I was very impressed with this car the first time I saw Ron's photos of it. I send it to some of my custom car buddies and most of them did not car for it at all. The car does remind me of the old Ayala and Barris cars built in the early 50's and possebly redone for a new show season. A car like the Jack Stewart 1941 Ford built by Ayala and finished by Barris.
Yes its slightly overdone in a few erea's and perhaps not as flowing in some other ereas as it could be but it sure brings back a true custom car feel to me.

After I heard some "comments" on the car from my custom car buddies I decided to change a few things here and there to make it look like I would have done it... But its still all Larrys creativity and custom car design...

    And my photoshopped version.

Rikster the running boards make a world of difference IMO. I thought the same thing about the Jack Stewart Ford always thought it was a little awkward in a interesting kind of way.

At first view I quite liked it but it looks a bit "knobbly" Rik that improves things about 200% but I've still got a problem with the tail lamps.

rikster is onto something. those few things changed make it look like an old custom from the 50's.
I have seen a few other of vdlarrys cars, for the most part he has real neat ideas, I wish I could build and finish cars as fast as he does.

Yeah, I would have gotten rid of the old guy standing in front of it too! I really love your eye for customs.

I'm looking at the bottoms of the doors and hating them. The rest of the car is all curves... the squared-off door corners really throw me.

    Like this...

Well I like it. I agree some sort of runningboards are an improvement.
Obviously the 3 foot dust collector it won means a few other folks liked it as well.

    Congrats.

You really need to see a car like this in person to judge it.
I have seen a few in mags that looked great and in person they were a mud wagon.
I havent seen this car so I cant say.

I does look better photo shopped with running boards and raised up.

Here are a few more I took, I don't think any of the pics really do the car justice. Personally, I liked the car at first glance, and every time I looked it over again I found more I liked about it. Larry was nice enough to tell us about a lot of the modifications to the car.

By the way, the hubcaps on the front are stationary when the car is moving.

I have to go along with Rikster. It has that slightly OTT late '50s "little mag" look - a bit of everything style of customising. Apart from the dodgy hubcaps and mural on the trunk lid it seems to have that period look. I certainly prefer this to previous cars of his that I have seen featured.

The more I look the more I like. At first glance its kinda overwhelming but the little details are just awesome. I dig Ricksters spin on Larrys design and its more to my liking but Larry stuck to the rules and built what he wanted not what others thought he should. Killer ride and congrats to Larry. He earned it and its well deserved................

I love sectioned kustoms and this one is driving me nuts. Larry tries to do
something different every year and I love to see what comes out of his sick mind. Copying someone else is easy. Trying something new is brave and Larry has pulled it off again.

Kongrats Larry!! Hopefully see it in person someday.

    Happy Trails,

    Mick

I talked to Larry about. He told me the complete build was 13 months, chopped the top in one week, channeled, sectioned it (first true section job), crafted the rear fenders by hand over his knee and not on an english wheel, widened the front fenders by about 2 feet total, and about a 2 inch strip of the hood is original the rest is fabricated. He had guys interested in buying it by the first day. The rep from Ol Skool and CK talked like it would be shot for the mag when the interior and and engine is finished.

The car came to the Ducktail with 35 miles and was the cars first show and test session. It is a true running Kustom that he drove a ton that weekend. Neatly painted "Winfield fade" and the color was loosely picked after the "Jade Idol" hence the name "VooDoo Idol"

I have a few pics on my site under Kustom of The Month and Larry Grobe's work, but they are not as nice of photos of it as Ron has. You really have to see it.

I wasn't asking the question, Knucklehead.

It looks like an awful lot of effort went into the car-but I think "less" would have been more-Those taillights-they break up the roofline/decklid/rear fender transition.

Rear windows look "off " somehow...The Spots are just out of place (always thought they look better on slab sided cars than fat fendered cars...) I dig the rear bumper cut in...nice!
The front bumper...looks like a last minute choice...like it was placed there, instead of intended to be there.
The grille, however has some very nice touches.
Running boards would look killer (as per photoshop)-but can you imagine stepping out over them to get into and out of the car when it was aired out? I can see why they were omitted. problem is, they left the front fenders all lonely out there by themselves. The thingies on the skirts take away from the reveal at the bottom-which was enough all by themselves.

I like the chop-ALOT. this is weird for me, because I don't typically like the radical chop approach.
The only sore subject on the chop is where did the window chrome go?

    Hubcaps...yeah....not my thing.

over all, it's a ton of effort, and in my opinion, the nicest damn thing Larry has ever built. (I'm sure he's a nice fella and all, and I'm sure we could play a game of checkers without killing one another, but I have HATED most everything else he has built...but what do I know? I'm a ****in' Muscle car guy.) So Kudo's for the trophy, Mains.

    What I meant is this.
I did not immediately recognize this car as a Ford. the roof looks remarkably like Speedaddicts Chevy. the grille, bumpers, and other mods took the iden***y off the car (and that's not a bad thing) and what it is NOW is a Custom. We all know there's not a whole hell of alot of Ford there. If someone hadn't spelled it out for me, I STILL wouldn't know what it is.

To set things straight Carls brother bought a body, and quit his job that was going no where, and also had another child to go along with the beautiful daughter he already had. Carl out of being a great brother and friend paid to have the machine work done on Jerome's engine.....and yes the engines he builds are built up and not just runners that he places into cars. In the mean time Jerome has had not 1 but 2 everyday cars stollen, along with half of the Hallock windshield that belongs on the forementioned roadster in the trunk of the second car. While this was taking place Carl dissmantled his roadster and sold off parts to fund his Coupe Project, which he has started about 1 month ago. It would have been started sooner but he removed his thumb right above the nuckle in an unfortanite grinding wheel incident. Carl has been very busy in the past year or so helping fix some major problems on couple of cars that were supposed to be done already. And in his spare time he with the help of a couple of friends built a *****en 27 T roadster, hand fabricated rear belly pan and all. I know its easy to throw stones, But you might want to get your facts straight. Todd I do believe your Hmmmm comment was a jack*** remark. while you at the pile up park your Model A next to Larrys creation, than you have the right to make a comment like that.
    Everyone have a great day!

Looks like a question...has all the proper words for a question...the only thing it doesn't have is a question mark...so, time for an English lesson...

You wrote : "YOU mean what was that."

"What" means (according to Webster's): used as an interrogative expressing an inquiry about the iden***y of an object.

    "Was" means simply: past

"It" means: used as a subject or direct object, usually in reference to a lifeless thing .

    Lux Blue...looks like you've asked a question...

Yes, according to Webster's...it is a question no matter how much you protest...and you did ask it in regards to the question asked by Evel: "What is that?"

And then, LUXBLUE, since you were put in your place...YOU resort to childish name-calling...

I won't...but then again, I still don't understand why anyone would ask a stupid question like that in the first place. I have not gotten a satisfactory answer...and you certainly didn't answer it either...I stand by my original question: "Why do people ask such a stupid question?"

    I like the car.

I think that the proportions are a little exaggerated, but that's larry's style. Right, wrong or indifferent, the car looks to be finished off really well... there's alot of work in that car, and I tip my hat to larry for that.

I think it's his best one yet.
