Not real trad but a pal of mine is de-tuning his blown ModelA. He wants to run Webers on a 400 Smallblock Chevy. I ran a search and couldn't find any firsthand experience or details on companies to buy from. Metalshapes?
Moon Equipment and Inglese sell the Chevy Weber manifolds, Weber carbs, and linkage. The manifolds are not all that expensive. But the carbs? Your going to have to get way up off your billfold. Despite the cost, it is hard to beat Webers for looks or performance. The Rolls Royce of carbs.
That's funny, the '07 Guzzi's have a Weber-Marelli fuel injection system. I know that these days they have been going by Magneti Marelli and have dropped Weber from their name. They still make a ton of Fuel Injection stuff but pretty much have given up on carbs... Same company though...
the website says 750 for 48 ida's. i hope thats for all 4. ida's arent that expensive. i mean, they arent cheap, but they arent that price for each. used can be had for a decent price.
http://www.rotaryracing.com/ These people bought out Freddy's a few years ago. Freddy's used to be a pretty good source for Weber systems; dunno whether they still are, but comparison shopping is always nice. I've talked to several people with Inglese systems & heard positive comments; they all said that the systems (for them) were either bolt-on-and-go, or only minor tuning was required, which was provided readily by Inglese/Total Performance. Maybe that explains the heavier price tag?? More service? Dunno.
Pierce Manifolds sold me parts and helped me with Info when I dialed in the Webers for last years Raffle Motor. They sell complete sets as well. For the street, I think I'd go for a IDF set instead of the IDA's. And I'd keep the carbs kinda small. ( 45s probably...), with smaller venturis in them as well. Unless its a set of webers on a single plane intake ( like the Raffle setup, that was basicly one big plenum ), then I'd go even smaller. I went from twin 45s to twin 36s on that one... I've heard people claim these carbs loose their settings quick, are impossible to get synchro'd right, are useless and tempremental on the street. But going by my own experience, if you set them up for the street ( meaning, not a detuned race setup...) They should give lots of trouble free miles, with very good Torque, HP, and MPG... I'll be able to tell you more once my home made Quad Weber setup hits the street. But right now I'm still building the car...
when buying any weber carb it makes a huge diffrence where it was made. any weber made in spain is a crapshoot most i have tried to use are junk any that i have used that are made in italy work great dont use a chrome weber the chrome builds up and blocks many ports.
Here's the website for Pierce http://www.hotrodwebers.com/ They've done all the crazy set-ups that show up at Billetproof on the Calaveras cars Marcy
The Tech guy from Pierce knows about the HAMB. I believe he owns or built the low Model A Sedan with the 8 Webers on it ( 4 sidedrafts and 4 Downdrafts ) Their phone# is on their Website...
if you use the smaller idf's be SURE to have multipe fuel filters on your fuel lines. they are extremely sensitive to dirt in the gas. i've used them for years, and this was something i found out early on. pulling and cleaning those idle jets sucks. ida's are expensive. even the repops. early italians are fetching up around 1200-1400 per pair, so 750 ain't so bad. i dunno if they have changed the fuel progression holes on the repops, but early ones really benefit from the modification. needle bearings on the shafts are a plus too! keep that fuel pressure at 3.5 lbs and avoid backfires, and you'll love 'em. nothing sounds like multiple webers at full throttle!!
Call Pierce and ask for Stephan. He's a buddy of mine and the main tech guru of the shop. He set me up with this for my Chevy I-6.
I ran this setup for years on a 400 small block. It worked great very responsive. I had it on top of a edelbrock performer manifold and the carbs were 48 dcoe's. I recently replaced it with a 4 barrel as one carb was playing up and needs a kit which i will do shortly. Looked great in my opinion.
Kirk beat me to it, but yeah a few of those guys work there and Stephen has the 8 Weber'd A Sedan that Metalshapes was referring to. Marcy
