redneck implys that its a stupid and terrible idea when in all actuality its not. a manual trans is not different than a engine its all metal parts whatever works works. oil dissapates heat better than tranny fluid, it works amazing. theres nothin in there that you can hurt by using motor oil. makes the shifting harder but people who use it bang gears hard usually.

You guys know that gear oil and motor oil don't use the same API viscosity ratings right? 80/90 weight gear oil is about the same viscosity as a 40wt engine oil. It just has EP additives.

    Same here...and a tranny!!!

I've used pepper to stop a radiator leak too, But for weeks after every time the truck got hot it smelled like pepper so bad it made my eyes water.... Maybe I used to much:D

A guy here at work had a gas station attendant put gas in his diesel truck. Said it wrecked the engine.

Anybody even put ATF or Marvel Mystery no nore than a quart) in their crankcase and run it that way for a week prior to an oil change?

  8. No...you run it for only about 10-15 minutes. Its very high detergency will break up all the sludge in the engine like an engine flush. ATF is "poor mans engine flush'.

Yes, but I change the filter shortly after I put it in (then change it again with the oil).

  10. Put a little brake fluid into the vacuum port on a vacuum wiper motor and let it sit after moving the motor through its full motion range. Most (not all) of them have leather seals and the fluid softens the leather and makes the motor work better.

  11. dudes! i work on food processing equipment and i laugh when the application requires" food grade hydraulic fluid" no such animal exists they subtitute mineral oil. i took apart a gearbox and discovered all the 90 weight had leaked out and was being lubed by the product juice from cooked onions! i used water in a powerglide trans to get home one night, trans never made another trip except in reverse around the yard.

Food Grade hydraulic fluid uses plant based oils.

Ive done the old "quart of trans fluid in the oil for a few minutes" on my buddies cars every-time they did an oil change. Wethere it actually cleans out the mill or not, i dont know. but it didnt do any harm:D .

Also ive dribbled water down the carb (advise from an old mechanic) to clean out the carbon. I guess its supposed to be like a blown head gasket, when the water gets into the top of the piston, its always clean. But those "ol school" remedies always make me nervous.

I've also done the 'ol "spray bottle of water down the carb" trick. It really does steam it out pretty good. It's not Sea Foam by any means, though. :)

Anybody got a home made Sea Foam alternative?

That may be true, but gear lube seems to shut up noisy machinery better than straight 40W oil. Been there, done both.

Back on the original topic, best top-end cleaner I ever found was a huge section of flooded road that hydrolocked my high-mile SBC slowly from WOT. After draining about 4 gallons out of the the cylinders and crankcase, that thing ran better than it ever had! Quit smoking, revved clean, you'd have thought it was rebuilt.
