That would be the art of Erwin Wurm, he has a whole series of "fat cars" and a few other interesting automotive related pieces..

Proof that '39 and '40 Fords should be left alone.

'39 and '40 Mercury coupes on the other hand...

  15. No way! While over the top, that last thing I'd call El Matador is an ugly-ass custom.

  17. Am I the only one who finds the '49 Fleetline in the Jan 08 Rod & Custom to have the ugliest grille treatment I've ever seen? There's a reason Buick used a chrome top piece and rounded the sides down on that grille, it looks like crap in the painted surround and with the sides squared off.

More amusingly, according to the article they paid $3000 for a car with a cracked block and apparently in not much better shape body wise than mine is - and I paid a hell of a lot less for one with a good 235 in it.

  18. It isn't a great sin but yeah, it looks a little bit like one of those women with too much collagen in her lips and Botox around the eyes.

Gentlemen, for good or bad, you can take your automotive styling cues from what women are wearing and or doing to themselves. The reverse is also true. As an example I give you "The Late Great Jayne Mansfield vs. Cadillac"

If you don't think that custom cars are secret gardens of a mans or woman's inner desires or a direct route from the unconscious mind you just aren't paying attention.
How about all those grill teeth? Vagina Dentata?

    Perhaps, Sir, perhaps.

Our time is up for today, that will be 5 Cents please.

Wow, I can't believe the "El Matador" ended up in this thread. It almost seems sacrilegious.

  23. Easyrods.com makes kits to convert 1989 - 1997 Thunder Birds and Cougars to shoeboxes. Their ad is on page 103 of the latest Rod and Custom. I don't know which is worse.

I have always had a secret love affair with El Matador. I saw her on a trailer on Spring street in Paso 4 or 5 years ago. She confirmed it. I dig her. She might not be to your taste, but she makes my mouth water.

  25. Some of those cars are either a love it or a hate it deal. I actually like the green and white car, have seen it in person - it's a '58 Pontiac. It's pretty straightforward 1963-64 customizing, the asymetrical scoops and skinny whites date it about there, and there is a '60 Pontiac (maybe called the Adonis?) that the Alexander Brothers did a fairly similar head and tail light treatment on a little before that. One thing's for sure, there's a lot of work in the quarters on it.. looks like maybe they cut the coves out and swapped them side for side, so they bow out instead of in.

The El Matador doesn't really belong here, but again that's a love it or hate it car I think. That sixties era gave you a lot of cars that look like they might have flown in from outer space, and a lot of cars that looked like they were changed just for the sake of changing something. But I've always liked really radical cars if they were well thought out and the design flowed well.

The Ford with the Lincoln nose looks like the results of a pile of parts and a few cases of beer - more beer than parts. It has all the flowing design of a pile of rubble.

That 58 pontiac (green&white) was on the cover of carcraft in 64. It was gold. the funky rear window came later because he got rear-ended, and had to rebuild the car.
to some I could understand that it is ulgy, but it and the elmatador are some of my favorites.
I think that the 58 pontiac is still a one owner car. he has had it all these years.
