Some have a screw buried inside the chuck,a few screw on,
I think most have an internal taper.

You MIGHT find, there is no separate arbor,
since there was no slot for a drift.

The taper could be machined onto the end of the spindle.

Just got back in from getting the spindle out and that is what I found. So much for my drill press being the same as the manual I have. Luckily I was able to make a tool to get the bearing retainer and spindle out without destroying anything. Pretty proud of myself about that.
Tommorow I will figure out exactly what the taper is on the spindle/arbor so I can exchange the chuck. The Jacobs chuck I ordered sure was a nice one, hopefully I can get the same model again.
Wish there was a way to adapt to the seperate arbor but I guess I will have to live with what I have.

81, you might be able to use that Jabobs chuck. I can't see what chuck you bought, but you need to figure out what the taper is. THEN order a taper that fits into the top of the chuck AND the spindle. What chuck did you buy, from where so we can look it up in the catelog? Maybe we can help you pick it out. Most 1/2 inch chucks have a 33 taper, maybe a #2 Morse to the spindle.

I had purchased a 3JT chuck and a arbor that the manual I have indicated. My manual doesn't match my drill press in this area. The spindle/arbor of my drill press are one peice, with a 33JT as I have learned looking at the McMaster-Carr web site. The 3JT chuck I purchased was a Jacobs Ball Bearing 14N. Enco doesn't show a Jacobs Ball Bearing chuck for the 33JT, thought they have other chucks for the 33JT.

Joey, Is the taper on the spindle still in good shape? If it is take some measurements, small end diameter, large end diameter and length of the taper. From this you can determine what the taper is. Have you tried to the new chuck on the taper and how does it fit. If you call the tech department at one of the catalog stores, MSC, Enco or other with the measurement they may be able to tell you the taper and what chucks they have available for that taper. A machinery handbook would have the taper information.

I would not try to take the stub shaft with the taper out of the spindle shaft. The stub shaft was probably press in, pinned and then the taper ground so that everything would be concentric.

The taper has a ding at its end now, my fault, I droped it about 6". I should be able to file it back to round I would think. I want to check the spindle again for straightness since it is out.
I was cruising around the web and found a couple of blurbs about bushings to adapt one Jacobs Taper arbor to another Jacobs Taper in the Chuck. I haven't found anywhere to purchase such an animal.

Anyone know where I can get a 33JT (my arbor/spindle) to 3JT (my new chuck) bushing (or adapter)?

I have never heard of a bushing to adapt from a 33 JT to a 3 JT taper. When you clean up the taper only clean the little burr, try not to remove any material from the good part of the taper and you will probably be okay.

    Update:
Got the new Jacobs 33JT collared chuck installed and got the spindle/quil/etc. put back in the drill press (after giving everything a fresh coat of paint). Looks like the new chuck improved things considerably, my runout is now approximately .003 just below the chuck (was .007). I was really hoping for a little better. So, is .003 good? What would you expect from a $500 Craftsman drill press?

Yeah, three thou is about all I'd expect from a drill press (or any drill chuck really).

If you keep your bits sharp, you'll not notice that three thou at all.

When In doubt throw it out! if a chuck is running out it often is the chuck its self and if you like quality work it is a small price to pay.
BTW I heard that this really coll guy was selling a BIG drill press ont he classified boards.it has no visible run out.
