I want to get my 51 Chevy a little lower in the front and I was thinking about getting a set of uprigths from a 53-54 Chevy. I have seen a few different posting about this swap and some say they will lower the car 3/4 of an inch and another said 1 1/2 inches. Has anyone done this? How much lower did you get? Do you also need the change the steering arms to the 53-54 parts? Thanks
53-54 uprights will give you 3/4 -1", where as the drop uprights for a 53-54 on a 51 will give you almost 3" Rule of thumb. The upright is a separate piece on the older cars, spindles are 1 piece units (axle stub, steering arm, upright) on cars with ball joints. You also get to upgrade the brakes to a better drum style (bendix> huck) Get the whole assembly. I read somewhere you can use later drums and get roller wheel bearings to replace the ball bearing hubs, but I've never done it.
If you were a bit closer to where I am at I would give my whole front suspension just to get it out of my way.
Thanks for the info guys I was just looking at some of the junk in my garage. Does any one know if the uprights off a '39 would fit on my '51 Chev? They look like they should lower it between 3/4 and 1 inch. I looked and the part number for the king pins is the same, I'm just don't know if the geometry is different some how. Any Ideas? Rustypipes, I sent you a PM about your parts.
I can't stop laughing, I tried several searches looking for this post. then after 65 pages I find it's by "Kan't Spell" and he has it uprigths. I just wanted to read the part about brakes and bearings. I just picked up a pair of uprights (torched A-arms) complete with drums. my 54 GMC with 50 passenger car front suspension dropped my truck 7 inches and I wanted 8 so it's perfect for my application. my 56 Olds I changed the Ball bearing for Roller bearings. does any one have an inter change for the Chevy? Kan't Spell you're OK
www.chevsofthe40s.com has the roller wheel bearings. that's the best I can do.. I have no part numbers since I got roller bearings by going to disc brakes on my car...
