.......then why do people build Ford trucks only to install a $hevy engine in them. I will never understand this.

Seriously I built a guy a rear end for a nice '57 Ford pickup. When I went to deliver it, he has a small block Chevy sitting in the bay, I wanted to vomit. He said something about the availability of parts and the cost.......

In general I agree with you, but not 100%. Hot rodding is about doing stuff differently and trying new things. If that is what he wants to do with his truck, let'm. It is a pretty lame reason because of reliabilty and parts, but whatever. Maybe he just is very familiar with Chevy engines and knows how to build the crap out of it or something - maybe just had a free engine.... Honestly, there are just as many Fords laying around wasting away as there are Chevys, so no big harm I don't think. I agree though, it isn't that imaginative and sort of weak in concept.

Just how old are you talking about? I've got my '63 Chevy swb, and play with it a bunch. 350 SBC, 5 speed, ran it at the HAMB drags this year, drove it there and back home. And I reckon it qualifys as old, hell, it's 44!

You must be a young guy.
In the beginning, (Model T era) Ford made cars that were the best looking, best price, durable, easily repaired and powerful.
Ford cars continued being some of the best looking, cheapest, most durable and with the flathead V8, very powerful cars commonly available.
When Chevy came out with the smallblock in 1955, its overhead valve design made more power than the flathead V8
It also bolted into the more desirable Fords with very little effort.
Ford owners were accustomed to having the fastest cars, so they began using the SBC
Over the years, Chevy made more than 90 million smallblock chevy engines so they are common and inexpensive.

If you have lots of money to throw around, by all means use any other engine

Mainly because most of the early ford motors are boat anchors at best....example....y block 292 vs fuelie 283.....history is fact, not popular opinion...except if you are a congressman or senator.

Nope, not a young guy, been building cars for 25 years. You can put a small block Ford in a vehicle just as cheap as a small block Chevy, it's just a cop out because people have no imagination.

Price it out- it DOES cost twice as much to rebuild a Ford engine than a Chevy- and I can pick up free running small-blocks nearly every day of the week- try that with a Ford. I was once given a CHERRY '69 Cougar with a scattered engine- I couldn't afford the rebuild or find a good running 351 cheap and passed it on.

5.0 engines are a dime a dozen in boneyards, and the blocks have so much nickel in them that a de-glazing and a set of rings will get you in running order. The parts do not cost twice as much. Around here there are no Chevy small blocks for free because people know that they are in demand. They have also have been scrapped, used in circle track cars or went somewhere else, so people have resorted to buying crate motors. There went the cheaper argument.

the 265 chevy in 55 change hot rodding forever. face it.i was attending races at olympic , riverside, lakeside and knoxville and in no time if you did not have a chevy you were not winning just that simple.not to mention what was going on at the drags.still tonight at manazinta in phoenix the imca mods champiship race will be dominated by chevys.flatheads were the engine of choice in the 30,s-40,s now its chevys, some day it may be toyota or honda. ford in a ford, mopar in a mopar, thats a restorer mentalty not hot rodding.my 60 dodge has a 406 chevy i tell people im running a 383 to get a rise out of the mopar guys its just having a little fun isnt that why we do this.

Maybe they just like the chevy engines, big deal.. Personally I do too. Lots of aftermarket stuff available, lots of "used" aftermarket stuff available, and easy to work with....Get over it !!!!!

Did you ever stop to think that it's not the same everywhere in the US? Perhaps it's different in Texas, but in the South sbc's are a dime a dozen, cheap, and usually in great shape. Can't say the same for ford products.

I like them too, just not in Fords. I have a store room full of all sorts of cool Chevy small block and big blocks-327's 350's and 400's, 396's an 454's, steel cranks, 4 bolt blocks and more fuelie heads that I will ever be able to use. I have nothing against the engine at all.

I assume you'll be wanting my shipping address then, right? All that iron that's totally useless to you and what not. . . . . . .

You have all that iron laying around, but won't use it because it's not the same make as the chassis you're building, and everyone else has no imagination?
