Joe and Von Rigg Fink you are 100% Right. I myself use a super kick*** craftsman air compressor to fill up all my tires.
FWIW where I work we load all new and used cars with it at no charge to the customer. The purity is set to about 96-97%. We have found it gives the tire psi sendors a much more stable reading. That said I wouldn't use it on a hot rod unless you have sensors and if you do your shouldn't be on this board.
Pitman, any agronomist worth their salt knows the nitrogen cycle. We just have the meth heads stealing out nitrogen. I don't think you want NH3 inyour tires. ha ha ha
If you have bias ply tires, do not do this! We all know how the new Firestones can have a bounce or wobble, right? Well, we were gonna use nitrogen, but couldn't find any so subs***uted helium instead. Got the car up to about 60 MPH and the bounce started. We had about five feet of air beneath the running boards before our voices went back to normal.
I fart in my tires to inflate them, that way I get a good laugh when the guy at the tire shop dismounts them.
You are correct when you say it isnt pure oxygen which isnt what i said. most of the g***es in air we breathe is nitrogen, completely 100% non flammable. when you add a catalyst such as oxygen even 02 it becomes an accellerator not nessecarily a combustable. hence the reason when you add air to fire it gets bigger or causes explosions. the oxygen in the air is whats flammable. pure oxygen or not and oxygen molecuel is going to burn, which would be how nitrogen is sperated from its paired molecues is some cases depending on what its paired with. not to say that a gas that expands wont expand enough to blow out a tire, but nitrogen wont catch fire and blow out a fireball like air filled tires or shocks. I light everything i can get my hands on on fire, not smart i know but its fun. when you heat anything that contains oxygen and it exploded it will shoot out a fireball pure nitrogen wont.
Nitrogen in tires is not traditional, it's yuppy SUV stuff. Why is this even being discussed? I'm appalled!
Just an excuse to charge you another bit of cash. Now, how many places you think are "selling" you nitrogen, but giving you plain ol' compressed air? That's the question!
I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned that almost ALL tires used on Bonneville racers use nitrogen in them. The main reason is because with high outside temps - up to 110 deg F. - and because of the flex in the casings; the nitrogen keeps the pressures stable. (our B/STR runs 90 P.S.I. nitrogen) Using "plain old" air expands too much and can cause blow-outs. (NOT fun at over 200 M.P.H.!!)
They told me when I got new tires on my truck that it will help gas mileage. I called ******** and the guy was looked rather annoyed that his BS rating was noticablely high. Nitrogen at a shop is arount 93-95%, good old air is 78% Nitrogen. BS for my Sierra, maybe good for a streamliner.
Just think....you own a shop. $20 bucks a car/fill. 100 Customers a month. An extra $2000 a month ($24,000 a year).
Our dealership bought a get rich quick nitrogen machine....I laughed and asked who the **** would spend $50.00 to fill their tires when air was free! since nobody was buying the **** they started switching all of the new and used cars over and tacked the $50.00 onto the selling price. That way they have to come back when they get a flat they said.....I just laughed some more, shook my head and walked away....dumb****s.
I've got a couple boxes of German air left if you are interested. Bought them at a garage sale.New old stock, never used.
Also have some genuine American air from the '50s for the "traditional" crowd. Works great with bias ply tires.
is the WTF about the name becasue if it is i cant help it my mom named me susan anne good thing i was born with a big knob.
Down here in South Texas everyone runs the Mexican methane gas. It's lighter than regular air and you can tell when and where the leak is coming from. We have a consistant supply of it and the price is good as you may imagine. A special blend would consist of Dos Exiqus, Corona mixed 50/50. Now that's some good(bad) stuff. Don't tell anyone OK? In fact I feel some coming on right now!!
How about freshly pumped sunshine? That's what the tire store salesman is pumping up your back door while you are actually considering putting N2 in your tires. This discussion actually came up at work the other day. We decided it probably came from racing but thought using helium was a better gimmick. lol
