This year Hershey was all about good luck..

a 40 ford woodie is at the top of my "most wanted" cars..

last week I overcame another hurdle in owning one..

this wood is actually a "take off" by a restoration shop in new england..its not "good enough" for a 100 point car..

however, i think it will be perfect for my project because I want to build something that I will not be afraid to use..

I missed the opportunity to buy this stuff in august.. but last Wednesday morning at Hershey I managed to make it happen.

not sure if I have stopped smiling since..

this joma mirror thermometer came in one of the boxes of "small parts".. and apparently had been installed on the car at some point in its past.

    front door..

    rear doors.

and if thats not enough.. on my second day at hershey (in the pouring down rain) I found this spare tire carrier with the all important O1A part number.

its shape indicated that it was for a woodie.. and it fit perfectly..

better yet.. it was ONLY $5.00

    the tire holder installed.

this "score" wouldnt have been so big..

if I hadnt found a rear door latch from JR.. and...

If this wasnt waiting for me at home..

lots of work still needs to be done..

lots of little difficult to find parts are missing, but thats all the fun

    Wish me luck

IF anyone has 40 woodie stuff.. please pm me!

    thanks sawzall

As I mentioned before.. you had some good karma.. congrats on the find.. can not believe you found the wood, then to find the spare tire bracket... did you buy a lottery ticket right afterwards..

What does the door say, it must be from a lodge?

    boones,

someone certainly knows something about this car..

the striping will likely stay.. as will all the other defects..

ken your right.. I should have bought a ticket..

Very nice Sawzall! Your find is similar to a friend of mine who scored all the wood for a '49 Ford due to a restoration. It had just the right amount of "weathering".

if you can contain yourself, you really just need to install "as-is" and leave the wood and finish original.. now if the body only had some orignal patina.. (maybe you need to shoot the care with single stage (like black) and leave it (so the paint is not real deep) and looks like old laquer..

I actually think your odds of winning the lottery would be better than ever finding something like this again. Seriously, I know three people here in Indianapolis that have each won at least a million dollars in various lotteries. You are the ONLY person I know to find something like this. Pretty incredible. Can't wait to see it all together.

You gotta' love the 100 point resto guys that discard this kind of stuff because it is not good enough for them.

I am sure that everyone here would rather have that than new wood. We will come slap you if you take off the lettering :)

There was a HAMB thread in the last 4-6 months about a bunch of old cars found & bought in New Hampshire?? found by a hamber from Mass? There was a 40 woodie that rotted away but all the hardware was there. I have no clue how to search for that thread.

    thanks..

  19. I personally don't care what you paid for it as it sure seems like you're very pleased with it. I know I'd be pissin' my Depends with a score like that. Good to see it fall into such loving hands.

I've been Jonesin' for a woody since forever and the '40 Ford is one of my top picks too. Wise call keeping the striping and defects as they are. I love the little character traits that cars pick up over the years and it looks like these panels have had the right balance of experience and care over time.

Great score and keep us posted with progress pix. BTW, I love Washington Blue for a color but any color looks good on a woody.

    sawzall,

Great find and one can tell by your determined attitude, you'll not only finish the woody, but it'll be one cool ride. Love your '40 Phaeton the stance is so cool. Post pic's as you can with the process on your woody. Very cool................

    CRUISER

That's pretty cool that it worked out. That wood could've been long gone since your chance in August. Must've been meant to be.

Alot of those old woodies were converted from the factory right here in Waterloo, NY by the Hercules Campbell Body Company. There's a pretty interesting read by one of our now deceased residents who managed the plant here for years. I can't rember the website but you'll find it witha search

Sawzall, great score...it was your turn, man!! good karma helps too..

it happens to me all the time, here in mexico i live many of these moments in the recent years....

btw, days ago i've been out in the province (jalisco region) to check out some cars....

it appears after talkin with some locals friends there is a collector with has 20/30 cars ,mostly 4 doors but in werehouse is sitting a 40 ford woodie...sitting for many years.no idea bout the actual conds

now,the owner is super rich and wont sell anything,as far i know...

but at the end of this month i'm going back for the Panamericana race in this town and a friend is trying to get the doors open just for us in this place...cross my fingers!!

just to look around,in case will take pix of the cars, and post em...

if this helps somehow or you need to have pictured some special parts, let me know...glad to help, sled

As you'll see from my avatar I'm especially happy for you. Mine features original wood and I won't change it. The new wood, polyurethane decopage look is fine but not for me and apparently you.

  28. This is the reason swap meets still rule over egay. NOTHING can match walking up to the parts or piece you have searched for for an eternity. The rush you feel is indescribable and makes life worthwhile! Congrats on your finds of the century, and happy hunting for the stuff you still need!:D

  29. Gotta love people with more money than brains, thats what makes this kind of score possible. 100 point restorations are nice and all, but how can you have anything cooler than the real, original, 70 year old wood? That's like trading in real tits for implants the same size.

    Congrats Jeff..
Can't wait to see this go together..
A 40 Woodie is, to me, the holy grail of Woodies....
    Once again, congrats man..
