Does anybody have any pictures of some rods painted like WWII / Bomber / Olive Drab - Airbrushed Rivets, Etc ???
Backseat Betty has real rivits and airplane bits and pieces. Do a search here for the car, not the ***hole owner.
Airbrushed rivets = gay. Hahaha Our shop truck is getting painted the prettiest shade of semi gloss pre-war AAF dark green you will ever see. My buddy Gary spent weeks getting the right shade for me... cause I am one picky MF. I get chills just thinking about it. Hahaha!
Is that your car in your avitar?????? The black one with red steelies and WW's??? What's wrong with olive-drab??????
Seeing as how my chances of ever flying in or owning a WW2 aircraft of any kind are next to nothing, and I haven't perfected time travel ... yet, I think Hot Rods are one of the only mediums someone can get away with applying aircraft implements to without looking like a complete psycho or dumb***. I dig it ... when done tastefully. Riverts are cool.
I acutally like the idea of rivets. Using bits and pieces from aircraft and industrial design from different time periods is fair game. Pre war sports cars including ferraris used to use rivets at one time. And seeing how that rodders coming home from WWII were looking for that type of speed that they aquired in P-51's it starts to make more sense. God forbid that we would try to pay respect to those who came be fore us. Why doesn't every one get together and write up a guidline for the rest of us to follow so we don't feel like ***holes when we ask questions. Save the elitist comments for Ford Mustang forums. Back Seat Betty is a good example of a aircraft inspired hot rod. Chip Foose is building a P-51 inspired '32 roadster. I am actually building a '54 Chevy that takes subtle cues from a B-17 Bomber. It is a tribute to my father and I have dubbed "Sky Pilot". I guess when building something like that, it becomes very easy to over do it and make it look cheesy. And even if your weren't doing a fighter plane inspired hot rod, Olive drab just looks good no matter how you slice it.
Nope. I just like how it looks and trust me, It pulls off the red wheels & white walls better than a Malibu. I think the T is a HAMBers car. I have no idea what thread I got it from. That drab green look is fine on a period military vehicle. In my opinion, on a car it just looks waaay over the top trying to get a WWII bomber look. It just isn't right. In my world, anyway.
Yeah thats what im talkin about. My roomate is actually building a car and wants to take, basically what you have but also lightly airbrush faux rivets on the panels. Were not lookin for an all out replica plane paint job on a car, or full on tribute car, just doin the olive drab and adding some little touches
Did anyone see the 73 Camaro that the editor of Hot Rod had built? 1500+ horsepower twin turbo daily driver. Project "F-bomb". That thing is sick!
I'm all for the airplane inspired hotord, but if you're going to do it, don't pull punches. Django's right, airbrushed rivets ARE gay.
Here is a pic. Look it up it is bad ***!! There was an episode of Hot Rod tv that was all abou the build. Oh yeah and it smoked that Farrari.
i agree with the guy that said that older hot rods are the last remaining/obtainable artifact of that era... considering that most planes back then were about worthless... i LOVE the olive drab colors... no airbrushed rivets... get real ones... they even have plastic ones!
Thanks......remember.....many of the old war planes were painted "in the field" with whatever was available......the nose art on many planes were painted on quickly too, as it was wartime....and are not as refined as many of the nose art stuff guys are doing today..... While the new-style nose art looks great.....it lacks the "feel" and character of the originals........I tried to recreate that same feeling. I may redo it this winter.... As for rivets.....don't add 'em just for the sake of having them.....make them DO what they do....hold **** together...hahaha!
the bomber, aviation theme is freakin badd a**. Its about capturing the era, and the atmosphere of a day gone by. The OD green looks absolutely amazing when done correctly. . . ( as an operator of 50 year old military jets i might be biased though. . )
Here's one of the finest OD rods you'll ever see. And build by one uber great guy. All but one are B&W, but you get the idea... Vance
