About five minutes ago I was working on the A tacking some braces to the body to square it up. Metal springs out of place, hand slips, I poke red hot live MIG wire right through my glove and about half an inch into the end of my index finger - pretty much bullseyed my fingerprint. I could actually feel the end of the wire being quenched inside my finger. Yanked it out and now I'm sitting here leaking fluid as I type... going back out to finish now.

My weird welding injuries always include hot wire or rod.LOL
But I don't recall ever shoving any through my hide.
The welding thing I hate the most and prolly have happen the most is with my tig. It isn't really an injury but,I don't manage rod well with gloves and when I'm welding aluminum it seems like I always get zapped at least once.
Sends a shiver up my spine just thinkin' about it.

a guy i know was holding a piece of steel tube down while another guy tacked it together...well the way he was holding it down was by pretty much by straddling it...long story short the arc jumped and went thru his pants and you know what else LOL, walked with a limp for quite some time

You're a trooper for being able to type all that....

  10. Ouch . . . makes me shiver just to think about it. I don't have a mig -- recently invested in a TIG ( relatively new at it ). I must say, I love the tig - was much easier to use than I feared. (Guess I read too many internet horror stories). Maybe it was because I've done quite a bit of gas welding - so it wasn't a foreign process (except the amperage pedal).

Most of my welding drama was with a glob of something hot landing somewhere on my body . . . in my boot, inside my glove, you name it. Or - have you ever been doing a bunch of stick/arc welding, about done with a rod . . . snap the holder to put a new one in, drop the old/hot one on the floor and it bounces and lands someplace you don't like . . . then you dance like you have bees in your shorts!

As my old welding buddy used to say - "by the time you get all the gear shut down and can look at the problem . . . it has usually stopped burning . . . might as well just keep welding!".

  11. How much fluid are you leaking? You would think that hot wire would have cauterized the wound. You may have actually burnt yourself so that the wound can't close. Watch out for infection and sepsis. I hate fingertip injuries.

My injuries are usually flash burns and slag getting down my collar.

I had something similar to that two weeks ago. I was welding an exhaust tube and put the MIG gun down to turn an unruley tube. When I reach back for my gun, I forgot that I had taken one step forward and ended up stabbing myself in the back of my left forearm with the still red hot wire and hot shield. Adding insult to injury, when I bumped the gun, I hit it hard enough to push it against something that caused the trigger to be depressed when the wire hit my arm. I ended up getting a small jolt along with the burn. It was a pretty good jolt too. I remember my arm shaking as I stood there helpless for s second or so.

The mark is still a healing scab.

Man I know that hurts. I had my own truck repair shop in the 80s, I was laying on my side and was welding the engine cross member backup into the frame of a GMC Astro 95 semi tractor when a some welding slag passed my helment and went down into my ear and burned a hole in the ear drum, lost 65% of the hearing in it.

I had a buddy who was welding up short with a stick welder, had the rod out of back of the stinger several inches. he grabbed the ground clampto move it with his left, went to raise his hemet with his right, stinger in hand also. as he pushed up the helmet, the end hanging out of the back of the stinger went straight up his nostril, good thing he's a big guy, knocked him down for a while though and his nose swelled up horribly.

Yep, that hurts. I have done that. Get back out there and keep welding.

  21. have you ever been burning or welding and got a hot spark in your ear? you can hear your ear wax sizzle!!

  22. Using a cutting torch overhead....looking up when slag fell into my nostril, bounced around until it burnt its way down my throat.Funny series of events but hurt like hell for a day or two.

Knew a guy who used to hold the tweeko gun by his ear to listen to make sure gas was on. You guessed it, he now wears a ear ring there. Guess the wire could have went in his tiny brain instead of his ear and killed him!

Yep, welding burns suck! I was welding the belly pan on a dozer, and had a big chunk of slag roll down my coveralls, and settle next to "the boys". Quarters were too tight to wiggle much, just kept welding and took care of it later. Heck of a burn though! Never stabbed myself with a mig yet (knock on wood).

a couple months ago i kept getting a pain in my knee when i would kneel on it.
a little scb was there so i dug it open and squeezed it a bunch of puss and a piece of mig wire about 3/4" long came out.
have no idea how it got there. it fealt better after that.
but no i havent ever run a hot wire into my finger. watch out for infection!

first let me say i have been having allergy/sinus problems. Last week i was arc gouging on a track hoe, i looked away and opened my mouth to breathe, sucked in a hot piece of slag and sizzled a dime size hole on the side of my tongue. i have been talking like an old rounder for a week.
