After looking at the many pics from all the shows etc over the last year I noticed the " trend " of putting company names on the doors ( Mostly trucks but cars too ). LIke Joe's Speed Shop ,Ya know then somebody Fades themout to look old. Is this the new " red " wheels. I know it's been done in the past but it seems like it's all over now...Thoughts lads ?
I don't know what you mean by "Cookie Cutter" because I am all about the newest cutting edge trends, with that I am going to put another glob of grease on my pomp, and go out to the shop and pop in a Stray Cats CD while I work on my flat black "Rudy" styled truck with wide white walls, red steelies, airbags, tractor grille and a small block Chevy with Olds "rocket" valve covers.
Drive Em, You really said it all...perfect! When I grew up in So Cal in the 50's I never had a clue so many people would fuck up the way we actually looked or the Music as it wasn't. Thanks, Ron BTW, and the Cars
Don't put a shop name on the car unless you have a shop. If it comes on the truck when you get it, paint over it, don't tape it off. If you want to keep it, take a picture.
Imaginary Shop Names on doors, poorly done fake "patina",wide white walls on EVERYTHING.The new flat black and red wheels. Next will be 4 door "Gassers".
Yep....we're screwed. "Rat Rods" are the new trendy shit....Move over OCC. Every redneck and backyard mechanin wanna-be is building a "rat rod" now. Its gonna get WAY worse before it gets better. The way i look at it is....the more stupid shit people build, the better it makes me feel about my own car...plus, just think of all the half ass build project cars that are gonna be for sale dirt cheap in 5 years when it dies out.
Hate it. Hate it. Hate it. Thought it was cool the first time I saw it on a weathered pickup. Gagged the first time I saw it on a car. I'm guessing that's what defines a fad (seems like a great idea until you see it done more than once). On the other hand, what's it take to sand down and re-primer a door when you get tired of it?
Blah.... EVERYTHING has been done in the past... thats why we're building these cars in the first place, because we LIKE what has been done in the past. I'm 28, and i can't wait to rehash old ideas, and maybe improve on them if at all possible... some of you guys got things pretty darn right.... why change them? (And yea, sometimes this means painting your wheels red, and painting signs on doors ) And who really gives a rats ass if i decide to make up some fake name and paint it on my door? (although since i DO own my own shop, i think i will be painting my own logo on my own door But really... have some fun man, thats all they are trying to do by painting their doors... if somoene wants to build something that looks period correct, or have some old "patina" look to it, and it involves an old sign, then by all means, why can't they do it? You get to paint your car whatever color YOU choose, you get to run whatever wheels YOU choose... Everyone mods their car in their own tastes, but still in an effort to be "cool"... if one person goes out of their way to do something new, and others think it is cool enough to emulate on thier own cars, then why shouldn't they? And why be afraid of new blood coming in and building trick cars? If it takes a "Rat Rod" revolution to get people interested in old tin and custom cars, then i think thats perfectly fine... sooner or later they'll find salvation... hahaha! If you go out of your way to bitch about it and find new ways to complain, then all you're going to do is give yourself a headache... ENJOY IT! ENJOY LIFE! Have FUN with it! Let people build what they want to build... Sure, speak up and complain if you see something downright unsafe. If some kid comes in and is using their IMAGINATION and trying something new, then don't bitch when YOU don't like it cause it isn't exaclty what you'd build.... last i checked, YOU are not building it..... and at the same time, if someone comes in with no imagination, and copies something cause he likes the look, then DONT BITCH just because you don't want to see some young gun come in and build something that looks like something you like... At least they are wanting to build something cool either way, and either way you lose, cause they are building what they want and they are happy about it.... you're the only ones getting upset about it. So don't worry...... be HAPPY! Hahaha!
You can say what you like but I am NOT going to sand the original propane company paint work off the doors of my '51 1/2 ton GMC Propane company pickup. The old faded red paint still looks good to me as do the 1950 era "one shot" painted on the doors logos. So there, Take that.
its your money your time your busted knuckles(hey that would be a good shop name to put on a truck door, ha) do what ever the hell you want.
Actually, I kinda like the door signs when they are on trucks. Hell, I even think the "Rat Rods" are cool. What I hate (and I will probably get ripped a new one here) is when people put modern rims and rubber band tires on old cars. Especially if the rims are LARGE. I hate when someone has a 50's car or Muscle car and they donk it out with large rims that are designed by Chip Foose or something. I myself like the 15" look like Cragars, Radirs, Slotted Aluminum, Keystones etc.......And instead of seeing Chevelles and Camaros all over, I dig when someone takes an old car that was not concidered muscle or the norm for hot rods and makes them look bitchin. I saw a 72 LTD the other day, total 70's look, Cragars, jacked up in the back etc....and it was cool as hell.
Fleabiscuit about sums up life, don't live it for someone else it's yours. Everyone has to make their own happiness!!
EXACTLY! Thank you! Class is infinite, trends last the summer until winter comes and the real guys start on their projects full out! If you build a classy ride, it would have been classy in the 50's and 60's and will be classy when the new is all flying.
If you are worried about fake logos on doors oyu are behind the curve.........................Yosemite Sam "BACK OFF" mudflaps are already the next cool thing.
I was 17 in 1972 and we laughed our asses off at anybody that even drove a '72 LTD much less jacked it up and put wheels on it. Or in my case scrunched way down in the seat so nobody you knew saw you driving Mom's '72 Galaxie 4 Dr..........
They have a write up in OSR about how to make new stickers with that old patina. What kinda truck was that? 70's chevy pickup. Now the door says "Hickman auto shop" My opinion: I have a '37 Chevy pickup that was an old wrecker. The old shop logo and # are barely ledgable. The phone # is like 4 digits long. I think REdoing something like that would be neat.... but I am an idiot....
My truck came with a name on it... I was planning on taking it off, and painting the truck a color with flames or scallops. Everyone keeps telling me to leave it on.
I would leave it on until you decide to finish/ paint the truck. real patina is cool, but nothing is more silly than making a $*****k rod look like an old junky vehicle.
There sure are a lot of uptight snobs in this hobby. I'd like to keep up with the Joneses ---------- if I could just identify the real Joneses, do the real ones paint there wheels red, green, or black? It's all so confusing I lose sleep at night worrying that something I do to one of my cars might offend one of you, then I smile, relax and think about how nice it would be if it did. When I was young, hot rods were cool because they went against the grain of all the uptight squares out there, I always liked that, and still do, makes me feel a little like a rebel, ya know? Shiny paint, scallops, flames, panels, stripes etc. are all a matter of taste and choice, so if a guy likes the looks of a sign on his door, then that's his business, Trends come and go, but I've noticed over the years that they never totally go away, like them or not, that's the way it is, if you like what you're doing, what difference does it make what someone else does?
I agree. When I was 17 I felt the same way. Now after going to a million car shows and seeing Chevelles and Camaros out the ass and a million Boyd Coddington Street Rods, I applaude the guy for doing something different. I dug it.
i like the sign on the door ..but,i'm a painter .. except for race cars ..cars look really dumb with car shop names on the side . the parts truck/pushertruck had the name on the side .. any who ..
