ok i picked up a set of window cranks and regulators for my 52 F1 from fellow HAMBER nate, great guy to deal with. they have some rust on them but do work fairly smoothly. only one regulator seems like its skipping a tooth once in a while. my questions are:
1)-should i get these blasted, powdercoated? or would wirewheel, primer, rattlecan work well enough?

2)- do these use some type of lubricant? like around the gears.

My glass man told me to put some grease in the spring, roll it all the way up then down, that way it will slide better when you roll the window up.

I also have a 52 F1. I just cleaned mine up and shot with black. Save the money that you would spend on the powdercoating on something that will be seen.

My high tech pro shop that did the awesome work on my 52's chassis etc used a real old school method for the regulators

Just left em in an old bathtub full of "molasses'...I dont know....its somehow related to keeping horses???????

but they came out like brand new after about 6 weeks:D

the real thread topic should be how to repair the always rounded square hole for the door handle shaft so the outer handle will stay horizontal and line up with the hood trim........anyone???????

one old bloke told me to add material to the shaft and enlarge the hole......anyone got something easier???????

I definitately wouldn't blast them as you'll want all those contact surfaces as smooth as possible...

I've always cleaned them with solvent and a stiff brush in a clean drain-pan. Blow them out with compressed air if you've got it, then lube everything that moves with white lithium.

I did the regulators in my '55 F100 like this 12 years ago (along with a number of cars since then) and they still work very nicely...

thanks for the tip tinman. on one regulator, when i crank it, it seems like its "skipping" a tooth. it makes a clicking sound. any ideas on what that might be?

The molasses is just used as a rust remover (environmentally freindly too) If you do a search you should see several threads about using molasses to clean the rust off steel parts

  9. That molasses just hoses off, don't it?

A lubrication tip; motorcycle chain lube! It gets in tight places and sets up and stays put, and you can put other greases or oils on top of it. Great stuff!

thanks for the help everyone. i just went back and looked at the regulators. they arent as bad as i had thought, most of what i thought was rust was actually old "grime" i just wire brushed off. most of the paint is intact except a few bare metal spots. i was going to just use primer over the bare spots to keep further rust at bay. it will prob look like crap but its not a piece that will be out in the open.
