I just saw pics of the 'travolta fever 1971 pontiac firebird'

John Travolta Saturday Night Fever Barris Celebrity Car

    Man... that thing is... comical.

Have any of you seen it?

yep, that's the one. The bad part is this guy is advertising it as a 71 and supposedly customized in the late 70's. I fyou had a 71 why the hell would you change it to look like that anyway???

i'd rather have built only one bad ass car with an eye towards style than whore myself out building hundreds of pieces of shit. not to mention claiming pieces of shit others have built as my own.

And if Revell came to anyone of you and said hey build this car, and we will pay you lots of money you would say no because its not a cool car? I doubt it, he is a business man and has to pay the bills! I agree its really ugly but it was the 70's and 80's and thats what was paying the bills, hell the Hirohata sold for $550.00 bucks on a used car lot in the 60's!

Sorry some of you are not old enough to know that just because some of the '60s & '70s creations have not weathered the change in taste as well as the early creations- the weirdo cars and disco machines WERE NOT as ugly in their day as you make it now.
They were not built for the pure beauty of the Hirohata and Ala Kart- but as promotional devices to get people to car shows and sell model kits. To that end they were HUGELY successful. In its day (actually 1979, NOT 1971) that Trans Am was not an ugly car. As a kid of that era I know how spectacular the Smokey & the Bandit movies were and what an effect they had on a 12 year old like me. I wanted one BADDDDD. Model kits and remote controlled cars were the closest we could get.

I'm not sure a kit of this would have had the same effect ;) Well, it was the '70s so ...
(really don't mean to bust ANYONE'S chops- just see George Barris as one of my greatest idols the way a sports fan sees Michael Jordan or some other sports god)

    Well said!!!

  19. its not george its the car its all that could be done...

  20. What I find funny is that the same people that bash Barris are the same ones that give Roth a ton of respect-as if Roth didn't build some cars that were way out there. I respect all the builders that were the pioneers-Roth, Barris, Dutch, Winfield, Hines, and many many more. I don't LOVE all the cars that they have built, but they were the originals, and they all deserve mad respect.

  21. george learned kustom body work from harry westergaurd, then, he taught his brother how to do it. it's fucking sad that we have to get on here once a month and defend george barris. on the HAMB, of all places.

I don't go to church, but if I have to believe in something- I believe George Barris gave a great many of us a distinct focus in life. When I got the "Cars of the Stars" book in like 1974 I was 7 years old, already a die hard car freak- but had NEVER seen a "kustom". In that book that I was drawn to because of the "silly" '70s cars I saw my first glimpses of what would become one of my life's greatest passion- ORIGINAL KUSTOMS. The cars from "High School Confidential" were in that book and my life was forever changed. Not many whitewall "kustoms" to be found in current media of that era- but by the time I was a freshman in high school I had collected most of the early mags back to 1948 going to swap meets with my dad. At the time (1980) it made me a weirdo, but later I would find that all that time with moldy magazines was really worth something. Thank you George Barris- and all your '70s cars too!

  29. I rest my case.

What does a 71' anything have to do with spreading the gospel of "traditional" hot rodding?
