I wore that tape out when it first came out. There wasn't much any good to listen to well after it came out.

Is Ol 55 by Tom Waits a Hot Rod record? And if so, why hasn't it been mentioned? (unless I missed it) Too many are familiar with the Eagles version to likely give it much credit but............

Well my time went so quickly,
I went lickety-splickly out to my old '55
As I drove away slowly, feeling so holy,
God knows, I was feeling alive.

You know that had to be a rightous car.

Now the sun's coming up,
I'm riding with Lady Luck,
Freeway cars and trucks,
freeway cars and trucks,
freeway cars and trucks...

There should be a seperate thread for Hot rod songs that aren't so well known. We all know the Beach Boys and ZZ Top but how about something off the beaten path? Here's a little gem I found on a 45 that I picked up for my juke box. It's called "Roll Hot Rod Roll" , by Bob Spencer , have no idea on the year but it's on the Epic label
Highly recommend it.

Lots of fantastic songs already named, but here's one that I guess I'd have to say is my favorite (very hard to pick just one!). I really can't believe it hasn't been mentioned, yet. Maybe its because it seems to be more musclecar oriented, but there's been plenty of those already added to the list. Maybe its because its from Springsteen's almost forgotten solo acoustical album, "Nebraska". If you haven't heard it, you really need to!

Well, I had the carburetor, baby, cleaned and checked with her line blown out she's hummin' like a turbojet.
Propped her up in the backyard on concrete blocks for a new clutch plate and a new set of shocks.
Took her down to the carwash, check the plugs and points.
Well, I'm goin' out tonight. I'm gonna rock that joint.

Early north Jersey industrial skyline, all-set Cobra Jet creepin' through the nighttime.
Gotta find a gas station, gotta find a payphone. This turnpike sure is spooky at night when you're all alone.
Gotta hit the gas, baby. I'm running late, this New Jersey in the mornin' is like a lunar landscape.

Now, the boss don't dig me, so he put me on the nightshift.
It's an all night run to get back to where my baby lives.
In the wee wee hours your mind gets hazy radio relay towers, won't you lead me to my baby?
Underneath the overpass, trooper hits his party-light switch...
goodnight...good luck. One, two, power shift.

I met Wanda when she was employed behind the counter at Route 60 Bob's Big Boy. Fried chicken on the front seat, she's sittin' in my lap,
we're wipin' our fingers on a Texaco roadmap.
I remember Wanda up on scrap metal hill with them big brown eyes that make your heart stand still.

Well, at five a.m., oil pressure's sinkin' fast.
I make a pit stop, wipe the windshield, check the gas.
Gotta call my baby on the telephone,
let her know that her daddy's comin' on home.
Sit tight, little mama, I'm comin' 'round. I got three more hours, but I'm coverin' ground.

Your eyes get itchy in the wee wee hours, sun's just a red ball risin' over them refinery towers.
Radio's jammed up with gospel stations...lost souls callin' long distance salvation.
Hey, mister deejay, woncha hear my last prayer hey, ho, rock'n'roll, deliver me from nowhere...hey, ho, rock'n'roll, deliver me from nowhere...hey, ho, rock'n'roll, deliver me from nowhere...

9. Excellent thread. I was just thinking about asking this question this morning, when I was listening to Commander Cody's Hot Rod Lincoln. Forgot about this old thread, glad it was revived.

I'd have to say there are a few that get me going. My family has a pretty eclectic taste in music, so its pretty mixed.

Oh Yeah! by Yellow
Lowrider by War (already mentioned in this thread)

And there are a few country songs. I know, I know, they're country, but hey, listen before you hate.

Ain't Nothing Wrong with the Radio by Arron Tippin
(...She needs a carburator, a set of plug wires; she's ridin' me around, on 4 bald tires. The wipers don't work and the horn don't blow, but there ain't nothin' wrong with the radio)

I Brake for Brunettes by Rhett Akins
(I brake for brunettes, blondes in Corvettes; For redheads, I stop on a dime....)

Chrome by Trace Adkins - forgive me for posting the entire lyrics for this song below.

(Chrome -
chrome, she can see herself in the shiny grill and the
wire wheels of a red chevelle with four on the floor and the top down
chrome, zippin' by on an electra glide
with dual tail pipes doin' 105 in the broad daylight
on a two-lane headin' outta town

forget pink and purple paisleys
little mellow-yellow daisies
ain't no pot of gold in her rainbow
her favorite color is ..chrome

chrome, get her leg up high
on the bumper of my big black mack truck
with a smoke stack pointed towards the sky
and mud flaps, you know the kind
chrome,i said hey little girl you sure look nice
do you wanna ride, i won't bite, she climbs inside
says hell no, i want to drive

forget pink and purple paisleys
little mellow-yellow daisies
ain't no pot of gold in her rainbow
her favorite color is ..chrome

it's chrome alright shiny,nice polished
chrome, chrome

forget pink and purple paisleys
little mellow-yellow daisies
ain't no pot of gold in her rainbow
her favorite color is ..chrome

her favorite color is...chrome
that girl is all about chrome
she sure loves chrome

All my favorite hot rod songs are by Chuck Berry.
My favorite guitartist and song writer, period.

I also love many obscure rockabilly hot rod songs.

Didn't want to read all of the pages to find out if it's been mentioned but "Rumble" by Link Wray is the all time winner. Everything else is just a contender
