How do they fit into the discussion, especially since there were plastic cars being built in the late '50s and '60s?

    Or were you joking?

It doesn't just relate to a preceived double standard RJP is referring to. I had been chided for having a electric cooling fan on my A/C dobermann condenser......hidden, no less ......berated by someone who has Centerline wheels on a "traditional" '55 Chevy hot rod. At least you can't normally see my fan.

    That's the spirit!

how often do you drive it, and do you enjoy it any less just knowing you own it?
I doubt it. I would imagine it slaps a great big silly smile on your face every time you see it, right?

    THAT'S the point.

I know a couple of guys that build primered cars and don't drive them any farther than the end of their driveway. They are the ones missing the fun just like the high dollar cars that refuse to drive their cars. Both groups are missing the fun!!

I do drive the wheels off of my cars and encourage people with high dollar cars and cheap ones to do the same. There's nothing like a road trip in a hot rod. Even if you're going no place special.

Maybe what I'm reading in the Thread's comment, is a discussion of used/driven versus fine finish/less driven? Some members are outspoken, but the board is a place where opining is expected.
I like to think that the HAMB has a range of views. And this is a sign of health...if we all start trumpeting the same "line" then our creative lifeblood will be diminished. In general we agree, that traditional
Rodding is our context, our way of continuing and creating as best we understand, the rod style(s) of years gone by. '40's are, like '50's and even '60's, unique. Identifiable. And to be appreciated as true expressions of the art.
Since we are each in our own realm re: time, money, age and skill, it is tantamount that we welcome and support each contributor to the board. My own preference is toward the user/driver, still, I find the lines of a car that is well-kept can encourage me to look at build detail w/a fresh point of view. It truly is a grand place to raise questions and debate...Thanks to Ryan, Curious & Corncob among others.

I need to build a barn to put my daily driven, beat up, used to be nice lookin, old Ford in.

However, I plan on my shoebox being as gold chain as it gets and it will live in its garage. Some things I like to keep nice and not beat the hell out of.

I'm pretty sure your not all assholes, but I feel the same damn way. I build my stuff to please myself. I've spent way to much money building a car and I've spent next to nothing to build a car, and I enjoyed the hell out of both of them.

Would I like to build something to compete in the Ridler? No because I'm not that good. Do I hate those people who do build cars for those kind of competitions...no, because they have the talent or vision or money or whatever to pursue that...good for them....it's just not me. Will I be sharing a beer with them...hell no because I can't afford to even think about what they're drinking, but I know if I run into most of the guys and gals from this board that we could hammer a few cold beers together and have a good time....and if you don't like my car, so what...It puts a smile on my face when I get in it and that's what matters the most to me.

  17. Personally, the only kind of owner that irritates me is the guy/gal who takes credit for what they DIDN'T do. If someone wants to spend $250,000 to have a car built, good on 'em. :) I'm not jealous (well, maybe a bit...I'd love to SPEND $250K on parts, anyway, but it ain't gonna happen, so why worry about it?). I can't say a $250K car would appeal to me, because I wouldn't want to drive it....& to me, that's the point in doing this in the first place...but, my junk might not appeal to that owner, either. That's OK. :)

My problem, if I had one, would be if they claimed to have done the work themselves...or done a certain portion of work...when they had not. I believe a certain individual here on the H.A.M.B. apparently did just that at a recent MI show, & got called on it in a recent thread. (Actually, ALL his posts appear to be troll-like or shit-stirring in nature.... )

The only other thing I view poorly is unsafe work....I don't feel like dying just because some a-hole can't weld or engineer properly, or is too cheap to pay for decent brake & steering gear. That gives us all a bad reputation.

BTW, Lux, I give you the award of "Post Of The Week". :D Even IF virgin boob sweat is nearly unobtainable nowadays....& only affordable by gold chainers like 3WLarry. :D

Actually, the guy who pays a shop to build a car is proud of the fact and mentions it often. At that level of money, it's a badge of honor to say Fosse milled out $40,000 rims. But what about the hot rodder who becomes wealthy and no longer has the time to build it himself like he used to. Is he any less a hot rodder? If you check the background of some of these guys, you'll find hot rodders who did it the hard way and now, because of responsibility, they can't spend the time they would like in a garage working on a car. Some of them have empires to run.

It's easy to find fault with these types when you can't relate to where they are. I dare say that if anyone on this site hit the powerball, you might TRY and stay true, but for how long? Would you roll around in primer or drop a check on a shop for a 1" thick flake job on a built Merc? Be honest. Every inch of the space under your hood would be chrome and you wouldn't clean it yourself, you'd have a guy or guys on the payroll who would do it after every cruise you went to. You can't really judge those guys until you've been in their shoes.

I'm fairly sure Vic Jr. isn't in the garage right now turning a wrench on a car.

    My .02

I think most of you, topic starter included, are putting way too much into this. If you own a car, show winner, trailer queen, POS, FagRod, grandpa's ole beater or any of the inbetweens, it's your fuckin' ride. Enjoy it the way you want to(even if it's a billet clad fagmobile). That's why most(except you hipster turd lickers) of us have this affliction with old iron. Cars are cool and each one of enjoys them in our own way.

For fuck's sake, some of you talk like this is a high school popularity contest.

You own a car(or whatever)? Enjoy it how you want and don't be apologetic about it. It's your damn ride...

Larry didn't build that car, he had it built. No discredit to Larry, he was certainly involved and made excellent decisions for the car, but he didn't build it. And while he does drive the crap out of it, he spent plenty of money on it to qualify for gold chain status.

IF I had bottomless pockets I would have each of the shops that I admire build me a car. Different shops have different strenghts and I would have the style of car that best suits that shop built there. I would then spend my time cruzn the country visiting the shops that were building my cars for me and stopping in to see car friends along the way and maybe buying a few houses in the different parts of the country that I love the most. At night I would spend my time posting that days adventure on the HAMB.:D

Ryan would also have access to a bank account that would pay for all the Jalopy Journals monthly expenses and I'd do the same for the RRT too.;)

Call me what you will but I prefer to drive then just about anything else on this planet.
