Saw a pic somewhere of a chopped, channeled fat fendered Ford touring or 4door convertible sedan in a used car lot. Was this common in the late 40's early fifty's? I know there are several chopped and channeled 40 coupes around and I really like the look. Cole's incredible 36 has me wanting to go this route. Any pictures?
BTTT.. wasn't there a 36 sedan sans roof, lowered alot, maybe not painted showing up in some event pics from last year??
Possibly-I think the pic was in TRJ. the car appeared to be in the second row! Not even top billing at the used car lot! Show us those pics if you can. Grumpy, I know the car you refer too. This pic was definetly oldler than that
There were two rod & custom used car lots in SoCal in the late '50's. One was Kustom City on Santa Monica, and I think the other was Andrews & Evans on Van Nuys Blvd. There was an early Barris Kustom built from a '41-'48 Ford Tudor that was chopped, channeled and sectioned, had the top cut off and replaced with a Carson top, fadeaway front fenders, skirts, and a '47 Olds grille. I think this is the car you mentioned, and there is an old picture of one of the car lots with this car in view. There was a thread on the HAMB a couple of years ago which included this picture. I recall that AV8 was a participant in the thread, and he may have posted the picture. If you liked that car, I imagine you'd also like the '40 Merc two-door tub that was built by somebody here on the HAMB a couple of years ago. Made from a four door sedan, it was better proportioned than the Barris car. Here's a picture of that Merc.
50- that's Brewsir's car which I think he sold last year. Cool car! I have a 38 deluxe front end and a 38 pickup cab with the roof cut off. i want to build either a tub or roadster. The doors and quarters I will shape on my ewheel and helve hammer. I want it to look like someone channeled and chopped a tub/ roadster just after WW2. They used what parts they had on hand. You won't see the modern drivetrain and bag suspension. I sure wish I could recall were I saw that pic!
This might be a pictures of one of the used custom car Hot Rod lots. This is a picture of an ad in one of the early 50's custom car magazines. The Barris car you are discribing most likely is the Sam Barris built and designed for Joe Urritta, '41 Ford. But I think I also saw a photo once of this Johnny Zaro '41 Ford for sale on a used Custom Car lot... somewhere. I will look for it this weekend, see if I can find it. Both are wonderfull samples of late 40's early 50's custom cars based on the early 40's cars.
Ill be honest with you, its 1 am, im tired and i just came in from the garage, im just looking at this post for the pictures. haha. and i saw Rikster posted a pic of this car. a guy around here owns it so heres more pics of it. Nick
Hi Nick, Thank you so much for posting these recent photo's of the Zarro Ford. These are the first photo's I have seen on the net showing it in its current (perfect) condition.
Hey no problem dude. They are actually larger and i have a couple more pics if you want me to send them to you. I didnt have my good camera to take the pics so they didnt turn out as good as id like them to. The car is so awesome. I looked at it pretty much the entire day. Its like the only day of the year the guy brings it out. Nick
Rikster, you win the grand prize. Your pictures of the Andrews & Evans lot and the Urritta Ford are exactly what I was referring to. I imagined that the Urritta car was the one that hammeredabone was looking for. There is another picture floating around of the Kustom City lot, and the Urritta Ford is in that picture.
Here is the picture of the Zaro Ford in the D&B Auto Sales lot. The photo comes from the Barris book and according to that the custom only was 24 hours on this lot before it was stolen. This pictures was taken by somebody who was looking for a different car and just took this snapshot since he liked the custom. And this is the complete Andrews & Evans Custom Cars and Hot Rods ad as it appeared in 53 Hop Up magazines (and others).

The Andrews and Evans ad shows the 1947 Merc Zarro , belong to a guy in St louis metro east area, he's had since 53 was rolled then restored some years later.
Here is how it looks today... First photo it sits next to the Johnny Zaro 1940 Merc that Sam Barris built and that has been completely restored by Kurt McCormick. The Plymouth bumpers are an update the current owner made.
Ok, I think there is some confusion, possibly on my part. The car above I believe belongs to Russ Erlinger since '51 and was built by Zaro. It was rolled soon after he got it and was restored with different grille. Notice the Illinois plates. Kurt McKormick I believe has the more famous Zaro Merc that you see in mags from time to time. He lives in Missouri and I think the front end is more like the older design. Can anyone back up my claims?
