I just finished my first rod. Does anyone have some advise on how to keep from getting tickets...open headers, windshield too small, to low....

Best way is not to attract negative attention. Open exhaust, burnouts, etc......Most cops can appreciate a vintage car. And even if you do get stopped, don't lie, make excuses and be respectful. Maybe he just wanted to see your rod up close.

I can tell you from LOTS of experience that you get out of tickets by going to court with a good argument (and argument does not mean excuse). What that is depends on the cir***stances. *****ing at the cop who's writing you up is not gonna work. I know it sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised how many people do it.

Every jurisdiction has it's own rules. G***ersGarage is absolutely right though. Not being a douche goes a long way. The 5-0s will generally give you a little leeway in an old car, but abuse the privilege and they will ruin your day quick. A decent looking, well built car is a must. Even a cop whos not a car guy can spot a clapped out piece of ****. Do I mean a street rod? of course not. But even my mother knows that the transmission shouldn't be inside the car. Driving with open headers is usually fine, but be respectful. Full throttle pulls down a residential street at 3 am will likely ruffle feathers. Don't be an ***hole and you should have no problems

A girl I went to school with always told me that wearing a short skirt and crying would get her out of any ticket. But that's ********, because when I tried it I went to jail.

How you drive and use your rod have alot of bearing on whether you get the attention of tickets.

Most cops are trained observers, so you have already attracted our attention by driving something out of the ordinary. If you aren't doing something stupid right in front of us, usually no problem. If your vehicle doesn't appear to be an accident looking for a place to happen, again usually no problem. Police officers usually have a split-second to decide if a certain situation is going to kill them. If you can avoid raising any alarms for that length of time, you'll be fine. Oh...if I do happen to pull you over, don't be a ****. I can do more damage to your day than you can do to mine.

The best way to avoid tickets or get out of tickets is to really know the law that might be applied to your ride or operation of it. Once you know the law, you know how to work around it/with it.

I'll never plead guilty again and pay the ticket ,with what I know now.

Ask for an informal hearing with the local prosecutor. Show up in a suit&tie, tell them what a great driving record you have (And want to keep it), tell your side of the story briefly, and then ask for a plea bargain.(The police officer will not be present)

If you're straight with them, and there is room to give you a break, they can and will bargain down on a points infraction. My last one was a diputed "running a red light" ticket. Two points went to no points with a phony charge of record as "speeding on freeway, less than 10 mph over posted speed".

Oh yea, there's no way to get out of a fine. Mine was $150. The MAN has to always get the MONEY ! :(

My son is a cop in Phoenix, so be respectful. He helped me build my first rod, so talk up your rod, that might help.

The cops are local. 80% of the fine goes to the state, which doesn't pay the cops salary. 10% goes to the county, 6% goes to the city and 4% goes to the agency. Doesn't sound like a very big incentive for the cop.

    In California, there's also a penalty ***essment of $17.50 for every $10 of fine. For example, if you run a stop sign, it's $50. Multiply 5 X $17.50 = $87.50 + the $50 fine = $137.50

All the penalty ***essment goes to the state. Not the local jurisdiction.

  22. Just remember to say "listen ***hole, I pay your wages," and work the phrase "badge boy" into the conversation. Regardless of gender, referring to the officer as "*****" always shows some cl***, too.

Seriously, if you decided to chop and lower a car beyond all sanity, and run open pipes, you've got to understand you will get some attention. Some of it from cops. No sense *****ing about it. Like other guys said, you've done something right there that'll attract attention.

I only got pulled over once in one of my Benzes; I'd forgot to get tabs. I didn't even get a ticket for not having proof of my insurance policy. I used to roll stops and blast around corners all the time in my '49 Plymouth. Never met a cop in several years driving that car.

On the other hand, I got pulled over all the time in our Geo Storm (looked like the loser in a figure 8 race, but that little SOB gave us our house downpayment!); I think it was because it looked like a rolling meth lab. All above boards, all legal - just ugly.

If you're under 30, you might think about putting some baffles in those pipes, and make damn sure you've got legal tires, tags, and insurance. I've found that being in your twenties, cops were a lot harder on me.

I got pulled over by a motorcycle cop in a jacked up 56' Chevy wagon, 394" Olds with a Hydrostick. Car had primer spots all over, loud pipes and American 5 spokes. Year was 70'. I got out of the car, took off my "shades" and waited for the cop to approach. He took one look at me (I was on my way home from college, clean-cut, non-hippie) and said, "Sorry, I made a mistake". Then he drove off.

If you get a ticket for anything, don't admit guilt in any cir***stance. If you have to go to court plead not guilty. Ask for a discovery hearing to learn what the procecution intends to use at trial....Then when you get a court date, ask for a continuance, (because your going out of town or something) sometimes the Municipal Court gets tired of dealing with you and will plea it down or tell you to forget about it. If you go to trial, again plea not guilty and put on your best case.....If you are found guilty, inform the judge you intend to file and appeal.....they will tell you what you what paper has to be filed ......the appeals are heard by the county court, who will most probably dismiss the case. (they have more important things to do) It has worked everytime I've done it.

When you get pulled over, throw the door open, jump out, start screaming at the cop and take three or four really quick steps toward his car. Reach behind you and grab your wallet while you're doing it.
He'll shoot you, but you won't get a ticket.

Or, just don't do anything stupid like burn-outs, 20mph over the limit, rolling through stop signs, hitting the speed limit 3 seconds after the light goes green, etc.

Then why do they have to keep "stats" and keep their numbers up by writing a certain amount of tickets each month????

The wife and I were headed back from the river, taking a pretty desolate route through the desert. We regularly use this 55 mph 2 lane route and have only seen the po-po on it once before. I had it about 85 (slower than normal... it's the middle of nowhere for God's sake), came over a rise, and who do I see coming toward me? Yup. I tell the wife he's going to flip around and light me up, and sure enough, he does. He comes up to the car and asks for l&r, and asks if I know how fast I was going. I learned a LONG time ago to NEVER admit to anything, but don't be a **** either. I say, "well, it wasn't 55!" with a little chuckle, and he gets a smile on his face. He says he was surprised I knew the speed limit out there, asks if I have any priors, failure to appears, etc. I say no, and he goes to run my license. After a few minutes, he walks back up on the p***enger side and says "Oh, BTW, you were doing over 85". Great, this one's going to be expensive. He proceeds to say he doesn't expect anyone to do 55 out there, but keep it under 80, and thanks for being honest. Kicks me loose with a "have a nice day".
I thanked him, took off, and set the cruise on 79. Feels good to dodge a bullet for once.

My cop buddies have always told me the more you talk (when they've got ya on the side of the road), the more they write. Being respecful & honest, is always the best approach.
If it's unjustified, let the court decide it.
