I want to swap a 4.6 EFI motor into my 51 Ford tudor, anybody out there done a swap like this? I know I will have to fabricate mounts, that is where I am needing help.

Before I get set ablaze, please know that the car is being built for a customer who won't listen to me and insists on having late-model power, I just need some help getting this motor in there. The word I have found that is won't work anyway, so oh well.

I bought a Fatman frame for my '56 F100 and their mounts for my 4.6 2V were really adapter plates to the block that allowed the use of sbc stock rubber mounts. I also got motor mounts for the 4.6 4V in my '32 from Industrial Chassis in Phoenix. His mounts are really nice but you will have to fab the part for the frame that the mounts bolt to.

Isn't 4.6L just a newfangled way to say 289cid??? If that's the case, I can't see it being much of a problem getting one into a '51... unless the motor mounts on this "4.6" are drastically different than a good ol' run of the mill SBF. I could be ridiculously off base though(it's happened before... it'll happen again)!

There it is folks... way off base! I was told that 5.0L=302cid and 4.6L=289cid.... last time I bring that up!

    Thanks,

Jeff, Where thing usually get tight on a shoebox is pan and tie rod interferance. That would be the first place to look. I have two drivers with 4.6s and have had great service from them Tere are starting to be dress up items as well. Good luck with it. Just don't open the hood around here.lol

That is more or less right BUT the 4.6 shares NOTHING with the old 289 or 302. The 5.0 does atleast LOOK like a 289 size wise.

BTW I dont think there is enough room in a Mercs bay to get one in........

The motors are wide, but actually quite a bit shorter and not much taller. The single overhead cam is not as wide, but close to the dual cam version. Actually, I transplanted a 4.6 DOHC from a lincoln mark VIII to where a 302 was and the motor mounts were only an inch or so off on one side. There are easy work arounds for the computer controls and such that make it simple.

karkraft.com has everything you need to make the swap. they make adapters so you can mount any 302 manifold you want. Throw on thier ignition box and your good to go.

These motors are showing up a lot more these days.

More things are being made for the 4.6 motor. Edelbrock is making a new manifold so you can mount a 4 barrel carb and it comes with a new box so you don"t have to use the factory computer or factory wire harness.. If you use factory fuel system ther are other companys that make wire harness and new boxs of factory computer just google for info. I see somone also is making aluminum valve covers. More thing coming out all the time with more people going to be using modular motors. They are short and wide. I see no problem putting in your shoe box. I am going to put one in my 49 woodie. Just about any ford transmisson will bolt to the block.

My brother (FordFan) and I swapped a 5.0L in a '49 Ford Sedan. Seems like it would be a similar swap. Here's the link:

I'll be happy to answer any questions you have. We put in a lowering kit, sway bars, power steering, header alterations, etc. Also fabbed up a core support, made new inner fender parts, trimmed some things, etc. PM me for any and all questions.

If anyone has the drive to do the swap, I have a low mile Mark VIII, CHEAP! PM me. I wanted to do this swap, just too many irons in the fire. My other Mark VIII is no sloutch, these engines make great power and look awesome. I'd love to see what one does in a lighter car than the Lincoln.

The 4.6 is smaller in displacement (281 C.I.) than a 302 or 289. But it is W-I-D-E as hell. See attached.

I'm putting a 4.6L Cobra motor in a '50 F-1. The truck owner purchased the wiring harness from The Detail Zone. It's not cheap but looks like a quality set up.I have to change the fuel rails to make it a full flow system but nothing too hard. A Procharger is on it's way complete with an intercooler ( can't wait to plumb this beast). PAUL

    Kar Kraft's link http://www.karkraft.com/

Yes this is the same Kar Kraft that handled the Boss 429 into Mustangs in 1969 and 1970, so to me they got plentry of cred.

Wide is right, I forget where (Ford literature, or the Ford web site) regardless the people that manufacture them claim they are 3 inches wider than a 460. Where they're measuring (valve / cam covers or exhaust manifolds) I don't know.

AFAIK, that's not the case. It's a different company that happens to have a contract with Ford, and the same name.

    cheers

Here's some pictures of a 4.6L in a Mustang II. It may be of interest to you guys running Mustang II front ends. I've seen a 460 in a II before, the lack of any shock towers makes fitting these in a car so equipped a bit easier.

The 289cid actually breaks down into a 4.7L, but I do see your line of thinking. The 4.6L is a DOHC motor used in later Mustangs and F-150's to say the least. Very popular with some mustang guys who opt out for the 5.0L.

If he's concerned with late model running gear, any later injected 5.0L would be a bolt in using a kit from Opies or Speedway. Still just as reliable, if not more, easier to swap, and sets easier with the professors here on the board.
