Funnycar65 originally posted the first picture and here are a couple more to go with it. This car was originally Roger Lindamoods "Color me Gone" factory A/FX car and then it was sold to Mr Norm. When they got the car they installed the blown Hemi engine from the Maroon colored A990 A/FX car. Later they put the car up for sale when they built the 67 Charger Funny Car and it actually sat on the used car lot at Grand Spaulding Dodge for awhile. A guy named Chris Farley from Mississippi bought it and raced it for awhile and that is the version you see in these pictures as he raced it at Phoenix City, Alabama drag strip. Evidently Mr Farley was not able to come through with payment and it was repoed and returned to Mr Norm. By that time they had the 67 Funny Car already and so they repainted the 65 car Red and Silver to match the 67 and the two cars toured together for awhile.
Damn guys !! FXers are so COOL !! lets keep this thread going!! It was red blooded All American Hot Rodders that made this the best times in drag racing .............BAR NONE .............. GOD I LOVE THIS COUNTRY !!!!
Actually these are early photos before they dropped the blown motor in.And Jim O'Connors name is on the doors.
If you look close at the shot of him racing I believe Hubert Platt the car still has the K frame and torsion bar suspention.Dyer stuck a A-100 I beam under it when the stuck the blown motor in.
I would also like to point out the early version has all the windows still in it.And the sedan window frames,as it came from Lindamood. The photos straight axle posted are from the Mr.Norms site were it's stated those photos are from the day they picked the car up from Lindamood. All later versions of the car had no windows or window frames.
Funnycar65, I stand corrected. I did not notice the k frame front suspension. Does it say Jim O'Conner or Ron O"Donnell? Ronny O'Donnell drove the first Mr Norm A/FX once in awhile when Dyer couldn't. I have talked to Dyer and he has told me that they never ran the blue car with injectors. He said they dropped a straight axle under it and installed a Blower the first thing after they got the car. This info along with the fact that Farley lived in the area where these pictures were taken is what made me believe it was the time frame when Farley owned it. It does make sence that a k frame and glass would not have been installed after the fact. There must have been a time lapse somewhere in there! Sorry for the misinformation on that!
It has O'connor on the Door I also have video footage from the same race as these pictures.I believe the track was Pocono Drag Lodge. Now you want to get confusing, look at the front suspention in these 2 shots? And the fact that the fronts are both moved forward. Also the door in the wrecked version also reads Jim O'Conner.
Thats the Maroon A990 car. It was totalled at, I believe US 131 in Martin,Michigan. I believe it was Rich Mouldry ( the guy who wrecked the Butch Leal car while street racing it) that crashed it. That sure looks like Mouldry standing behind the door. This crash happened after they already got the Color Me Gone car. As for the axle they did move the front axle forward on the A990 car toward the end of its career. I have a good picture of it with the front axle moved forward that I will find an scan in.
Jesus H Christ .. I am humbled .. I thought I knew Mopar race history Either you guys are just tosing shit out there , or ..You have taken a college course on this No shit, this is all facts ?
BigDad.......Speaking for my self and to the best of my knowledge,Yes it is fact. I have talked to Gary Dyer a few times and I know Mr Norm and talk to him often. This stuff happened 40 years ago and there are probably a few miner details that are fuzzy but these guys are still sharp and they have seen alot. And I love Drag Race history!
My buddies '68 Charger was brought out of San Fransisco a few years back. It had hideous pysadelic paint on it and was called "the Mind Bender". It was a fiberglass flip top FULL SIZE Charger. It was a serious hack job, yep, he cust it into little pieces. I got the rear (Olds) and coil sprung straight axle from it. Body was sold elsewhere. Funny story; we were trying to take some of the pieces of it to a scrap yard...the interior tin was radioactive! Nice! They probably originally swiped it from some aerospace or Navy yard out on the left coast. I could send that Chevy cat a pic or two of it to post if y'all are interested.
Funnycar 65, I noticed when the A990 car was wrecked it had injectors. It looks like what they probably did was swap engine with the Color Me Gone car when they started running it. Alot of shit happened in a hurry in just a few years back then.
I know there are a few guys that think they may have had 2 Sedans, but I agree with you.Just so they could keep up with Match Race bookings they were doing some crazy parts swapping to keep both cars going.
Gary, send them my way I'll stick them on here for you.Do you want me to post the rest of the Storm King photos you sent also?
straightaxle65,what has me wondering is,they ran the blown sedan with a A-100 axle in the stock location, them moved it forward. But whats up with the Torsion Bar front in the altered location and the cars have different size Rams on the doors. The the wrecked shot has the straight axle again? Why would they swap back and forth between the 2 front ends?
