track out in Gardena, CA. I rode an SE Racing PK Ripper. I sold it to a friend's little brother for something ridiculous like $50 in '86 or '87 (I think...). I really miss that bike.

Edit: I, too, have the bad back and shot knees from years of skating and riding that bike.

All three of my kids race. My daughter just pulled a #1 plate for 12 year olds here in Oregon. My boys are #10 (our 7 year old) and #4 (our four year old, who races as a five year old). Here is the little one on a pass.

They all ride thanks to West Coast Redline. I couldn't afford the constantly changing bike sizes without them!

BMX is THE MOST heathy & Positive sport any young dude or dude-et can be involved in.

How many of you HOT ROD experts took apart your bike before you wrenched on a car...?

    I STF did.

Wow.. this thread has been going for a while... This is going to date me, but who else used to look forward to the next installment of "Radical Rick"??? BMX Plus was the sh!t!! Raced ABA for a long time as a kid.. Rode for Kastan, was one of the first with the alumintanium frames. Robinson, Elf on Z rims, Powerlite, had 'em all... Then got into freestyle/street.. still remember tearing down the street on my Quadangle and my Haro Master!! Man, good old days...
